Adolph Ludwig Svoboda...November 13, 1924 - March 12, 2014
Adolph Ludwig Svoboda, 89, of Smithville, died Wednesday, March 12, 2014.
He was born to Frank and Mary Barina Svoboda, November 13, 1924, in Bastrop County near Barton's Creek. Adolph and his siblings worked on the family farm. As fate would have it, he attended a SPJST meeting at the Kovar Hall and he met Elsie Pauline Sulak. They were married in 1944 and enjoyed 65 years of marriage. In 1956 their family was complete when they adopted their daughter Elizabeth Marie.
Adolph was in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. He served his country during World War II on the battleship USS Sevier in the Pacific Ocean. After being Honorably Discharged from the Navy, Adolph and Elsie made their home in Smithville. He was employed as a car mechanic and ultimately worked to become the shop foreman at Campbell-Battle Ford Motor Company in Smithville. In 1979, based on his excellent customer service and knowledge, was offered a job at the Lower Colorado River Authority's newly built Fayette Power Project in La Grange, Texas. There, Adolph not only maintained all the vehicles at the power plant, but he also worked many hours on the units during power plant outages. He retired from the LCRA in 1989.
Adolph worked very hard throughout the years but his real love was the land he and Elsie were able to purchase south of Smithville and the animals he raised and cared for. He enjoyed his time at the farm raising cattle, building barns, running tractors, cutting hay, and occasionally taking time to fish. Later in life, he found his real passion, taking care of and significantly increasing the deer population in Bastrop County. It started when he began caring and nursing back to health orphaned fawns that people brought him. The deer he raised never had it so good, being hand fed apples, sweet potatoes and tic-tacs. Up until the age of 89, he was still able to enjoy the farm and animals he loved so much.
Adolph was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and the KJT.
Adolph is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth, and her husband, Mike; grandson Derek and wife Stacy; grandson Jeffrey and wife Allison; grandson Cameron; great grandsons, Stone and Brodie; brother-in-law, August Trojanowsky; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by parents, Frank and Mary Barina Svoboda; his wife Elsie; sisters Mary Zapalac and Katie Pesl; brothers Charlie, Joe, Frank, Willie, and Louis.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 16, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Marrs-Jones Funeral Home at 104 Olive St. in Smithville. Recitation of the Rosary will begin at 7:00 p.m., led by Deacon Bernard Meuth and the Smithville Knights of Columbus. The Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, March 17, at St. Paul Catholic Church, 204 Mills St. in Smithville, celebrated by Fr. Pius T. Mathew. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Hwy. 95 South, in Smithville.
Pallbearers are Derek Kahanek, Jeff Kahanek, Cameron Kahanek, David Trojanowsky, Alan Pryor, and Victor Schatt.
