JFK in Connecticut | 2013 | WFSB Hartford | Channel 3 | Dennis House
President John F. Kennedy's personal and political ties to Connecticut are examined by host Dennis House in the November 17, 2013 broadcast of Face the State on WFSB, Channel 3 in Hartford, as the week that marks the 50th anniversary of his assassination gets underway.
The story begins in 1930 when Kennedy was enrolled at the Canterbury School in New Milford at age 13. In 1931, he matriculated to the Choate School in Wallingford where he would graduate with the class of 1935. In an interview conducted in the Kennedy Room inside the Andrew Mellon Library, Choate Rosemary Hall archivist Judy Donald explains why the student body awarded Kennedy with the superlative Most Likely to Succeed despite an average academic performance, repeated illnesses that limited his participation in athletics, and living in the shadow of his popular and accomplished older brother Joe. In addition, retiring Choate English teacher and baseball coach Tom Yankus describes how impressed students were to have an alumnus running for and serving as President of the United States.
Back at the WFSB studio, former Congresswoman Barbara B. Kennelly (D), who represented Connecticut's 1st Congressional District from 1982 to 1999, tells Dennis about her family's friendship with Kennedy. Her father John Moran Bailey, chairman of the Connecticut and National Democratic Committees successively, was an early supporter of JFK for the vice presidential nomination in 1956 and the presidency in 1960. As such, he conducted fundraising for Kennedy and introduced him to several prominent politicians. Kennelly recalls her father hosting a cocktail party for the senator at their home in Hartford and visiting the president inside the Oval Office with her daughter, sister, and niece just one month before he would be shot to death in Dallas.
Kennedy spent the last two full days of the 1960 campaign in Connecticut, memorably arriving to an enthusiastic welcome in Waterbury at close to 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6. Color film of this trip to the Brass City ---provided by Connecticut Public Television (CPTV)--- shows the candidate walking in the morning daylight from a Catholic Mass at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception back to the Elton Hotel. From there, black and white footage documents JFK in Hartford on the eve of Election Day, Monday, Nov. 7, driving in an open-car motorcade on Main Street, passing State House Square en route to the Hartford Times Building to address a large crowd from its balcony. He can then be seen crossing the Connecticut River on the Founders Bridge while entering East Hartford.
President Kennedy made two visits to Connecticut during his 1,063 days in that office, both of them in 1962. On June 11, he received an honorary doctorate from Yale University in New Haven and delivered the Ivy League institution's commencement address, using the irony of his Harvard education to poke fun at his Eli hosts. He would return for a final time on October 17 in the midst of the Cuban Missile Crisis, campaigning in Bridgeport, Waterbury, and New Haven for Abraham Ribicoff ---former governor and Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW)--- in his bid for the seat in the U.S. Senate being vacated by Sen. Prescott Bush (R), father of President George H.W. Bush and grandfather of President George W. Bush. [On Nov. 6, Ribicoff (D) would narrowly defeat Rep. Horace Seely-Brown, Jr. (R-2nd) 51% to 49%. In 1952, Bush had beaten Ribicoff by a similar margin in an election for the same seat. Bush won reelection in 1956 against Rep. Thomas Dodd (D-1st) who would ultimately reach the U.S. Senate by besting the other incumbent, Sen. William Purtell (R), in 1958.]
Next, members of Connecticut's current Congressional delegation are asked on Capitol Hill what they remember about learning that President Kennedy had been assassinated. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D) was walking across Harvard Yard in Cambridge, Massachusetts; Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-3rd) was in class at Marymount College in Tarrytown, New York; and as a student at East Hartford High School, Rep. John Larson (D-1st) recalls hearing an announcement made on the school's public address system.
In the final segment, Dennis House interviews Ted Kennedy, Jr., an advocate for the disabled and the son of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) and nephew of both Sen. Robert F. Kennedy (D-N.Y.) and President Kennedy. Co-founder and president of the Marwood Group, a New York healthcare consulting firm, the Branford, Conn. resident tells Dennis what he believes is JFK's lasting legacy. (He will serve in the state Senate from 2015 to 2019.)
This is the first of two editions of the Connecticut Remembers JFK series on Face the State. The second one, which was broadcast on Nov. 24, 2013 and reviews how the assassination was reported by Channel 3 (WTIC-TV in 1963), WTIC Radio, and The Hartford Times evening newspaper, can be viewed on YouTube at
