The basilica sanctuary of Santa Maria in Porto is an important place of Catholic worship in Ravenna ; it is located along via Roma, the road axis that crosses the historical center of the city from north to south, not far from Porta Nuova . It is home to the Sanctuary of the Madonna Greca , Patron of Ravenna.
In the first half of the fifteenth century , the Canonici Regolari of Santa Maria in Porto decided to build their own monastery in the city of Ravenna , adjacent to the church of Santa Maria in Porto Fuori . However, the Venetians demanded that the monastery be built within the city walls. Therefore, at the Porta Nuova, at the then southern end of the town, a land was occupied by houses, which were demolished on 5 August 1496 .
The construction of the monastery was started that same year and ended thirteen years later, in 1509 , although the canons settled there as early as 1503 . In 1511 Pope Julius II lived there during his trip to Romagna and, in that same year, the project for the church was presented by the Ravenna architect Bernardino Tavella ; its construction, however, began only in 1553 . It continued in the following decades: the cover of the central nave was built in 1561 , while the consecration took place on October 8, 1606 , by the Archbishop of Ravennaand cardinal camerlengo Pietro Aldobrandini . In 1710 the new high altar was built and, in 1784 , the façade was finished by Camillo Morigia .
In 1797 the church suffered the effects of the French invasion: in fact, the sanctuary was stripped and looted and the monks were expelled. The Pinacoteca di Brera preserves the painting, also called Pala Portuense depicting The Virgin enthroned with the Child, the Saints Anna, Elisabetta, Agostino and the Blessed Pietro degli Onesti by the painter Ercole de Roberti . The following year both the monastery and the church were closed, which were used as military barracks . Only in 1828 the monastery was reopened, but it was finally closed in 1886 due to the laws on the winding up of the ecclesiastical axis(Royal Decree No. 3036 of 7 July 1866), and became a confectionery establishment. At the end of the nineteenth century , the church of Santa Maria in Porto was given to the diocesan clergy, becoming a parish seat . He acquired the territory of the suppressed parish that belonged to the church of Santa Barbara . On the initiative of the archbishop Vincenzo Moretti (1871-1879) and his successors, the cult of the Greek Madonna was restored. On April 21, 1900 , in the celebrations for her eighth centenary, the image of the Virgin was solemnly crowned.
The basilica of Santa Maria in Porto rises in the initial stretch of Via Roma. The church, which overlooks a large rectangular square with flowerbeds , is preceded by a staircase , completed in 1783 . The white façade in Istrian stone , salient , is the work of Camillo Morigia and was completed in 1784 . It is divided into two bands superimposed by a high cornice : the lower part, of the Ionic order , corresponds to all three naves; the upper one, of Corinthian order , corresponds only to the central nave.

RAVENNA: Sicurezza a rischio, S. Maria in Porto chiede aiuto | VIDEO

Ravenna is the capital city of the Province of Ravenna, in the Emilia-Romagna region of Northern Italy. It was the capital city of the Western Roman Empire from 402 until that empire collapsed in 476.
It then served as the capital of the Kingdom of the Ostrogoths until it was re-conquered in 540 by the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire. Afterwards, the city formed the centre of the Byzantine Exarchate of Ravenna until the invasion of the Franks in 751, after which it became the seat of the Kingdom of the Lombards.
Although an inland city, Ravenna is connected to the Adriatic Sea by the Candiano Canal. It is known for its well-preserved late Roman and Byzantine architecture, and has eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The church of St. John the Evangelist is from the 5th century, erected by Galla Placidia after she survived a storm at sea. It was restored after the World War II bombings. The belltower contains four bells, the two majors dating back to 1208.
The 6th-century church of the Spirito Santo, which has been quite drastically altered since the 6th century. It was originally the Arian cathedral. The façade has a 16th-century portico with five arcades.
The St. Francis basilica, rebuilt in the 10th–11th centuries over a precedent edifice dedicated to the Apostles and later to St. Peter. Behind the humble brick façade, it has a nave and two aisles. Fragments of mosaics from the first church are visible on the floor, which is usually covered by water after heavy rains (together with the crypt). Here the funeral ceremony of Dante Alighieri was held in 1321. The poet is buried in a tomb annexed to the church, the local authorities having resisted for centuries all demands by Florence for return of the remains of its most famous exile.
The Baroque church of Santa Maria Maggiore (525–532, rebuilt in 1671). It houses a picture by Luca Longhi.
The church of San Giovanni Battista (1683), also in Baroque style, with a Middle Ages campanile.
The basilica of Santa Maria in Porto (16th century), with a rich façade from the 18th century. It has a nave and two aisles, with a high cupola. It houses the image of famous Greek Madonna, which was allegedly brought to Ravenna from Constantinople.
The nearby Communal Gallery has various works from Romagnoli painters.
The Rocca Brancaleone (Brancaleone Castle), built by the Venetians in 1457. Once part of the city walls, it is now a public park. It is divided into two parts: the true Castle and the Citadel, the latter having an extent of 14,000 m2 (150,694.75 sq ft).
The so-called Palace of Theoderic, in fact the entrance to the former church of San Salvatore. It includes mosaics from the true palace of the Ostrogoth king.
The church of Sant'Eufemia (18th century), gives access to the so-called Stone Carpets Domus (6th–7th century): this houses splendid mosaics from a Byzantine palace.

Ravenna Santa Maria Maggiore
Ravenna Santa Maria Maggiore
