7 STEPS TO DISCOVERING AND LIVING YOUR LIFE'S INSPIRED MISSION:
PROGRAM YOUR MIND FOR SUCCESS:
The Basilica of Our Lady of Licheń [ˈlixɛɲ] is a Roman Catholic church located in the village of Licheń Stary near Konin in the Greater Poland Voivodeship in Poland. It was designed by Barbara Bielecka and built between 1994 and 2004. The construction was funded by pilgrims' donations.[1] With a tower measuring 141.5 meters in height, it is one of the tallest and largest churches in the world.
The history of the foundation of the church dates back to 1813, when Tomasz Kłossowski a Polish soldier fighting under Napoleon near Leipzig was seriously wounded. He invoked Our Lady, begging her not to let him die in a foreign land. According to legend, she appeared to him wearing a golden crown, a dark red gown, with a golden mantle, and holding a white eagle in her right hand. She comforted the soldier and promised he would recover and return to Poland.[2] Tomasz was instructed him to have an image of her made, and to place the image in a public place so that My people will pray before this image and shall draw many graces at My hands in the hardest times of trial.[3]
With the nave 120 meters long and 77 meters wide, with a central dome 98 meters high, and with a tower 141.5 metres tall, it is Poland's largest church and one of the largest churches in the world. The church is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, Queen of Poland whose icon, perhaps dating back to the 18th century, is displayed in the basilica's main altar. It is one of Poland's principal pilgrimage sites.[4]
Pope John Paul II blessed the Basilica in 1999.[5]

POLAND: LICHEN: PREPARATIONS FOR POPE VISIT
Eng/Polish/Nat
On Monday Pope John Paul the Second will visit the smallest town on his itinerary, Lichen.
There the Catholic faithful are building a huge basilica in honour of the Virgin Mary, that will be twice as wide as Notre Dame in Paris and taller than Milan's main cathedral.
For many in Poland the basilica at Lichen is a sign that the Catholic church is still too strong a force.
In the tiny village of Lichen, the new basilica rises like a behemoth out of the fields.
And the basilica will still be a work in progress when the Pope gives it his official blessing in a ceremony early on Monday morning.
It will be Poland's largest church, bigger than a football field and capable of holding 200,000 (th) people.
The basilica is being built in honour of more than a thousand years of Christianity in Poland and in devotion to the Virgin Mary.
The centre of the basilica holds a 200 year old painting known as the Our Lady of Sorrows, Queen of Poland that nearly one-million people came to see last year.
Expected to cost nearly fifty million American dollars and funded entirely by donations.
To the thousands of faithful who pour into Lichen every day, it's not too much, or over the top.
SOUNDBITE: (Polish)
So many people come here and can't fit in that little cathedral. The new basilica is needed. It is so crowded here and people come from all over, not just Poland.
SUPER CAPTION: Vox Pop, Visitor to Lichen
SOUNDBITE: (Polish)
Probably it would be better to give the money that goes into this to people who need it, but the basilica is needed too.
SUPER CAPTION: Vox Pop, Visitor to Lichen
Father Makulski has devoted his life to getting the Lichen basilica built.
He is the one who has convinced thousands of Catholics to donate money to the project.
And he rejects criticism that the money could be better used.
SOUNDBITE: (Polish)
People are giving their money to build this basilica, not for something else. I can't for example take this money and go and build a hospital for young people suffering from venereal diseases. I can't. I have to put it towards the church because people are giving money for the church, not for anything else.
SUPER CAPTION: Father Eugeniusz Makulski
Although construction is not yet finished, builders are rushing to get the basilica into a presentable state for the Pope and the nearly 350,000 (th) worshippers expected here on Monday.
But the basilica at Lichen has many critics in Poland.
One of the loudest detractors is the Polish film director Krzysztof Zanussi, who says the basilica belongs on the Las Vegas strip.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
According to statistics, Lichen basilica is the seventh biggest Catholic church under construction in the world. It will be the biggest in Poland and in my opinion it will be the ugliest. That is something very depressing and very embarrassing because we have a great tradition of architecture, we have a thousand years of Christianity in this
country. But this is a moment when pop taste has taken over. This basilica would be appropriate for Las Vegas. Las Vegas is a symbol of bad taste all over the world.
SUPER CAPTION: Krysztof Zanussi, Culture critic and Film director
But the Catholic faithful do not think so.
Part of the project includes this huge statue of the Pope receiving Lichen as a gift from an average priest.
But not all Catholic priests feel that Lichen is needed.
Father Kazimierz Sowa, a journalist with a Catholic radio station, feels that the Lichen basilica is unnecessary in today's Poland and simply the product of an over-ambitious priest.

#basilica #lichen is the biggest church in #poland ????????
Construction of the Basilica of Our Lady of Licheń had began in 1994. It took only 10 years to complete. The project was prepared by polish architect Barbara Bielecka.
On June 22, 1994 on construction site, there was a Mass celebrated and the work started after ceremony of “turning the first spade”. On 25 Mai, 1995 the Primate of Poland Józef Glemp placed corner-stone brought from St. Peter’s tomb in Rome. First chapel- the Chapel of Holy Trinity- was completed in 1996 and Masses started to be celebrated there. John Pole II during his pilgrimage to Licheń blessed the basilica under construction.
6,5 mln bricks were used to build the basilica. The church composes a full harmony with surrounding scenery thanks to the color of the walls and window motifs – gold ears of grain. The last part of the church was the tower, which construction started in 1999 with excavating foundations, which go 8 meters deep. For assembly of the tower it was necessary to bring a special crane from Belgium capable of lifting materials to the height of 150 meters. Through the whole time of construction there was no serious accident.
On June 12, 20004 apostolic nuncio archbishop Józef Kowalczyk consecrated the basilica. At the same year Holy See approved obligatory memorial of Our Lady of Licheń on July 2 in the Diocese of Włocławek. In the next year, on February 25, pope John Paul II gave the title of minor basilica to the new church in Licheń.
Basilica of Lichen is the biggest church in Poland, 8th largest in Europe and 12th in the world. It is composed of three parts: two-storey shrine, belfry and tower. Towards the church leads 33 steps referring to years of earthly life of Jesus. There are 365 windows and 52 doors symbolizing number of days and weeks in the year. The vault of the Basilica is supported by 12 columns symbolising 12 Apostles. 4 columns supporting the dome symbolize the four Evangelists. There is placed a baldachin over the main altar. Here is the heart of the sanctuary - the tabernacle and above it, since 2006, the Miraculous Icon of Our Lady of Licheń. Higher there is a text of the oldest polish Marian song: The Mother of God.
There is also the largest organ in Poland. The instrument is composed of 5 independent sections, arranged in several places. To the right of the main nave, there is the Chapel of the Heart of Jesus, where in the wintertime pilgrims can adore the Blessed Sacrament and go to confession. To the left there is The Rosary Chapel with fresco depicting apparitions in Grąbliński Forrest.
In the lower part of the Basilica there are 5 chapels: of the Holy Trinity, of 108 Martyrs o the Second World War, of Blessed Father Stanislaus Papczyński, of the Shroud of Turin and of the Priests. The spectators tower high of 141,5 meters is opened for visitors since August 7, 2004. From spectators terraces which are placed at level of 98 and 114 meters can be viewed beautiful panorama of the Sanctuary and the surrounding areas. It is possible to get there with an elevator or by stairs. The bell tower is 65-meters high. There is hanged the largest bell in Poland, third largest in Europe, “Holy Mary the Mother of God” weighing 15 tons. The bell was made in Milan, Italy and it was consecrated by archbishop Joseph Kowalczyk on June 25, 2000.
