Indonesian Batik
UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2009
URL:
Description: The techniques, symbolism and culture surrounding hand-dyed cotton and silk garments known as Indonesian Batik permeate the lives of Indonesians from beginning to end: infants are carried in batik slings decorated with symbols designed to bring the child luck, and the dead are shrouded in funerary batik. Clothes with everyday designs are worn regularly in business and academic settings, while special varieties are incorporated into celebrations of marriage and pregnancy and into puppet theatre and other art forms. The garments even play the central role in certain rituals, such as the ceremonial casting of royal batik into a volcano. Batik is dyed by proud craftspeople who draw designs on fabric using dots and lines of hot wax, which resists vegetable and other dyes and therefore allows the artisan to colour selectively by soaking the cloth in one colour, removing the wax with boiling water and repeating if multiple colours are desired. The wide diversity of patterns reflects a variety of influences, ranging from Arabic calligraphy, European bouquets and Chinese phoenixes to Japanese cherry blossoms and Indian or Persian peacocks. Often handed down within families for generations, the craft of batik is intertwined with the cultural identity of the Indonesian people and, through the symbolic meanings of its colours and designs, expresses their creativity and spirituality.

Batik (Arts of Indonesia)
Batik is both an art and a craft, which is becoming more popular and well known in the West as a wonderfully creative medium. The art of decorating cloth in this way, using wax and dye, has been practised for centuries. In Java, Indonesia, batik is part of an ancient tradition, and some of the finest batik cloth in the world is still made there. The word batik originates from the Javanese tik and means to dot.

Art Works in Tamansari Village, Yogyakarta
Taman Sari Water Castle is one of famous tourism place in Yogyakarta. It was built in 17s after the Giyanti Treaty and Mangkubumi became the king. It has the royal heritage style of building, awesome crafts in some walls made by the villager, and a village named Taman Sari Village.
Taman Sari Village is very unique, almost all houses in the village are decorated like an art gallery because most of the villager work as an artist. They decorated their house as an art gallery and make batik lukis (batik painting) or kaos lukis (t-shirt painting), silhouette drawing, bird’s cage crafting, painting, boutique and art gallery cafe. They sell their works there to make an income.
In Taman Sari Village, there are many villager who work as an artist and make art works to sell, especially batik painting. Even though now the villager also make other works like silhouette drawing, painting, et cetera, but batik painting still one of the most creative work that produced by the villager. So how this activity happen?
After an earthquake in 18 century that destroyed some parts in water castle building, King of Yogyakarta sent abdhi dalem, called onggo, to manage and took care of it. Then, they were living around Taman sari water castle building and created their own village. The village was located near to one of popular traditional market in the past, named Pasar Ngasem or Ngasem Market.
In 1960s-1970s, Soeharto, the President of Indonesia at that time opened the tourism places in Indonesia for international tourists. Because they most likely to visit an unique, old, and historical place, Taman Sari became one of their destination. This was accepted by the villager because they got a good income from this tourism activities.
One day, one of a young villager got an idea. He tried to make batik with his paintbrush on canvas and t-shirt. Then, he displayed it in his house. Many tourists who were visiting Taman Sari and Pasar Ngasem also passed by Taman Sari Village saw his batik painting and interested on it. They bought it and it turned out that many tourists, especially international tourists, liked the batik painting very much. The young villager got a lot of money with his batik innovation art. Because of this, the other villager started to make a batik painting. From that business, people in the village scooped a lot of money to live their life.
On April 2010, the government relocated Pasar Ngasem Jogja. It made almost half of the tourists started to not visit Taman Sari Village. As a result, the villager could not got income as many as before. Some of them collapsed because of that policy. The situation stressed them to find another job or business. Some of them started to develop batik lukis to kaos lukis, some are trying to be a silhouette painter, a bird’s cage crafter, make their own boutique, or be an entrepreneur of an art gallery café. With their all innovation art works, they can attract more tourists to visit them and buy their art works.

