Lisbon citytrip | Basilica da Estrela
Basilica da Estrela, Lisbon. We took Tram 28 to Estrela Basilica. Its probably the most impressive church in Lisbon! Don't forget to enjoy the roof-top views!
The Basilica is situated at the top of one of Lisbon’s seven hills which extenuates the height of the huge rococo domed roof.

Jardim da Estrela Lisboa | Basilica da Estrela
Jardim da Estrela Lisboa | Basilica da Estrela
The most beautiful park in Lisbon is Jardim da Estrela near Basílica da Estrela.
Seeking green respite? Opposite the Basílica da Estrela, this 1852 green space is perfect for a stroll, with paths weaving past pine, monkey puzzle and palm trees, rose and cacti beds and the centrepiece – a giant banyan tree. Kids love the duck ponds and animal-themed playground. There are several open-air cafes where you can recharge.
The Jardim da Estrela is a delightfully maintained park which is opposite the magnificent Basilica da Estrela that lies to the west of Lisbon. The park was originally called the Jardim Guerra Junqueiro but due to its close proximity to the basilica the name has all but ceased to be used.
The Jardim da Estrela is open to the public every day from 7 am until midnight. The park contains carefully maintained gardens with numerous exotic plants, a small duck pond and at the weekends is full with young Portuguese families. The jardim da Estrela is the prefect place for a place to sit and relax under the glorious Lisbon weather and take a break from the stress of being a tourist!
Construction of the public are was started in 1842 “as a place for Lisbon residents to enjoy” when the lower class were not toiling in the dangerous jobs of the 19th century. The funding for the landscaping are sculptures dried up during the political instability of the 1860’s but the park was opened in 1873. For over 70 years a lion was kept in a cage much to the delight of the parks goers, now days only ducks are the only animals in the park.
A focal point of the Jardim da Estrela is green wrought-iron bandstand where musicians play in the summer. The bandstand was original located in the Public Park of Lisbon, part of which was transformed into the Avenida da Liberdade. The band stand which was constructed in 1884 and was moved to the Jardim da Estrela in 1936. The British Cemetery is located in the north of the gardens, which lies the lies the tomb of Henry Fielding, the English novelist and playwright.

Estrela Basilica, Lisbon , Portugal
The Estrela Basilica was built by
order of Queen Maria I of Portugal,
as a fulfilled promise for giving birth to a son
(José, Prince of Brazil). Construction started
in 1779 and the basilica was finished in 1790,
after the death of José caused by smallpox in 1788.
The huge church has a giant dome, and
is located in a hill in what was at the time the
western part of Lisbon and can be viewed from far away. The style is in late baroque and neoclassical. The front has two twin bell towers and includes statues of saints and some allegoric figures. A large quantity of grey, pink and yellow marble was used in the floor and walls, in intricate geometric patterns. The roof provides stunning
views of Lisbon and the dome is open for touring.

Jardim da Estrela & Cascais Beach, Lisbon, Portugal with Imo and Izzy.????????
Jardim da Estrela & Cascais Beach, Lisbon, Portugal with Imo and Izzy.????????
It's the Sunday after Paddy's Day in Lisbon. Imo and the invisible boyfriend head out for a stroll around the Bairro Alto area, up past the Lisbon Botanical Garden and Science Museum, through Rato and on to Jardim da Estrela.
They sample the delights of the meia de leite, an abatanado and some pasteis de nata in the little café there. Imo takes the opportunity to give a very quick in-context basic Portuguese lesson on those little bits of vocabulary!
Fortified, they explore the park and come across some most extraordinary trees with very fascinating roots.
On exiting the park, they pass the Basílica da Estrela, and take an alternative root back to their Airbnb, also passing the Jardim de São Bento on their way.
After a quick pit stop at the apartment, they head back out with Izzy, stroll down to Cais do Sodré train station, pick up a few picnic items from Pingo Doce and get on the train to Cascais - on the Linha Cascais.
Imo and Izzy try some Portuguese food and give some feedback.
As they travel down the Linha Cascais, Imo points out tourist highlights such as the Electricity Museum, Padrão dos descobrimentos, Torre de Belém and Centro Cultural de Belém.
At Cascais they hang out at Praia da Rainha (a little beach there).
Thanks so much for joining us on our adventure!
Imo and Izzy. xxx

I will always write closed captions in UK English for my vlogs, not only to make them more accessible in general but also to create a useful resource for advanced learners of the English language who may enjoy regular bursts of pseudo-immersion in English in a narrative context with the additional benefit of corresponding on-screen text.
These videos will not generally feature background music making them extra suitable for people who aren't keen on pop music! x
