Raymundo Damasceno: the strategy of the church in Latin America
Brazil is the largest country in South America in both size and population. But the beauty of this region contrasts with the tragedy of poverty in Brazil, since half of its inhabitants live in absolute poverty.
Raymundo Damasceno, Archbishop of Aparecida and the president of the Latin American Episcopal Council says that to eradicate poverty and corruption in Latin America, people need basic stability and structure.
Mons. Raymundo Damasceno
President of CELAM
In the favelas the population is abandoned. They have no resources to access education, health or work. Nor are they building in those places. The state must provide education and improved living conditions for those living in favelas. That is the solution.
According to Archbishop Damasceno, the Church in Latin America must respond with what he calls a permanent state of mission.
Mons. Raymundo Damasceno
President of CELAM
We want our parishes to be missionary. We shouldnt have to wait for people to come to us, instead the parishes are going to meet the most most needy, disadvantaged and most distant people.
This sense of permanent mission refers to the evangelization the promotion and development of the individual.
Mons. Raymundo Damasceno
President of CELAM
It is not just to help you live a spiritual life, a supernatural life in communion with God but also to live a life with dignity, carried out all aspects of the person. In the family, social and cultural matters.
In fact that was the message behind Benedict XVI speech at the inaugural session of the V General Conference of the Episcopate of Latin America and the Caribbean in 2007.
The trip marked the Popes first intercontinental voyage of his pontificate.
Mons. Raymundo Damasceno
President of CELAM
This visit was a boost for the whole Church in Latin America to continue working with the missionary spirit.
A solution to end the scourge of poverty. A solution that involves all of Latin America.

Características: O templo apresenta características do estilo barroco final e do neoclássico.

STORYLINE:
Catholic worshippers in Sao Paulo prayed on Tuesday night for the safe arrival of Pope Benedict XVI to Brazil on Wednesday.
Workers were putting the finishing touches to the monastery of Sao Bento, which included the construction of a bullet proof booth for the Pope on the monastery balcony.
Pope Benedict XVI will bless the faithful of this massive Brazilian city of 20 (m) million during his much awaited visit.
We believe when we take communion we share a spiritual connection among members of the church, and the Pope is a symbol of that unity, said Mathias Braga, a Sao Bento monastery monk.
The Pope's five-day-tour of the world's most populous Roman Catholic country is aimed at reversing the flight of Catholics who have abandoned the church to become Protestants - or who simply stopped attending Mass amid profound societal change.
Aiming at energising the Church's more than 120 (m) million Catholics, Pope Benedict will canonise the country's first native saint, hold masses that could attract (m) millions and open a conference of Latin American bishops in the holy shrine of Aparecida.
Nearly half the world's 1 (b) billion Catholics live in Latin America, but Pentecostal churches are enjoying explosive growth, promising divine intervention to lift parishioners from lives of misery in a region where the divide between rich and poor is among the worst on the planet.
Brazil's census shows the percentage of citizens characterising themselves as Catholics plunged from 89 percent in 1980 to 74 percent in 2000, while those calling themselves evangelical Protestants rose from seven percent to 15 percent.
The Pope's visit is bound to resurrect old debates about liberation theology an issue that bedevilled his predecessor Pope John Paul II, and remain unresolved to this day.
Liberation theology is a school of religious thought that focuses on Jesus Christ as not only the Redeemer but also the liberator of the oppressed.
It emphasises the Christian mission to bring justice to the poor and oppressed, particularly through political activism, a theory which does not have the complete support of the Holy See of the Roman Catholic Church .
The Vatican's Latin American leaders also struggle with a host of secular issues, including Brazil's free distribution of condoms to combat AIDS, a rise in second marriages not recognised by the church and Mexico City's move to legalise abortion.
Many wonder whether Benedict will be able to make a difference, especially since the church's situation worsened in Latin America despite frequent visits by his beloved predecessor, John Paul II.
Some also see the German-born Benedict as out of touch with the developing world, an image the Vatican has tried to counter by emphasising the pope's concern for problems ranging from poverty and debt to the fight against arms trafficking.

SUMMARY
=======
In the Catholic Church, the veneration of Mary, mother of Jesus, encompasses various Marian devotions which include prayer, pious acts, visual arts, poetry, and music devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Popes have encouraged it, while also taking steps to reform some manifestations of it. The Holy See has insisted on the importance of distinguishing true from false devotion, and authentic doctrine from its deformations by excess or defect. There are significantly more titles, feasts, and venerative Marian practices among Roman Catholics than in other Western Christian traditions. The term hyperdulia indicates the special veneration due to Mary, greater than the ordinary dulia for other saints, but utterly unlike the latria due only to God. The term Mariolatry is a Protestant pejorative label for perceived excessive Catholic devotion to Mary.
Belief in the incarnation of God the Son through Mary is the basis for calling her the Mother of God, which was declared a dogma at the Council of Ephesus in 431. At the Second Vatican Council and in Pope John Paul II's encyclical Redemptoris mater, she is spoken of also as Mother of the Church.Growth of Roman Catholic veneration of Mary and Mariology has often come not from official declarations, but from Marian writings of the saints, popular devotion, and at times reported Marian apparitions. The Holy See approves only a select few as worthy of belief; most recently the 2008 recognition of apparitions as far back as 1665.Further pious veneration of the Blessed Virgin Mary encouraged by Popes are exhibited in the canonical coronations granted to popular Marian images venerated in a particular locality all over the world, while Marian movements and societies with millions of members have arisen from belief in events such as Akita, Fátima, and Lourdes, and other reasons.

