500 Year Old Groundnut Fair In Bengaluru | Kadalekai Parishe | Basavangudi | Bangalore | Food Lovers
#Bangalore #India #GroundnutFestival
Held annually on the last Monday of Karthika Masa, (an auspicious month in the Hindu calendar dedicated to Lord Shiva) the Kadalekai Parishe is a tribute to Lord Basava. Farmers from across Karnataka and states of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh offer their annual harvest of groundnuts at the Bull Temple in Basavanagudi.
Mounds of peanuts adorn the lanes of this neighbourhood for two days, as multitudes of locals purchase peanuts - raw, dried, boiled, roasted, salted, spiced, fried and sugar coated - at bargains.
A range of snacks such as bajji, bonda, batthaas, bendu and coloured sodas are also on sale, alongside stalls selling bangles, traditional toys and clay trinkets and plastic and glass dolls.

Basavanagudi Bangalore | Ancient Hindu Temples
Basavanagudi is one of the oldest areas in Bangalore. It is one area that has remained unaffected by all the IT boom in the city, which has drastically altered the Bangalore map. This video takes you on a tour of the religious side of Basavanagudi.
Dodda Basavana Gudi or The Bull Temple of Bangalore
Dodda Basavana Gudi (the Bull Temple) is situated in the N.R. Colony, Basavanagudi, area of South Bangalore, part of the largest city of the Indian state of Karnataka. The Hindu temple is inside the a park called Bugle Rock.
The bull referred to is a sacred Hindu demi-god, known as Nandi; Nandi is a close devotee and attendant of Shiva. Dodda Basavana Gudi is said to be the biggest temple to Nandi in the world. The stone cult image of Nandi is continually covered with new layers of butter, benne in the local language of Kannada. There is a cult image of the elephant-headed Hindu deity son of shiva Ganesha close by.
Every year on the last Monday and Tuesday of the Hindu month of Karthika Maasa a groundnut fair is held in the temple premises and groundnut is offered to the deity. This fair is known as 'Kadalekaayi Parishe' in local tongue. Groundnut sellers and devotees throng the place during Kadalekaayi Parishe.
Basavana Gudi is a regular place of visit for tourists and is covered by most of the tour operators including the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation.
Nandi Temple is exclusively for the worship of the sacred bull (Basava in Kannada) in Hinduism, known as Nandi, Lord Shiva's vahana, . The word nandi means joyful in Sanskrit.
The temple was built in 1537 by a local ruler under the Vijayanagara empire in the Vijayanagara architectural style. The ruler, a feudatory chief named Kempe Gowda, also founded the city of Bangalore. The temple is named after the large granite Nandi monolith placed on a plinth in the temple shrine (garbhagriha) which has become blackened from years of being rubbed with charcoal and oil. The temple is a small one, consisting only of the shrine fronted by a porch in the Vijayanagara style. The current tower (vimana) over the shrine was constructed in the early 20th century and is adorned with Saivite figures and motifs.
It is said to house one of the largest Nandi murthis in the world. The height of the murthi is approximately 15 ft (4.6 m) and it is approximately 20 feet (6.1 m) long.

GLORIOUS Southern INDIAN Breakfast at Vidyarthi Bhavan + Flower Market Tour | Bengaluru, India
Of all the places I’ve visited in the last decade or so, India is one of the most incredible. It’s difficult to find words that truly express just how much I love this country, its people, and its food. This place is absolutely magical, and I urge everyone to come here at least once in their lifetime. This video is from my second trip to India in November of 2018, which I got to experience with my buddy Sam from Sam & Audrey.