---HISTORY OF BATIK---

Batik in Yogyakarta
I am very sorry for the shaky start. The material was somewhat shaky I must admit, but not that hard. After applying the titles to the video, whilst uploading to youtube, youtube stated, that shakiness was discovered and asked if it should try to stabilize the video. Unfortunately I agreed. Next they analyzed the pictures and actually stabilized the main frame with the result of awfully shaky titles.
Anyway, given that, the rest might be some nice recall of gone times.

Batik (Javanese pronunciation: [ˈbateʔ]; Indonesian pronunciation: [ˈbaːtik]; English: /ˈbætɪk/ or /bəˈtiːk/) is cloth which traditionally uses a manual wax-resist dyeing technique. Due to modern advances in the textile industry, the term has been extended to include fabrics which incorporate traditional batik patterns even if they are not produced using the wax-resist dyeing techniques. Silk batik is especially popular.[citation needed]
Javanese traditional batik, especially from Yogyakarta and Surakarta, has special meanings rooted to the Javanese conceptualization of the universe. Traditional colours include indigo, dark brown, and white which represent the three major Hindu Gods (Brahmā, Visnu, and Śiva). This is related to the fact that natural dyes are only available in indigo and brown. Certain patterns can only be worn by nobility; traditionally, wider stripes or wavy lines of greater width indicated higher rank. Consequently, during Javanese ceremonies, one could determine the royal lineage of a person by the cloth he or she was wearing.
Other regions of Indonesia have their own unique patterns which normally take themes from everyday lives, incorporating patterns such as flowers, nature, animals, folklore or people. The colours of pesisir batik, from the coastal cities of northern Java, is especially vibrant, and it absorbs influence from the Javanese, Arab, Chinese and Dutch culture. In the colonial times pesisir batik was a favorite of the Peranakan Chinese, Dutch and Eurasians.[citation needed].
UNESCO designated Indonesian batik, as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity on October 2, 2009.In return of the acknowledgment, UNESCO demanded Indonesia to preserve their heritage.[1]
Batik or fabrics with the traditional batik patterns are also found in several countries such as Malaysia, Japan, China, India, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Nigeria, Senegal, and Singapore. Malaysian batik often displays plants and flowers in basic patterns
Melted wax (Javanese: malam) is applied to cloth before being dipped in dye. It is common for people to use a mixture of beeswax and paraffin wax. The beeswax will hold to the fabric and the paraffin wax will allow cracking, which is a characteristic of batik. Wherever the wax has seeped through the fabric, the dye will not penetrate. Sometimes several colours are used, with a series of dyeing, drying and waxing steps.
Thin wax lines are made with a canting, a wooden handled tool with a tiny metal cup with a tiny spout, out of which the wax seeps.
After the last dyeing, the fabric is hung up to dry. Then it is dipped in a solvent to dissolve the wax, or ironed between paper towels or newspapers to absorb the wax and reveal the deep rich colors and the fine crinkle lines that give batik its character. This traditional method of batik making is called batik tulis.
For batik prada, gold leaf was used in the Yogjakarta and Surakarta area. The Central Javanese used gold dust to decorate their prada cloth. It was applied to the fabric using a handmade glue consisting of egg white or linseed oil and yellow earth. The gold would remain on the cloth even after it had been washed. The gold could follow the design of the cloth or could take on its own design. Older batiks could be given a new look by applying gold to them.
The application of wax with a canting is done with great care and therefore is very time-consuming. As the population increased and commercial demand rose, time-saving methods evolved. Other methods of applying the wax to the fabric include pouring the liquid wax, painting the wax with a brush, and putting hot wax onto pre-carved wooden or copper block (called a cap or tjap) and stamping the fabric.
The invention of the copper block (cap) developed by the Javanese in the 20th century revolutionized batik production. By block printing the wax onto the fabric, it became possible to mass-produce designs and intricate patterns much faster than one could possibly do by using a canting.
Batik print is the common name given to fabric which incorporates batik pattern without actually using the wax-resist dyeing technique. It represents a further step in the process of industrialization, reducing the cost of batik by mass-producing the pattern repetitively, as a standard practice employed in the worldwide textile industry.
