Basel [Switzerland] - Culture Unlimited
Where the Rhine becomes a proper river, where the three countries of Germany, France and Switzerland meet, there lies a town full of surprises. Basel offers a one-of-a-kind selection of art and culture, and has one of the most beautiful and best maintained old towns in Europe.
It is not easy to describe Basel in a few words. Descriptions for example such as “cultural city of Switzerland” or “university town” are merely an attempt to give some sort of impression of the wealth of culture, history, relaxation and enjoyment to be found in the city. Whether it is a visit to one of the numerous museums, a dip in the Rhine or an evening at the theatre, allow yourself to be inspired by the joys that await you in Basel.
We hope you have a fantastic time here in Basel.

Basel off the beaten track: Parcours curator Samuel Leuenberger shares his top spots
Art Basel’s show in Basel doesn’t stop at the halls’ exit doors. For almost a decade, the Parcours sector has seen artworks dotted around Basel’s historical center: old churches, forgotten gardens, and many of the city’s myriad of museums have played host to some of Art Basel’s most daring artistic propositions.
This year, Parcours showcases 23 site-specific projects gathered around the theme ‘Telling Stories for the Future’. Curated by Samuel Leuenberger, it features sculptures and installations ranging from Pierre Huyghe’s beehive-headed statue to Hannah Weinberger’s sound intervention piped out of the sewers. Each is an invitation to experience the city anew.
A true Basler, Samuel Leuenberger has curated Parcours since 2016, and he knows the city’s every nook and cranny. In this exclusive interview, he takes us on a private tour of his favorite, off-the-beaten-track locations.
Parcours 2018 will culminate with Parcours Night on June 16 with a host of performances in and around the Münsterplatz area.
See Parcours’ map and full program here.

Hidden – Hidden Places in Switzerland / IWB Filter 4, Basel
The exhibition Hidden – Hidden Places in Switzerland allows visitors to experience unusual and hidden settings of Swiss everyday culture. The 25 or so photographs will be on show for the first time at IWB Filter 4 in Basel from 4 May 2018. Hidden is an art project by Basel curator Catherine Iselin and internationally acclaimed photographer Kostas Maros. Together they explored the question of what constitutes the fascination of hidden places. In search of the unusual ordinary, the peculiar and the unique, they have photographed 25 selected places throughout Switzerland. Sometimes a secret meeting room in the Bundeshaus, a magnetic laboratory at CERN or a pink calming cell in a high-security prison. The two project initiators have shared their passion for photography since their student days. The associated field of tension between the visible and the hidden and the question of how a feeling can be captured or aroused in the picture – without depriving it of the magic of the invisible – are central aspects of curating and photographing. This gave rise to the idea of realising an art project that portrays places and people who appear hidden, fascinate their viewers, arouse curiosity and leave their impressions.
More than 100 photographs were taken, which will be shown in May 2018 from Friday to Sunday at IWB Filter 4 as part of the exhibition Hidden – Hidden Places in Switzerland and will be shown in the book of the same name, which will be published by Christoph Merian Verlag at the end of April 2018. The varied programme of events accompanying the exhibition and the comprehensive publication accompany the exhibition and provide in-depth insights into the art project.

Swantje Hielscher at Kunsthalle Basel, Switzerland
The current exhibition at Kunsthalle Basel, “Rooms Look Back”, (until November 16, 2008) brings together three international artists (Rosa Barba, Ursula Mayer, Margaret Salmon) who are concerned with the presentation of different concepts of space in the medium of film. Under the title “Insert”, three other artists (Manuela Leinhoss, Swantje Hielscher, and Davide Cascio) take positions on the exhibition using other media.
This video documents the opening reception of Insert II: Swantje Hielscher. German artist Swantje Hielscher was born in 1980, she lives and works in Berlin. For Insert II she shows works on paper and objects. On display are the works Window I, Window IV, Quest/Alphabet, and Still. For hall 3 of Kunsthalle Basel she created a site-specific work. She measured the room with the aid of a paper in format DIN A 4, starting at the left hand corner moving her way across the walls vertically. The number of A 4 papers she used are turned into an object: a display case in the form of the floor plan of the space.
Rooms Look Back is curated by Simone Neuenschwander, the Inserts are co-curated by Annette Amberg.
