Welcome to our Centre! | Lake District Calvert Trust
This is the Lake District Calvert Trust's centre. It is located near Keswick, with a beautiful view to Bassenthwaite Lake and the mountains Barf and Broom Fell. It's a nice place to work at or have a stay, because the view of the landscape looks different every morning.
When you as a visitor arrive here, you should first say hello to our friendly staff at the reception. They will welcome you and provide you with all the information you need to know.
The centre has once been a farm, so our accessible facilities are named after their former purpose. You can stay in the upper byre, lower byre or in our farmhouse.

Lake District
The Lake District, also commonly known as The Lakes or (particularly as an adjective) Lakeland, is a mountainous region in North West England. A popular holiday destination, it is famous not only for its lakes, forests and mountains (or fells), but also for its associations with the early 19th century poetry and writings of William Wordsworth and the other Lake Poets.
Historically shared by the counties of Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire, the Lake District now lies entirely within the modern county of Cumbria. All the land in England higher than three thousand feet above sea level lies within the National Park, including Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England. It also contains the deepest and longest lakes in England, Wastwater and Windermere, respectively.

Our Accessible Rooms | Lake District Calvert Trust
We will do our best to give you the rooms which are best suitable for your needs and requirements.
We can take up to 60 residents at any one time with us able to cater for profound and complex disabilities. Our rooms are mainly twins, with some larger rooms available on request or for use by larger groups,
We take safeguarding issues very seriously, so our accommodation is over 3 separate areas, the Farmhouse, the Lower Byre and the Upper Byre, with each of these split down into 2 lockable corridors. This enables larger groups to have their own areas of accommodation areas not used by other residents.
Our bedrooms are all en-suite with level entry wet-room and toilet facilities. A number of the bedrooms also feature electric raisable beds which can be allocated if required. In rooms we can also place portable electric hoists, free-standing shower-chairs and medical fridges, with our intention being that with the exception of wheelchairs*, you don’t need to bring any specialist equipment.
(*we do not have oxygen or airflow mattresses on site, which you would need to book in advance with an outside supplier)

Restoration Techniques used in the Cumbrian Bogs LIFE+ Project
Cumbrian Bogs LIFE was a 5 year bog restoration project, funded through the EU LIFE programme and managed by Natural England. It focused on the restoration of three lowland raised bogs in Cumbria: Roudsea Wood and Mosses, Wedholme Flow and Bolton Fell Moss. Working closely with specialist contractors and using their experience and expertise meant that innovative techniques were developed through the course of the project. The methods used in the project have put the right conditions in place to allow restoration to take place – it could be another 30 years before the bogs become fully functional again. This film highlights the main techniques used across the three sites.

Keswick Railway Station, Keswick, Cumbria, The Lake District, England
This is the former Keswick Railway Station, situated on the outskirts of Keswick in The Lake District.
Only one of the two original platforms remains, and it backs onto The Keswick Hotel, near Fitz Park, just on the outskirts of the Town of Keswick
Keswick Station formed part of The Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith Railway Line in Cumbria, which was previously known as Cumberland and Westmoreland.
The Station opened on 2nd January 1865, it was closed to Goods on 1st June 1964, all Westwards traffic ceased on 18th April 1966. The Station was unstaffed from 1st July 1968 until it was finally closed to passengers on 6th March 1972.
Part of the route of the old railway line has now been made into an excellent walking and cycling path called The Keswick Railway Footpath, and is approximately 4 miles in length, crossing the River Greta over several of the original railway bridges, and through a short tunnel, as it follows the beautiful Greta Gorge until the path ends at the A66 near Threlkeld Village.
This route forms part of the Sustrans National Cycle Network.
