The Basque and Bayonne History Museum is located in the Maison Dagourette, a late 16th century town house on the banks of the River Nive. Opened in 1924, the museum holds the biggest collection devoted to the Basque people, culture and customs. The town house is listed as a historic monument and is evidence of the maritime activity once present in this area of the town. Such well preserved buildings are rare and of public interest both from an artistic and historical point of view.
The brochure issued for the official opening on 2nd February 1924 welcomed visitors with the Basque phrase Hemen sartzen dena bere etxean da meaning You who enter here are home. The museum still lives up to this welcoming motto aiming to be a place where ideas and views, knowledge and research, culture and lifestyles are exchanged.
Artefacts and works of art collected mainly during the early part of the 20th century illustrate the transition within Basque society through history to the present day. Together they tell the story of Bayonne as a major port and melting pot of French, Basque, Gascon and Jewish cultures.

Bayonne. Basque region South West France. March 2017
I was staying in Biarritz in March 2017. The Hotel owner where I was staying recommended that I visit Bayonne, and I am glad that I did.
Bayonne is a city in the Basque Country region of southwest France, where the Nive and Adour rivers meet. Narrow medieval streets characterize the old Grand Bayonne district. Here lie the Gothic-style Bayonne Cathedral, with its 13th-century cloister, and Château Vieux castle. Across the Nive river in the Petit Bayonne district is the Musée Basque, a museum devoted to the region’s arts, crafts and traditions.
Area: 21.68 km²
Weather: 13°C, Wind SW at 11 mph (18 km/h), 92% Humidity

Stretching along the banks of the Rivers Adour and Nive, the waterside city of Bayonne is one of the prettiest in southwest France, and the capital of the French Basque Country. It's been a strategic stronghold since medieval times, and the old ramparts are still visible around the outskirts of the old town, but it's Bayonne's pretty half-timbered buildings, riverside restaurants and shady cobbled streets that make it worthy of exploration.
Bayonne is six kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean, close to the eastern Pyrenees and just north of Biarritz. Indeed the three towns of Biarritz, Bayonne and Anglet almost merge into each other. France This Way comment: although it is not the best known destination in the region, Bayonne is a lovely city. Arriving from the north you cross over the river Adour and then straight away you cross over the river Nive. I always think towns are attractive when a river runs through them, but two rivers – double the pleasure. The town centre in Bayonne is also now classed as one of the protected French Historic Towns.
The main thing to do in Bayonne is just to walk around through the old town’s narrow streets and soak up the atmosphere. The shops are interesting and there is an abundance of nice looking restaurants, bars and cafes. The river frontage, the old town and the cathedral are the principal highlights of a visit.
The rivers divide the town into discrete sections. The River Nive separates Grand Bayonne from Petit Bayonne and the River Adour separates Petit Bayonne from Saint Bayonne and these are linked by the Pont St Esprit. The river Nive is a narrow river as it travels through Bayonne and a total of five bridges link Grand and Petit Bayonne. All along the river there are lovely half timbered town houses, many of them now home to shops, cafes and bars.
Basque villages and towns are often very pretty with their white houses and shutters painted in deep red or dark green - Bayonne is also a Basque town and the tall town houses with their shutters and exposed timbers painted in these typical red and green Basque colours are very attractive. The main historical sights are in Grand Bayonne. The gothic Cathedral of Sainte Marie, built on the site of a roman cathedral lost in a fire, was largely built in the 13th century but later additions were added up until the 19th century. It is a very ornate building though a lot of the detail has been lost to the elements. Behind the cathedral is a gothic cloister built in the 18th century.
Nearby is the Chateau Vieux, where the governors of the city, including the Black Prince, were once based. This is now the property of the army and cannot be visited. Don’t miss a stroll through the Botanic Gardens with more than 1000 species and a distinctly Japanese theme. These gardens are part of the reason for Bayonne holding the prestigious 4 flowers category of the ville et village fleurie competition, in recognition of the planting that has been carried out in the town.
In this part of Bayonne you can also see remnants of the ramparts of the town. These date from three different eras: Roman ramparts, ramparts from the time of Francois I (16th century) and ramparts designed by the famous Vauban (17th century) who designed many of the defences of French towns during his lifetime. Some of the streets near the cathedral such as Rue d’Espagne, which leads to the Port d’Espagne, are hung with bunting adding to the lively atmosphere of this part of town.
Cross over the river Nive to visit the Musée Basque. This is the biggest museum of Basque life and houses 2000 items and works of art commemorating Basque life. Also in this part of Bayonne is the Musee Bonnat which houses a large collection of paintings by Leon Bonnat as well as paintings by Rubens, le Greco, Goya and Degas. Also in this quarter of Bayonne is the Eglise Saint Esprit, once an important stage on the Pilgrimage to Saint Jacques de Compostella.

