Venice, Italy: St. Mark's Basilica
More info about travel to Venice: Among Europe's churches, the Byzantine marvel of St. Mark's stands alone. After the saint's remains were smuggled here in 828, Venice took his symbol (the winged lion) as their own. Built with pillaged materials, some describe the church's eclectic style as Early Ransack. The outside is a riot of domes, columns, and statues; the interior is covered with mosaics, colored marbles, and oriental treasures.
At you'll find money-saving travel tips, small-group tours, guidebooks, TV shows, radio programs, podcasts, and more on this destination.

VENICE: St Mark's Square / Piazza San Marco [HD]
PIAZZA SAN MARCO, known in English as St Mark's Square, is the principal public square of Venice, where it is generally known just as the Piazza. All other urban spaces in the city (except the Piazzetta San Marco and the Piazzale Roma) are called campi (fields).
Basilica di San Marco / St Mark's Basilica
is the most famous of the city's churches and one of the best known examples of Byzantine architecture. Originally it was the chapel of the Doge's, and has only been the city's cathedral since 1807, when it became the seat of the Patriarch of Venice.
Campanile di San Marco / St Mark's Campanile
is the bell tower of St Mark's Basilica, one of the most recognizable symbols of the city.
Torre dell'Orologio / St Mark's Clock Tower
Both the tower and the clock date from the last decade of the 15th century, though the mechanism of the clock has subsequently been much altered. To the right of the clock-tower is the closed church of San Basso.
The Procuratie (literally, procuracies) are three connected buildings on St Mark's Square in Venice. They are historic buildings over arcades, the last of them completed, to finish off the square, under Napoleon's occupation. They were built in the early 16th century, formerly the homes and offices of the Procurators of St. Mark, high officers of state in the days of the republic of Venice.
______________________
PIAZZETTA DI SAN MARCO is (strictly speaking) not part of the Piazza but an adjoining open space connecting the south side of the Piazza to the waterway of the lagoon.
Palazzo Ducale / Doge's Palace
was the residence of the Doge of Venice, the supreme authority of the Republic of Venice, opening as a museum in 1923.
Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana / National Library of St Mark's
is one of the earliest surviving public manuscript depositories in the country, holding one of the greatest classical texts collections in the world. The library was provided with a building designed by Jacopo Sansovino. Building started in 1537 and it was extended, after the death of Sansovino, by Vincenzo Scamozzi in 1588/91.
Two large granite columns carry symbols of the two patron saints of Venice. The first is Saint Theodore, who was the patron of the city before St Mark, holding a spear and with a crocodile to represent the dragon which he was said to have slain. This is made up of parts of antique statues and is a copy (the original is kept in the Doges Palace). The second (eastern) column has a creature representing a winged lion — the Lion of Venice — which is the symbol of St Mark.

Inside St Mark’s Basilica: An After Hours Tour
Forget about skip the line tours. The best way to visit St Mark’s Basilica is after it has closed to the general public.
A regular visit the Basilica San Marco in St Mark's Square, is little more than a procession through a dimly lit church. Most come away underwhelmed.
The real magnificence of St Mark’s is found when the crowds leave, the lights are turned on and the mosaics which cover the walls and ceiling are revealed.
A once in a life time experience :)

STUNNING INTERIOR OF ST. MARK'S BASILICA: CHURCH OF GOLD!
When you first see the stunning interior of St. Mark's Basilica (Basilica di San Marco), you are in awe of the eight centuries of golden mosaics. In fact, there are over 85,000 square feet of mosaics. When you look up, you will see the five main cupolas or domes which are also richly decorated with these religious mosaics, but when you look down, you will also see the beautiful intricate marble inlaid floor. When you visit the St. Mark's Basilica Treasury (8:20), you will find hundreds of gold and silver relics, mostly taken from Constantinople in 1204 after the Fourth Crusade. After we take a tour of the inside, we will also see the magnificent exterior of the basilica (14:24), and learn about it's history as well. No visit to Venice, Italy is complete without visiting St. Mark's Basilica!

VENICE, MYSTERIOUS 3rd century BYZANTINE SCULPTURE in ST MARK'S BASILICA ⛪ (ITALY)
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's view the very curious 'The Portrait of the Four Tetrarchs' which is a porphyry sculpture group of four Roman emperors dating from around 300 AD. Since the Middle Ages it has been fixed to a corner of the façade of St Mark's Basilica in Venice, Italy. It probably originally formed part of the decorations of the Philadelphion in Constantinople, and was removed to Venice in 1204 or soon after.
Venice, the capital of northern Italy’s Veneto region, is built on more than 100 small islands in a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea. It has no roads, just canals – including the Grand Canal thoroughfare – lined with Renaissance and Gothic palaces. The central square, Piazza San Marco, contains St. Mark’s Basilica, which is tiled with Byzantine mosaics, and the Campanile bell tower offering views of the city’s red roofs.
Italy, a European country with a long Mediterranean coastline, has left a powerful mark on Western culture and cuisine. Its capital, Rome, is home to the Vatican as well as landmark art and ancient ruins. Other major cities include Florence, with Renaissance masterpieces such as Michelangelo’s David and Brunelleschi's Duomo; Venice, the city of canals; and Milan, Italy’s fashion capital.

360 video: Basilica di San Marco, Venice, Italy
One of the most iconic landmarks in Venice, this 12th-century basilica is also called The Church of Gold for its magnificent decorations and design. Built in a mix of Italian and Byzantine styles, it is one of the best examples of Italo-Byzantine architecture that you can see. Fans of computer games may remember it from the second instalment of the Assassin's Creed series.
It's definitely worth going inside as well, its gilded interior with gold ground mosaics is just incredible. The treasury houses a unique collection of Byzantine metalwork.
Be aware, though, that there tend to be enormous queues in front of the entrance. If you can, either buy the online skip-the-lines ticket, or time your visit for the low season.
Keep in mind, too, that it is forbidden to carry bags inside the basilica, as well as to take photographs.
