NZ Day 4 Bastion Point & Mission Bay
Bastion Point and Mission Bay Beach walkabout
Bastion Point - 20140427
Beautiful day again, little wind meant for lots of flying time.
Michael Joseph Savage Memorial, Auckland, New Zealand
Located at Auckland's Bastion Point, the memorial to Michael Joseph Savage, New Zealand's first Labour prime minister (1935-1940) overlooks the Waitemata Harbour. Like the Massey Memorial in Wellington, it is built on the site of a former gun emplacement dating from the 'Russian Scare' of the 1880s.
Mission Bay is a waterfront haven for all Aucklanders. Built around the idyllic, pohutukawa-lined beach and separated from the central city by a brief and beautiful drive, it’s no wonder that Mission Bay is celebrated destination for locals and visitors alike. No matter what the weather, Mission Bay welcomes everyone with open arms and a variety of experiences. Enjoy the parks, get active (by land and by sea) or simply relax and explore the surrounds. From the iconic fountain to dining with views of Rangitoto and the Waitemata Harbour, it truly is the bustling, vibrant heart of Auckland’s Eastern Bays.

Bastion Point - 20140426
Had another go on Bastion Point. It was a bit windy but we had a few more devices in the air which made for some nice footage.
First look at Bastion Point's newly excavated tunnels
The tunnels at Auckland's Bastion Point, the resting place of the country's first Labour Prime Minister Michael Joseph Savage, were opened to the media for the first time today since they were excavated 13 years ago.
Bastion Point
Bastion Point like all of the other places visited today offered views that stretched out to the iconic Rangitoto Island.
Bastion Point is soaked with history... but bottom line is that for tourists and coutry folk alike... it's a great place to bring the family to have a bbq, fly the kite out the back, or sit down and relax to catch up on some zzz's on a sunny day.
With bustling beach, cafe's and restaurant's below, it is a spot not to be overlooked when coming to Auckland.

Mission Bay
Mission Bay is situated in Auckland city on New Zealand's North Island, its a waterfront haven just a short drive outside the central city.
Mission Bay is a vibrant bustling little place and offers many things for you to see and do! A great place to get a ice cream and enjoy the view. Here you can take a stroll, jog or hire a bike and enjoy the fully paved shared path stretching 10km from St Helliers to Britomart in the city center. This path takes you past the iconic historical fountain, Kelly Tarlton's which is one of Auckland's top attractions, the Michael Joseph Savage Memorial park, play parks for the kids and plenty of restaurants, and all of this with a great view of Rangitoto.
Mission Bay takes its name from the Melanesian Mission established by the Anglican Bishop George Augustus Selwyn, this building, also known as the mission house once formed part of a larger complex of buildings, constructed of basalt from the nearby Rangitoto Island, it formed part of a naval training school, then an industrial school, and later restored as a museum and is now currently leased out as a restaurant.
The wharf close to Kelly Tarlton's offers some good fishing and great views over the city, and during the summer months a great place to cool off.
The Trevor Davis Memorial Fountain is one of the area's landmarks, it has been a source of beauty and interest since the 1950's, also a source of fun like this day when someone thought it was a good idea to put red cordial in the water, colouring the water red... The Orakei Local Board recently restored the fountain and now its even prettier at night.
The Michael Joseph Savage Memorial park is located at Auckland's Bastion Point, offering exceptional views over the city and Waitemata harbour. A great place for a family picnic. The memorial to Michael Joseph Savage, New Zealand's first Labour prime minister is built on the site of a former gun emplacement of the 1880s. The memorial was officially opened in March 1943, its an award winning piece of architecture surrounded by magnificent flower beds.

So here is my second edit from my drone. learned a couple more lessons on shooting with the drone. As you can probably tell my gimbal was on a tilt for some of this footage. So i found out how to correct that automatically through using the remote control. The Dji Mavic Pro is by far the most versatile drone i have ever used! It is a must for anyone wanting to add to their drone catalogue or just something to start of with.

Scene footage of police stabbing at Bastion Point
A colleague of the Auckland constable stabbed in the face this morning has praised his commitment to his work.
Todd Martin, who is responsible for the Mission Bay and St Heliers community constable offices, was having surgery at Auckland City Hospital this afternoon after being attacked with a long-bladed knife while responding to reports of a man being threatening and abusive.
Mission Bay police station volunteer Sam Gibson said Mr Martin is a very good officer who has worked in the area for several years.
He really understands the job and has a good rapport with the local community.
Mr Gibson was shocked when another volunteer phoned him this morning with the news.
It's something you don't expect to happen, but it's always a possibility.
Mr Martin is stationed at Newmarket and has been in the police for nine years.
He was stabbed while talking to a man on Hapimana Rd, which leads from Tamaki Drive to the MJ Savage Memorial Park overlooking the Hauraki Gulf about 10.20am.
He was with two other officers. All were wearing stab-proof vests.
Acting Auckland commander, Inspector Jim Wilson said Mr Martin was taken completely by surprise.
Without any warning whatsoever the suspect then drew a knife and stabbed him in the face, Mr Wilson said.
At that stage there was no indication he would become violent, he certainly wasn't aggressive at that stage and it would appear that he took the officer completely by surprise.
Mr Wilson said the suspect then turned his attention to the other officers, one of whom was armed with a Taser.
They backed off, and it was at that stage then he turned and ran off across the park into some bushes.
Another officer at a cordon on Patteson Rd saw the suspect riding a bicycle 25 minutes later.
He thought that [he] was likely to escape so he called upon the [man] to surrender. [He] was clearly intent on leaving the area so the officer pushed him off his bicycle before Tasering him.
Mr Wilson said there was a real fear that someone else could be harmed.
This is about as serious as it can possibly get, when an officer is actually stabbed, he said.
As well as the knife, the alleged offender was carrying tools in a bag which could have been used as a weapon, including a hammer, police said.
Mr Wilson said the incident did not indicate a need for police to carry firearms on routine duties.
There was no time to deploy the Taser so there wouldn't have been any time to deploy the firearm at that stage.
However, Police Association president Greg O'Connor said the stabbing highlighted the risks faced by every police officer, even while carrying out routine tasks, and they should be armed.
That means a Taser, and unfortunately we've reached a stage when it also means a firearm.
A 38-year-old man will appear in Auckland District Court tomorrow facing three charges of assault with a weapon and one of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