The communes of Bayonne, Biarritz, and Anglet have joined into an intercommunal entity called the Agglomération Côte Basque-Adour (formerly Communauté d'agglomération de Bayonne-Anglet-Biarritz (BAB) prior to 2010).
Bayonne was, in 2014, a commune with over 45,000 inhabitants, the heart of the urban area of Bayonne and of the Agglomeration Côte Basque-Adour which includes Anglet and Biarritz. It is an important part of the Basque Bayonne-San Sebastián Eurocity and it plays the role of economic capital of the Adour basin. Modern industry—metallurgy and chemicals—are established to take advantage of procurement opportunities and sea shipments through the harbour. It is now mostly business services which today represent the largest source of employment. Bayonne is also a cultural capital, a city with strong Basque and Gascon influences and a rich historical past. Its heritage lies in its architecture, the diversity of collections in museums, its gastronomic specialties, and traditional events such as the famous Fêtes de Bayonne.
The inhabitants of the commune are known as Bayonnais or Bayonnaises.
The Nive divides Bayonne into Grand Bayonne and Petit Bayonne with five bridges between the two, both quarters still being backed by Vauban's walls. The houses lining the Nive are examples of Basque architecture, with half-timbering and shutters in the national colours of red and green. The much wider Adour is to the north. The Pont Saint-Esprit connects Petit Bayonne with the Quartier Saint-Esprit across the Adour, where the massive Citadelle and the railway station are located. Grand Bayonne is the commercial and civic hub, with small pedestrianised streets packed with shops, plus the cathedral and Hôtel de Ville. The Cathédrale Sainte-Marie is an imposing, elegant Gothic building, rising over the houses, glimpsed along the narrow streets. It was constructed in the 12th and 13th centuries. The south tower was completed in the 16th century but the cathedral was only completed in the 19th century with the north tower. The cathedral is noted for its charming cloisters. There are other details and sculptures of note, although much was destroyed in the Revolution. Nearby is the Château Vieux, some of which dates back to the 12th century, where the governors of the city were based, including the English Black Prince. The Musée Basque is the finest ethnographic museum of the entire Basque Country. It opened in 1922 but has been closed for a decade recently for refurbishment. It now has special exhibitions on Basque agriculture, seafaring and pelota, handicrafts and Basque history and way of life. The Musée Bonnat began with a large collection bequeathed by the local-born painter Léon Bonnat. The museum is one of the best galleries in south west France and has paintings by Edgar Degas, El Greco, Sandro Botticelli, and Francisco Goya, among others. At the back of Petit Bayonne is the Château Neuf, among the ramparts. Now an exhibition space, it was started by the newly arrived French in 1460 to control the city. The walls nearby have been opened to visitors. They are important for plant life now and Bayonne's botanic gardens adjoin the walls on both sides of the Nive. The area across the Adour is largely residential and industrial, with much demolished to make way for the railway. The Saint-Esprit church was part of a bigger complex built by Louis XI to care for pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela. It is home to a wooden Flight into Egypt sculpture. Overlooking the quarter is Vauban's 1680 Citadelle. The soldiers of Wellington's army who died besieging the citadelle in 1813 are buried in the nearby English Cemetery, visited by Queen Victoria and other British dignitaries when staying in Biarritz.
