A LITTLE HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Did you know your elementary school history teacher was a liar? Thanks for nothing, Mr. Henderson! We all learned that President Taft was so enormous, he once got stuck in the White House tub. Did you know that wasn't true? And do you know anything else about Taft? You better believe you don't! Mr. Henderson was too busy sneaking nips of whiskey in between classes to question your recently discredited textbook.
Much like the validity of Manifest Destiny and the celebration of slaver and murderer Christopher Columbus, history class got this big and tall tale a LITTLE bit wrong. While Taft was only 5'11, he weighed around three hundred and forty pounds. Ho boy! That's almost TWO Obamas! Because of Taft's massive size and his fondness for baths, he SPECIFICALLY had an extra-large bathtub installed in the White House just to accommodate his bulk. Here's a picture of the four men who installed the tub sitting inside of it!
Have you ever seen such a tub?! It was custom built specifically so Taft could bubble bathe in peace. More than seven feet long and forty-one inches wide, this battleship of a tub weighed a full ton. It could more than accommodate Taft's titanic proportions. In fact, a more conventionally sized man could float in it, like the Dead Sea. And as YOU can see, it was a big, beefy tub for a big, beefy man.
Although the Taft tub legend may not be true, during a hotel stay in Cape May, New Jersey, Taft DID still run into some good old fashioned tub trouble (tubble, if you will. I know *I* will!) According to the June 15th, 1915 edition of the New York Tribune, your ol' boy Taft failed to estimate even approximately the size of the average seaside hotel bathtub, and when he stepped into it the water overflowed and trickled down upon the heads of the guests in the dining room. Hot dang! That's a really big president and a really mean newspaper!
Even stranger, Teddy Backstabber Roosevelt and Taft were best buds before this election. Roosevelt served as President for almost two full terms and actually groomed Taft to be his replacement. After Taft got elected, Roosevelt dusted off his Rough Rider hat and went on safari in Africa, because that's what you do when you're a super-cool ex-President But after a couple years, Roosevelt felt Taft was taking the Republican party too far from its progressive roots (it was a different time, folks), and Teddy returned to the U.S. to actively campaign for President against his pie-loving friend. Teddy was so successful and caused such discord that they split the party vote in the primaries. Teddy ended up losing the primary and he was angry enough that he formed his own pary, the Progressive Bull Moose Party (now THAT'S a party animal you DON'T want to mess with!). Roosevelt was one of the most successful third party candidates of all time, pulling 27% of the vote, defeating Taft's 23%, despite Taft running on a major ticket (and we DO mean major; hey-o!). This split the Republican vote, and in the end, they both got demolished by Woodrow Wilson, with the final electoral numbers tallying:
Wilson: 435 votes
Roosevelt: 88 votes
Taft: 8 votes
Teddy! Dang, dog, you did Taft dirty! (And a major shout out to our boy Eugene V. Debs, America's leading Socialist candidate, who polled at a barn-busting 6% nationally.)
So you think this election has been bonkers? Just look at all those last few paragraphs you just read. And I didn't even mention that teddy bears are named after Teddy Roosevelt! What?! Are you kidding me?!
We'll see you next time, folks!
