HOT NEWS Tourist Attractions In Basse Terre Guadeloupe
Basse Terre Guadeloupe. Basse-Terre, on Basse-Terre Island, is the administrative capital of Guadeloupe, an overseas region of France located in the Lesser Antilles, Eastern Caribbean. It is filled with various historical landmarks and forts that date back to 1643, as well as several colonial buildings and monuments all around the city. It is connected to Grande-Terre by the Point de la Gabare Bridge that is built over Riviere Salee. Known for its many delightful beaches such as Malendure beach, the Centre Nautique de Basse-Terre and Marina de Rivière Sens, all offer great opportunities for a range of water activities.
Be sure to take a drive through the Parc National de la Guadeloupe - at the heart of Basse-Terre - through the fern-covered hillsides and orchid-filled rainforests. Be sure also to call in at the Maison de la Foret, with its various displays on the forest. Also take the Route de la Traversee through a thicket of bamboos, huge gum and mahogany trees, ginger and heliconia. Visitors can also visit the jungle waterfall in the middle of the park called Cascade aux Ecrevisses. At the west end of the park is a zoo with a swing bridge.
The various other places worth visiting in Basse-Terre include: the fort Delgrès, a magnificent historical fort where the entrance is free; the Cathedral of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul, a 19th century building which has a notable grey stone highlighted by white statues; many other colonial buildings; La place du Champ d'Arbaud, the main square; Le Jardin Pichon; and the Zoological and Botanical Park that lies on a 460 m hilltop garden on the banks of La Rivière-aux-Herbes that is a reserve for the plants and animals of Guadeloupe.

More information about the video content bellow:
1. Guadeloupe is an insular region of France located in the Leeward Islands, part of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean. Administratively, it is an overseas region consisting of a single overseas department. With a land area of 1,628 square kilometres and an estimated population of 400,132 as of January 2015, it is the largest and most populous European Union territory in North America. Guadeloupe, like the other overseas departments, is an integral part of France. As a constituent territory of the European Union and the Eurozone, the euro is its official currency and any European Union citizen is free to settle and work there indefinitely. As an overseas department, however, it is not part of the Schengen Area.
2. Christopher Columbus came across the islands in 1493, and named them after a Spanish monastery, but the Carib indians who lived there resisted Spanish attempts to settle the islands. French colonists arrived in the 17th century though, and it became a French colony in 1635. There were several British occupations of Guadeloupe in the 18th and early 19th centuries, and a short period of Swedish rule, before it was restored to France. It became an official French department in 1946, and since the 1980s is a region of France.
3. Basse-Terre is a French commune in the Guadaloupe department of France in the Lesser Antilles. It is also the prefecture (capital city) of Guadeloupe. Although it is the administrative capital, Basse-Terre is only the second largest city in Guadeloupe behind Pointe-à-Pitre.
4. The islands have lovely white sand beaches, a rainforest that is brimming with wildlife, and, if that weren’t enough, the highest waterfall in the Caribbean! Each year, there are 400,000 people visit Guadeloupe to enjoy the wonderful scenery.
5. There is an active volcano in Guadeloupe called La Soufrière, located in the South of Basse-Terre. It is one of the nine active volcanoes of the Lesser Antilles. Its last eruption was in 1976. This eruption led to the evacuation of the southern part of Basse-Terre. 73,600 people were displaced over a course of three and a half months following the eruption.
6. The 2009 French Caribbean general strikes began in the French overseas region of Guadeloupe on 20 January 2009, and spread to neighbouring Martinique on 5 February 2009. The strikes exposed deep ethnic, racial, and class tensions and disparities within Guadeloupe and Martinique and devastated the tourism industry of both islands during the high season.
7. In 2012 the average population density in Guadeloupe was 247.7 inhabitants for every square kilometre, which is very high in comparison to the whole France's 116.5 inhabitants for every square kilometre. One third of the land is devoted to agriculture and all mountains are uninhabitable. This lack of space and shelter makes the population density even higher. Because Guadeloupe is a wealthy country in comparison to the surrounding Caribbean islands, immigration is popular. People immigrate to Guadeloupe because of its stronger political stability and greater agricultural job opportunities.