SUMMARY
=======
The Blessed Virgin Mary has been one of the major subjects of Western Art for centuries. Numerous pieces of Marian art in the Catholic Church covering a range of topics have been produced, from masters such as Michelangelo and Botticelli to works made by unknown peasant artisans.Marian art forms part of the fabric of Roman Catholic Marian culture through their emotional impact on the veneration of the Blessed Virgin. Images such as Our Lady of Guadalupe and the many artistic renditions of it as statues are not simply works of art but are a central elements of the daily lives of the Mexican people. Both Hidalgo and Zapata flew Guadalupan flags and depictions of the Virgin of Guadalupe continue to remain a key unifying element in the Mexican nation. The study of Mary via the field of Mariology is thus inherently intertwined with Marian art.The body of teachings that constitute Roman Catholic Mariology consist of four basic Marian dogmas: Perpetual virginity, Mother of God, Immaculate conception and Assumption into Heaven, derived from Biblical scripture, the writings of the Church Fathers, and the traditions of the Church. Other influences on Marian art have been the Feast days of the Church, Marian apparitions, writings of the saints and popular devotions such as the rosary, the Stations of the Cross, or total consecration, and also papal initiatives, and Marian papal encyclicals and Apostolic Letters.
Each of these fundamental Mariological beliefs has given rise to Roman Catholic Marian art that has become part of Mariology, by emphasizing Marian veneration, being celebrated in specific Marian feasts, or becoming part of key Roman Catholic Marian churches. This article's focus is primarily on how the artistic component of Roman Catholic Mariology has represented the fundamental Marian doctrines of the Catholic Church, and has thus interacted with them, creating a force that has shaped Catholic Mariology over the centuries.

Our Lady Of Lujan
Following the initial wave of religious enthusiasm that beset the conquistadors and early settlers in the southern part of the Western Hemisphere, many communities suffered relapses, particularly those which were isolated and thus felt more disheartened by the burden of their strenuous daily struggle. The city of Cordova, in the interior of Argentina, was particularly aware that the religious spirit of the city was slowly dying out. In 1630, a Portuguese settler decided that he would do something to change this distressing situation and he asked a friend to go to Brazil and to bring back with him a statue of the Blessed Virgin. The friend duly purchased two very simple statues, and his trip from Brazil to Buenos Aires was uneventful. But in the capital, before starting on his return trip inland, he made very elaborate preparations, because in those days, no traveler was safe from attacks by the Indians. He organized a whole caravan of covered wagons to protect himself. Argentina is still a land of vast dimensions, endless plains, romantic mountains, and blessedly fertile soil. Three hundred years ago, when great distances always meant endless long trips, every stopover on a journey was an event to remember.
The caravan was bound to reach Cordova as soon as possible. Providence, however, decided otherwise. The Portuguese settler who wanted to renew the religious life of his city appears to us from the perspective of three centuries, as a mere instrument of God, destined to perform something of a different nature through his pious determination. One statue reached its destination in due time, and did not become famous, while the other was never to reach Cordova; it was left behind at the first stopover, a ranch. There it was to give origin to one of the greatest sanctuaries in Latin America, Lujan.
Of two small statues purchased by the settler one represented the Mother of God with her Child, and the other, the Blessed Virgin of the Immaculate Conception. Both were simple, about twenty inches high, made of terra cotta. After leaving Buenos Aires the caravan traveled for one day when, near a ranch, the horses of one of the wagons stopped and despite every effort on the part of the driver, could not be budged from the spot. But the animals started off again as soon as the figure of the Immaculate Conception had been removed from the cart and carried into the ranch. The ranch owner entrusted it to the care of a Negro slave from Angola.
This humble man, by some inner compulsion, dedicated himself completely to the care of this statue. And apparently it was at his insistence that soon afterwards a little chapel was built for it. From this moment, miraculous events set in.
The statue disappeared from the chapel, though its doors were properly locked and guarded during the night. The statue was found at the very spot where the horses of the original caravan had stopped and refused to move any further! This transference was repeated several times. Ecclesiastical authorities finally decided that a new church should be built to enshrine the figure of the Immaculate Conception.
Lujan today is a great religious center, with many churches. Soon after the first church had been completed, it proved insufficient to provide for the pilgrims who came from all over the vast country. Many recorded miracles occurred, and various Kings of Spain (Argentina was then a colony of Spain) bestowed upon the shrine gifts and jewels as ornate as those donated to the oldest and most famous ones in Europe. Argentina has many other holy places dedicated to the Virgin, but Lujan is the most outstanding. Several religious orders, the Carmelites, the Dominicans, the Jesuits, the Franciscans and others have established churches and monasteries around the shrine, which now is in the custody of the Lazarists.
