Sights and sounds from Bastille Day in Paris, France
President Emmanuel Macron reviewed the traditional Bastille Day military parade on Sunday, alongside other European leaders.
Paris’s Champs Elysees was reopened to traffic as soon as the parade finished, but a few hundred protesters from the grassroots ‘yellow vests’ movement tried to occupy it.
Macron and his guests had already left for the Elysees presidential palace for lunch.
The parade was followed by a spectacular fireworks display from Paris' iconic Eiffel Tower.

It's not often that we're back home in Canada to celebrate Canada Day; however, one of the benefits of travel is that sometimes we get opportunities to take part in National Day celebrations of other countries. While visiting Paris, France to shoot a city guide, we had such a chance. The French National Day commemorates the Storming of the Bastille that took place on 14 July 1789. In English this day is called Bastille Day; however, in France it is known as La Fête nationale and/or Le quatorze juillet. To take part in the events of the day we went to the military parade, watched the impressive Eiffel Tower fireworks from the comfort of our hotel room on the 8th floor and went to party at a Fireman's Ball. Out of the three things I've mentioned we had the chance to cover two of them. Come find out what we did and didn't do on Bastille Day in Paris, France.

Well good morning from Paris. Today is the fourteenth of July which is a major national holiday. Today actually commemorates the storming of the Bastille and the start of the French Revolution. So there is a lot to celebrate. We're going to go watch a military parade and then there is going to be fireworks over the Eiffel Tower. And maybe we may be attending a Fireman's Ball. So let's get started with the day.
So they were handing out French flags just outside the metro station. So we're all patriotic and ready to celebrate.
We definitely could have come a little bit earlier. Some people came really prepared. Check this out they've got step ladders. Oh, yeah.
So the metro is free today and it looks packed.
So what are we doing next? Well, we're heading over to the fireman's ball. We just finished watching the fireworks from the comfort of our apartment. It was awesome. We're on the eighth floor of our hotel and we just had such a nice view right out of our window. We didn't even have to go to the Eiffel Tower. We could sit here, relax and just watch it outside of our window.
Okay, so let's go find that party now.
Yes.
So we are going in search of the fireman's ball. Apparently there is one taking place in our neighborhood just two streets away. So we're going to try to find it and see what it is like.
So the whole idea of these fireman's balls in these different fire stations is to raise a lot of money for the fire station throughout the year. There is a lot of dancing, there is drinking, there is games, there is food. So we're pretty excited about it.
So this is actually quite disappointing. Google has failed me. We looked at the address of fire stations that are supposedly having parties and here we are with a fire station right behind us. And there is no party tonight. There is just a fire truck pulling back into the station because they are working. Well 2 out of 3 isn't bad? Yeah, so no party tonight guys. I guess we're heading back to the hotel. And that is the end of Bastille Day.

My Experience with the Bastille Day Parade in Paris
Well, I was all jazzed to get to the Bastille Day Parade early and find a great viewing spot. I got there way too early and realized I had to stand there for three hours before the parade started without coffee or a pastry. I stood there for about 10 minutes and realized...this was going to be boring, not the parade itself...but the standing and waiting.
So I left to get a cup of coffee at a small coffee shop around the corner from the parade. And then decided there must be a better way to spend the three hours. So I left Champs Elysee and looked for other vantage spots...there were none. So...after many years of anticipation of seeing this parade...I opted out. I went to the bridge across from the Concourse and watched the VIP section from a distance. My parade experience was a big nothing burger. C'est la Vie.

Colorful fireworks lit up the Eiffel Tower in Paris as France celebrated Bastille Day on July 14. This year, the theme was love. Meanwhile, a special message was sent out to the French football team, who will be playing Croatia in the World Cup final. Bastille Day marks the storming of the Bastille prison by angry Paris crowds on July 14, 1789, a key kick-off point for the French revolution.

Bastille Day Celebrations and Bastille Day Firemen's Ball, Paris.
The Bastille Day in Paris offers plenty of options for immersing yourself in French history and traditions. On July 14, Paris celebrates the start of the French Revolution with Bastille Day celebrations. The festivities feature a wide range of activities, from parades to other celebrations.
This year's fete down the Champs Élysées was decidedly more American than in years past, with president Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump in attendance, and a contingent of U.S. troops marching down the parade route. Marking the start of the French Revolution in 1789 and the United States' involvement in World War I a century ago, President Donald Trump joined French leader Emmanuel Macron for Paris' annual Bastille Day parade on Friday. Macron, in a speech near the end of the event, thanked the U.S. for intervening in World War I and said the fact that Trump was at his side is the sign of a friendship across the ages. And that is why I wish to thank them, thank the United States for the choice it made 100 years ago, he said.
After the parade in Paris, Mr Macron will go to Nice for the one-year anniversary of the terror attack which killed 86 people.
The French adore their pompiers (firemen) and for good reason. Each year, on July 13 and 14, from 9 pm to 4 am, the fire stations of Paris welcome visitors in an open house celebration. There's dancing, drinking and plenty of activities. It's a very popular event with sometimes long lines.

French July 14th 2016 Military Parade (Bastille Military Parade)
The Bastille Day Military Parade (or 14 July Military Parade, translation of the French name of Défilé militaire du 14 Juillet) is a French military parade that has been held on the morning of 14 July each year in Paris since 1880, almost without exception.
The parade passes down the Champs-Elysées from l'Arc de Triomphe to Place de la Concorde where the President of the French Republic, his government and foreign ambassadors to France stand. This is a popular event in France, broadcast on French TV, and is one of the oldest regular military parades in the world. In some years, invited detachments of foreign troops take part in the parade and foreign statesmen attend as guests.
Smaller military parades are held in French garrison towns (such as Toulon, Brest or Belfort) with local troops.

German soldiers rolled down Paris' Champs Elysees avenue for the
first time since World War Two on Thursday (14/7), as part of
France's annual Bastille Day celebration. The troops drove down
the broad flag-lined avenue in Marder and Fuchs armoured fighting
vehicles marked with Germany's distinctive black and white
military cross and the blue crest, sword and gold stars of the
European Army Corps, Europe's nascent force due to become
operational in October 1995. Only about 200 Germans, most from
the 294th Panzergrenadier Battalion, were among more than 7,000
participants in the annual military parade. But their presence
fuelled an emotional debate that overshadowed other aspects of the
national holiday.

Bastille Day is France's national holiday and I'm glad I was able to attend it this year to celebrate it together with the French in Paris! ▾ // See more details below // ▾
Come 2017, I absolutely recommend attending this festive affair!
NOTE: My heart goes out to Nice for the terrible event that happened this year during this celebration. Now, if you're going to ask me if it's still safe to travel to France or to Europe in general, my answer will still be a resounding YES. It's natural to get scared of course, but don't freak out. Don't let the terrorists win and stop you from living your life and from fulfilling your desires.
The risks are still low so just travel smart, stay street smart, be kind, and you'll be fine. After all, the world's beauty is something that you shouldn't miss, so go and book that ticket!
