Bathurst Corvettes.dv
In this film we commemorate the ships that formed the backbone of the Royal Australian Navy in World War 2. Designed to be built quickly and in large numbers, these ships served in most of the main naval theatres of war and were indispensable in the initial stages of the war. A total of 60 were eventually built, and one is still afloat.
In January 1942 the Japanese submarine I-124 was sunk outside Darwin by HMAS Deloraine (see painting in the video), the first major submarine kill by the RAN.
The only ship of the class lost to enemy action in the war was HMAS Armidale. In this action, the bravery of one Australian naval rating, Ordinary Seaman Teddy Sheean, who kept firing at the attacking Japanese aircraft until the ship sank with him aboard has resonated to this day. The RAN has named a Collins class submarine in his honor.
This film was shot in Melbourne, Whyalla and Darwin. We are indebted to the staff at the excellent museums in all 3 places for their invaluable assistance, especially the staff at HMAS Whyalla. HMAS Whyalla can be visited by anybody visiting this South Australian coastal town, and is a striking and worthy sight on the road when entering from the North. HMAS Castlemaine is the last of this class afloat and is at Gem Dock, Williamstown, a suburb of Melbourne in Victoria. The ship is a wonderful floating museum and well worth visiting.

Kings Parade Bathurst NSW Australia, filmed by Sky Eye UAV Solutions
Kings Parade, with its Carillon, Evans and Boer War Memorial monuments, forms an important focal point for the city.
The Carillon was built in 1933 as a memorial to the men and women of Bathurst and District who served in World War 1. It has 35 bells and, while it can still be played manually, it is connected to a computer and is programmed to play 40 different tunes. It plays every day at noon and 1.00pm.
King's Parade, bounded by William, George, Church and Russell Streets, is a focal point for many of the community events conducted within Bathurst.

Bathurst Courthouse & Carillon filmed by Sky Eye UAV Solutions
Just a great afternoon for filming and flying.
The Bathurst Courthouse (circa 1880) faces Russell Street and is Neo-Classical with an octagonal Renaissance dome. It was designed by colonial architect James Barnet and is superbly situated in the heart of the city.
Bathurst's most distinguished public building, it is regarded by the National Trust as 'one of Australia's finest examples of Victorian public architecture'.
The entire structure is 81 metres long and 45 metres wide.
Opened in 1877 the wings were originally the postal and telegraph offices but nowadays the west wing is occupied by the Central Western Music Centre and the east wing by the Historical Society Museum. Its collection includes Aboriginal artifacts..
The Carillon, with 35 bells, was constructed in 1933 as a memorial to the men of Bathurst and District who served in World War One. Doors commemorating both World Wars provide entry to an interior featuring an eternal flame of remembrance. A number of plaques have been added to commemorate sacrifices made by Australian servicemen and servicewomen in subsequent conflicts.}The memorial is located on Kings Parade - parkland bounded by William, George, Church and Russell streets.

HMAS Castlemaine , named for the city of Castlemaine, Victoria, was one of 60 Bathurst-class corvettes constructed during World War II, and one of 36 initially manned and commissioned solely by the Royal Australian Navy .Launched in 1941 and commissioned in 1942, Castlemaine operated during World War II in the waters of Australia, New Guinea, and Timor. She remained in service until 1945, when she was decommissioned into reserve and converted into an immobilised training ship.In 1973, Castlemaine was presented to the Maritime Trust of Australia for conversion of a museum ship.

HMAS Castlemaine
Went down to Williamstown and had a look at the museum ship HMAS Castlemaine,
A Bathurst class Corvette that was laid down 17th Feb, 1941 and decommissioned 14th Dec 1945.
Used as a immobilised training hulk until 1973 when it was turned into a museum ship and berthed at Williamstown where it is today.
Tried some fancy editing (for me anyway) in this video.

War Memorial of the 48th Highlanders in Queen's Park, Downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada
48th Highlanders War Monument in Queen's Park, Downtown Toronto, near University of Toronto Campus, Royal Ontario Museum and Ontario Provincial Legislature
Toronto is the biggest city in Canada and the capital of the province of Ontario. The oldest and most densely populated part of the city is Downtown Toronto, which is bordered by Bloor Street in the north, Lake Ontario in the south, Bathurst Street in the west, and the Don River in the east.
Queen's Park is a medium-sized green space in the downtown core, 2 blocks south of Bloor Street. It is close to the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), and the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art. The park is shaded by big trees and has a few statues and fountains in it. Queen's Park is almost completely surrounded by the St. George Campus of the University of Toronto- the city's oldest post-secondary institution. The park was opened in 1860 by Edward, Prince of Wales, and was named in honour of Queen Victoria.
Queen's Park is part of larger oval-shaped green space surrounded by a road called Queen's Park Crescent. The park proper occupies the top half of the oval. Wellesley Street, which splits the oval in half, secparates Queen's Park proper from the grounds of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, which occupies the southern half of the oval-shaped area. This is the headquarters of the provincial government of Ontario. I don't think the legislative grounds are technically part of Queen's Park, but the Ontario government building is still often referred to as Queen's Park. So that when people talk about the Ontario legislature, they often talk about Queen's Park.
The monument in this video is at the north end of the park. It's dedicated to the 48th Highlanders, a Toronto-based Canadian infantry regiment. The regiment was formed in 1891 and since then participated in many of Britain and Canada's military conflicts. As its name suggests, the Canadian Highlander regiment is tied to the Highlander regiments of Scotland. The Highlanders fought in the South African War (aka. Boer War) in South Africa (1899-1902). The also saw action in WWI, WWII, and Afghanistan.
You can see the names of various locations where the 48th Highlanders fought inscribed on the sides of the monument- i.e. Afghanistan, South Africa, Sicily, Vimy, Amiens, Somme, Arras, and so on.

Sopwith Pup pilot at Canadian Museum of Flight, Langley, British Columbia
Retired RCAF fighter pilot and Air Canada captain, Al French, speaking from the cockpit of a Sopwith Pup replica at the Canadian Museum of Flight, Langley Municipal Airport, British Columbia. In the final analysis, the newly built replica Pups had insufficient hours to fly at The Battle of Vimy Ridge Commemoration on April 9, 2017, but were on site at Vimy, France, to tell the following tale. By nightfall on April 12, 1917 the corps was in firm control of the Ridge. The Corps suffered 10,602 casualties: 3,598 killed and 7,004 wounded. The Sopwith Pup replicas are back in Langley, BC. 'Vimy Flight' WW1 Aircraft over Notre Dame de Lorette, France
100 years ago, Canadian pilots flew reconnaissance missions over the Vimy region, gathering vital intelligence for the Battle of Vimy Ridge - which would be a defining moment for the young nation of Canada. Today, we pay tribute to our heroes with a flypast of replica WW1 fighter aircraft.
This video was taken over the French cemetery at Notre Dame de Lorette - the largest military cemetary in France. Over 43,000 French soldiers are laid to rest at this site alone.
