The Arciprestal and Insigne Basilica minor of Santa Maria or Arciprestal Church of Our Lady of the Assumption , is located the place of the Eucharistic Congress of the city of Elche ( Valencian Community , Spain ) and constructed in baroque style between 1672 and 1784 and in her participated several architects among whom was the Castilian Jaime Bort and Meliá , author of the baroque façade of the cathedral of Murcia .
The works began in 1672 under the direction of Francisco Verde , succeeding him Pedro Quintana and Ferrán Fouquet . It is a good example of Spanish Baroque. This building presents different architectural styles, from the Italianate baroque of the main front, the rococo of the other fronts and the girola, the neoclassic of the interior, to the medieval reminiscences.
In the Middle Ages was the Muslim mosque in this site that at that time was one of the ends of the old Vila Murada . When the king James I of Aragon conquered the city in 1265 , it consecrated the mosque under the invocation of Santa Maria. On its ruins was constructed a first Christian temple of Gothic style that was demolished and for the third time the present one was constructed.
This church has the great tradition of celebrating in it the Misteri d'Elx (Misterio de Elche) choral work in ancient Valencian that is represented during the days 14 and 15 of August of each year by virtue of a papal bull granted by His Holiness the Pope Urban VIII .
On February 20, before the civil war was partially destroyed, being restored years later by the architect Antonio Serrano Peral . In the fire that suffered at the hands of republicans in February 1936 the original image of the Virgin of the Assumption disappeared, under whose dedication the temple is consecrated, and later replaced by a new one, the work of the Valencian sculptor José Capuz . Although the legend tells that a group of religious could hide the image of Our Lady so that it was not destroyed. This version of the facts loses credibility when the original image has not yet been found.

ST. NICHOLAS CATHEDRAL - ALICANTE - SPAIN
The San Nicolas Cathedral in Alicante - Spain - is Roman Catholic co-cathedral that was built in 15th century and developed until 18th century. It's foundations are over a base of a mosque.
The cathedral is spaciously proportioned. It has a Latin Cross ground plan with six interconnecting side chapels and an ambulatory in the head part which travels behind the high altar. Its impressive blue dome rises to 45 meters above the ground. Of Many visitors regard the cloisters specially interesting is the cloister, adorned with grilles and wooden doors. The chapel of Holy Communion, configured similar to a Greek cross-planned temple, is considered to be one of the most beautiful examples of Spanish Baroque.

Castillo de Santa Bárbara: Ubicado en la sierra de Benacantil, frente a la playa del Postiguet. Acceso en ascensor por la ladera de la playa o con vehículo, accediendo por la calle Vázquez de Mella, detrás del MARQ y el hospital Perpetuo Socorro.
Basílica de Santa María: Se sitúa en la Plaza de Santa María, se llega andando por la calle Jorge Juan o la calle Villavieja.
Salazones Quintana: Lo encontramos en la calle del Poeta Quintana, paralela con la calle del Mercado Central, Avenida de Alfonso X el sabio.

La Basílica de Santa María es el principal monumento religioso de Elche. En este templo se representa el Misterio de Elche, drama lírico declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad.

Elchen kaupungin pääkirkko Santa Marian basilika tuhoutui tulipalossa laajoilta osin samaan aikaan vuonna 1936 kuin Torreviejan pääkirkko. Santa Marian basilika on rakennettu 1600-luvulla. Se jälleenrakennettiin tulipalon jälkeen. Alkuperäisenä on säilynyt komea kaksikerroksinen barokkityylinen pääportaali, joka on rikkaasti koristeltu.
Elche is also known as the City of Palms as it is located within the largest Palm forest in Europe. This city has two international UNESCO awards; one for its palm groves and the other for its religious play, the Misteri d’Elx which the people of the city have performed annually in August since Medieval times. The week’s play is rounded off with one of Spain’s loudest firework displays know as the Nit d’Alba.
Once you have visited the Tourist Office, just above the car park, you can explore Elche by following our Elche city walking route. Why not climb the narrow steps up to the roof of the Basilica, from where you get a wonderful view over Elche and its palms. You can visit the various museums including the award winning Archaeological and History Museum or get to know more about the palms at the Huerto del Cura. Stroll through the Municipal Park and go into the Visitors Centre for an audio visual introduction to the city or take the small Tourist Train.
Elche has some great shopping. The Salvador Artesano shoe factory outlet is the largest of all the Salvador Artesano shops and is a must for all shoe lovers as it is about the size of a football pitch! Nearby is the El Corte Ingles department store. It sells everything that you would expect, is open during siesta and has free parking! The L’Aljub is a large indoor mall with Eroski, Bershka, C&A, Zara, H&M, Primark and many more shops, plus a Comic Park to keep the Children entertained and free parking!
Monuments
Basílica of Santa Maria: Located at Plaza de Santa Maria the Basilica is a good example of spanish barroco, but it also keeps traits from previous styles rococo or neoclassical. It is said that the Mystery Play of Elche was first performed here. The tower offers an splendid view of the Palm Grove. Entance to the Basilica: free. Tower: 2 €.
Town Hall: Plaza de Baix 1. The Town Hall dates from the 15th century. One of the clocks gives the hour by a puppet hitting a bell with a hummer.
Palace of Altamira: Calle Diagonal del Palau 7. Once a nobility house, also a prison and textile factory until the 20th century, now it's been restored. It contains the Museo Arqueológico y de Historia de Elche. Entrance: 3 €.
Calahorra Tower: Calle Uberna 14. Built between the 12th and 13th centuries the tower is a remain of the old city walls. Entrance: 2 €.

El castillo palacio de Altamira fue residencia de los señores de Elche entre los siglos XV y XIX, su torre del Homenaje albergó también a monarcas -Jaime II, Pedro IV y los Reyes Católicos- durante su estancia en la villa y acogió las sesiones del Consejo General de la ciudad hasta el siglo XV.