After whirlwind stops in the cities of Pune, Hyderabad, and Amritsar, our adventures through India continued in Bengaluru, formerly known as Bangalore! After landing in the city well after midnight and only nabbing a few hours of sleep, Sam and I were back at it with a magnificent southern Indian breakfast at a 75-year-old local restaurant and a tour of a local flower market with our new friend Anashwara! Come along with us as we begin our exploration of Bengaluru!
My Film Making Kit ►
We began our day by meeting up with Anashwara and heading over to Vidyarthi Bhavan, an amazing restaurant that has been in business since 1943. We had a one-hour wait until we could get inside, so Anashwara gave us a quick tour of a colorful local market that puts out fresh flowers, fruits, and vegetables early in the morning and is particularly active during the festive season.
As we explored the market, Anashwara explained that a lot of the flowers come from the outskirts of Bengaluru and that many people here use flowers for worship. She also told me about a custom where white, red, and green garlands of flowers are put around one another during marriages. I watched a woman making one of these garlands and estimated that it must take her about an hour to complete one.
After 40 minutes of exploring the market, we returned to the restaurant and we went inside, hungry after our trip around the market. The waiters here carry huge stacks of plated dosas, balanced on their arm, around the restaurant and pass them out. It’s amazing to see!
We ordered some large puris, a potato curry, idli, vada, and more. I couldn’t wait to dig in! The puri with the potato curry was amazing with the spices and peppers and wasn’t spicy at all. Next, I tried the coconut chutney, which I loved because it was spicy and gave a nice contrast to the rather bland flavor of the puri, followed by the idli with some sambar and coconut chutney. It was an incredible flavor combination, with the light, tomato flavor from the sambar and the spice and sweetness from the coconut chutney!
Up next, I tried the vada, which was soaking in a plate of sambar. I dipped it in a bit more and wow! The vada soaked up the sambar like a sponge! It was like a tomato doughnut. Then I tried the vada with the coconut chutney and reached new levels of flavor heaven! It was unreal! Next, we went with two dishes I hadn’t had yet, kara bath, a savory and spicy rava (or semolina) dish, and kesari bath, which is a sweet rava dish. The kara bath was almost like a polenta, and the kesari bath was super sweet. The two are eaten together to balance each other out.
Finally, I tried the main star of the breakfast: the dosa! It was thick and covered in ghee, a clarified butter used in Indian cuisine. Inside was a traditional potato filling. The combination of the dosa, ghee, coconut chutney, and sambar was a massive flavor and texture explosion in my mouth! It was flaky and crispy on the outside and soft and spongy on the inside. This was one of my favorite dosas I’ve ever had!
Next we tried a filtered Karnataka coffee that becomes frothy when you pour it back and forth from your cup to the little bowl that comes with it. It was fantastic and reminded me of a Cuban coffee called Cortadito.
When you come to Bengaluru, you have to check out Vidyarthi Bhavani! The food here is out of this world. Just get here early! It opens at 6:30 a.m.
I hope you enjoyed joining us for one of my favorite Indian breakfasts ever and our flower market tour! If you did, please give this video a thumbs up and leave me a comment below! And please subscribe to my channel to get all the new videos when they drop!

BANGALORE Food Tour - GHEE Roast DOSA, DAIRY MILK Sandwich | Karnataka Food Tour
Bangalore has some of the most delicious food to offer and we found ourselves right in the middle of this food hub. Most of the dishes that we tried were breakfast meals.
At Sidappa we discovered some of the softest with sagu, Chitranna and half dosa. This place surely felt like a canteen, but the food was nothing like the normal canteens we are used to. The food here is made with utmost care and it is absolutely worth it.
Our journey took us to some of the most popular joints in Bangalore serving scrumptious idlis and super crispy masala dosa. We got to taste the famous masala dosa at Vidhyarthi Bhawan. This place is known for making thick, soft yet crispy Dosas for almost 75 years! We also tried Puliyogare at the the Puliyogare point, along with some super rich and sweet pongal.
A trip to the south is never complete without a hot cup of filter coffee and Brahmin's Coffee Point serves some of the strongest coffee we have ever tasted. Our day was made even more special at Meghana Foods where we tried delicious Andhra style Biryani.
We also tried a unique sandwich which is made from milk chocolate and cheese. An entire bar of chocolate is put between to slices of along with cheese and grilled. We have never tasted something so tasty. The combination of the chocolate and cheese is a must try!
Our journey ended with feasting like a King at MTR. The thali served here is good enough to keep you satisfied for the entire day. From Dosa, Puri and vada to different types of rice dishes, vegetables and dals and of course three kinds of desserts. It is the meal of a lifetime.

Bengaluru: 50 pigeons die of suspected poisoning in Basavanagudi
In a shocking incident, over 50 pigeons were found dead near the Doddaganapati temple in Basavanagudi of South Bengaluru on Friday morning. Local residents and wildlife volunteers suspect that the birds died due to poisoning though authorities are yet to ascertain the same. Wildlife volunteer Sharath Babu said those who feed birds should ensure vessels are cleaned regularly and hygiene is maintained. “Otherwise, the same could also end up poisoning the grains leading to the death of birds. We have to check what led to the death of pigeons in this case,” he added.

Our vision at Food Lovers is to be India’s finest, foremost and most importantly, trusted content platform in the field of food, wine & spirits and dining. Advertising is clearly demarcated and kept distinct from editorial. We do our best not to blur the lines between the two.
We guard the independent voice of our editorial features fiercely. Because ultimately, our loyalty lies to our viewers, as guided by our credo: Truth in food, wine and dining.
We have chosen not to put up a paywall as we want our rich content to remain accessible to all. We have launched a ‘Support Food Lovers’ initiative to help us realize our vision of credible, high quality, independent food journalism – free for all, supported by those who can.
