Cologne, a 2,000-year-old city spanning the Rhine River in western Germany, is the region’s cultural hub. A landmark of High Gothic architecture set amid reconstructed old town, the twin-spired Cologne Cathedral is also known for its gilded medieval reliquary and sweeping river views. The adjacent Museum Ludwig showcases 20th-century art, including many masterpieces by Picasso, and the Romano-Germanic Museum houses Roman antiquities.
Cologne is the largest city in the German federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the fourth-largest city in Germany (after Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich). Cologne is located within the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region, one of the major European metropolitan areas, and with more than ten million inhabitants, the largest in Germany. Cologne is located on both sides of the Rhine River, less than eighty kilometres from Belgium. The city's famous Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom) is the seat of the Catholic Archbishop of Cologne. The University of Cologne (Universität zu Köln) is one of Europe's oldest and largest universities.
Cologne is a major cultural centre for the Rhineland; it hosts more than thirty museums and hundreds of galleries. Exhibitions range from local ancient Roman archeological sites to contemporary graphics and sculpture. The Cologne Trade Fair hosts a number of trade shows such as Art Cologne, imm Cologne, Gamescom, and the Photokina.
Road building had been a major issue in the 1920s under the leadership of mayor Konrad Adenauer. The first German limited access road was constructed after 1929 between Cologne and Bonn. Cologne has a railway service with Deutsche Bahn InterCity and ICE-trains stopping at Köln Hauptbahnhof (Cologne Main Station), Köln Messe/Deutz and Cologne/Bonn Airport. ICE and TGV Thalys high-speed trains link Cologne with Amsterdam, Brussels (in 1h47, 9 departures/day) and Paris (in 3h14, 6 departures/day). Häfen und Güterverkehr Köln (Ports and Goods traffic Cologne, HGK) is one of the largest operators of inland ports in Germany. Ports include Köln-Deutz, Köln-Godorf, and Köln-Niehl I and II. Cologne's international airport is Cologne/Bonn Airport (CGN). It is also called Konrad Adenauer Airport after Germany's first post-war Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, who was born in the city and was mayor of Cologne from 1917 until 1933.

Cologne Carnival / Karneval Köln 2018 – Südstadtzoch
The Südstadtzoch Parade at South Town Cologne is one of the most traditional carnival parades of Cologne. It's a typical neighbourhood event, away from the commercial carnival usually seen on television and glossy brochures.
The Südstadtzoch Parade is one of the carnival highlights in Cologne at the so called “Vringsveedel” in the Southern City of Cologne. The Vringsveedel is one of the oldest parts of the city. The oldest basilica of Cologne, Saint Severin (dated from the 4th century) is the landmark of the Vringsveedel. The art and culture scene in the southern city of Cologne is legendary and is a quality feature for decades.

Places to see in ( Cologne - Germany ) Basilika St Aposteln
Places to see in ( Cologne - Germany ) Basilika St Aposteln
At the place where an old apostle's church stood just outside the city wall on the road to Aachen, the archbishop of Cologne Pilgrim ordered after 1021 to build a three-nave basilica and a convent adjoining it. But it was only after a fire in 1198 that the church received its present form, as can be seen in the depiction of the Mercator Plan of 1571. After the fire, the building was begun, to which Aposteln owes its importance, the most mature and most impressive three-choir choir in Cologne, one of the most fascinating architecture charts.
In contrast to the plan of the Latin cross, in which a straight long house in the head area is crossed by a straight transept at right angles, as in St. Aposteln in the west, at the three-conch choir three equal apses on the sides of a square to each other set that the shape of a cloverleaf results in the floor plan, which is why this solution is also called shamrock choir. This results in the east at the site of the choir, a building with its own center and equivalent side panels.
After the church is also the third oldest high school in Cologne, originally founded in 1860 in this street, named after the apostle church. The church fell gradually, had to be closed in 1822 because of dilapidation and was soon restored. Until 1891 extensive renovations took place. During the Second World War, the church was destroyed and only a few years ago, the final restoration of all parts was completed. Also, a forgotten, buried crypt was restored.
The number of the twelve apostles, the patron of the basilica, can also be found in the twelve pillars on which the church is founded.
For centuries St. Aposteln was a canon monastery. Only in 1802 after secularization did the parish take over the church. Pilgrim, the founder of the basilica, was praised by the Abbot of Reichenau for his efforts to unite mathematical speculation and heavenly harmony in the praise of God. This gift of Pilgrim shows itself in the building of the basilica, a complete work of perfect harmony. At the same time it is a constant demand for those who proclaim the praise of God at this Basilica, often in the language of music.
