The history section:
The Portuguese first reached the west coast of India when the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama landed at Calicut in 1498. For several years after their arrival in India, they had been consolidating their power in north Konkan. They had established a strong foothold in Goa, which they captured from the Sultan of Bijapur in 1510. According to Historian Faria y Souza, the coast of Bassein was first visited by the Portuguese in 1509, when Francisco de Almeida on his way to Diu captured a Muslim ship in the harbour of Bombay, with 24 citizens of Gujarat aboard. At the time, the cession of Mumbai (or Bombay) was of minor importance - but retroactively it gained a crucial importance when the place passed from the Portuguese to the English in 1661 as part of the dowry of Catherine of Braganza, and became a major trade center - making this the treaty's most important long-range result.
The fort and the village are accessible most easily through the [Vasai Road Railway Station], which itself is in Manikpur-Navghar, a part of the newly raised City of Vasai-Virar (See Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation), and lies to the immediate north of the cities of Mumbai and Mira Road-Bhayander. The Vasai Road Railway Station is on the Western Railway line (formerly the Mumbai, Baroda & Central India Railways) in the direction of Virar Railway Station.
How to reach Vasai Fort:
1. Board a Virar bound local train (preferably a fast local) from Churchgate station.
2. Get down at Vasai road. The platform is usually on the right side. Exit the station towards Vasai west.
3. Board bus number 105 to 'Killa Bunder' from the bus stand which is less than 100 meters from the station.

Vasai Fort, also known as the Bassein Fort, is an ancient fort located at Vasai in the suburbs of North Mumbai. The fort, overlooks the confluence of the Ulhas River, is one of the top places to visit in Mumbai.
Vasai was known as a place for ship building in the 15th Century. Bahadur Shah, a Mughal Emperor had built the Bassein Fort in the 1530s. The fort covers an area of around 110 acre. The Portuguese conquered and destroyed most of the fort a year after it was built. The Portuguese remodeled the fort into a flourishing city by building a citadel inside. The fort was under the Portuguese control till 1739 AD. In the 18th century, the fort was raided and overtaken by the Maratha army under Chimaji Appa. They stood strong for 3 long years, and then the British took over the fort in the First Anglo-Maratha War.
Once a strategic place on the Western coast of India, this fort has now mostly turned into ruins. Despite the fort is so old and in the condition of ageing, there are many remains, which are still livens the wonderful architecture of the olden days. Three chapels inside the fort are in the condition, which can be easily recognized. The southernmost chapel has a well-preserved barrel vaulted ceiling and the walls are covered with tree roots and palm groves. Many of the watchtowers still stand so strong, with secure staircases. Surrounded by sea on the three sides, it is a favourite location of Bollywood film makers. The famous films shot here are Khamoshi, Ram Gopal Verma's Aag etc.
Tourists can reach this place by taking a train up to Vasai Road Station. From here tourists can take a bus or auto to the fort. It is said that the fort has a bad reputation for illegal activities and that during the week days it is not advisable for tourists or women to visit it.
Timings: 10 AM to 5 PM.

Bassein Fort-Vasai,Mumbai
The military history of Bassein encompasses the period from 1526, when the Portuguese established their first factory at Bassein, until 1818, when Bassein lost its strategic importance following the defeat of the Marathas by the British.
Bassein (renamed to Vasai after Indian independence), is a small coastal town north of Mumbai (formerly Bombay). It was historically known to the Portuguese as Baçaim. Medieval Bassein had a great strategic value for the Portuguese in maintaining their command of the Arabian Sea. It had utmost strategic value for the British East India Company for protecting the northern flank of Bombay. Its fort had a massive military presence. Bassein was a maritime hub with extensive shipping and ship building activities, and brought Christian culture to the Bombay area, next in importance only to Goa.This documentary is by Blue Jack.
