Batley History Group - Protect Batley Library
Carol Walker of Batley History Group reads a Yorkshire Dialect poem especially written by Mabel Gordon for the 'Protect Batley Library' campaign. Over 7,500 people signed the petition in the hope that the local council would not sell off the magnificent Carnegie Library and Art Gallery, given to the people of Batley over 100 years ago.

Rochdale Town Hall Clock
A look at Rochdale Town Hall Clock, Greater Manchester, on Friday 13th February 2015.
Rochdale Town Hall is a Victorian-era municipal building and is considered as being one of the finest municipal buildings in the country and is rated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building. Built in the Gothic Revival style at a cost of £160,000 (£12.6 million as of 2014) it was inaugurated for the governance of the Municipal Borough of Rochdale on 27th September 1871. The architect, William Henry Crossland, was the winner of a competition held in 1864 to design a new Town Hall.
In 1882 or 1883, dry rot was found in the 240-foot (73 m) high spire. On the recommendation of Rochdale's Borough Surveyor, contractors were engaged to rebuild it. The spire was to be demolished to clear the way for a replacement. It was rumoured that the workmen who were dismantling the top section of the wooden spire may have tried to speed up the dismantling process with matches and, at 9:20 am on 10 April 1883, a blaze was discovered. Despite the efforts of volunteers and the local fire brigade, 100 minutes after the discovery of the fire the entire spire, including a statue of Saint George and the Dragon, had been destroyed. Alfred Waterhouse was given the task of designing a 190-foot (58 m) stone replacement. His work on the clock tower, which was built between 1885 and 1887 about 15 yards (14 m) further to the east than the original shows many similarities to Manchester Town Hall which he also designed. The tower was opened in 1888; an inscribed plaque commemorates the fire of 1883.
The present clock tower is 190 feet (58 m) tall. The first stone was laid by Thomas Schofield JP, Alderman and Rochdale Borough Councillor, on 19 October 1885 and the tower was declared complete on 20 June 1887. It contains five bells which ring on the hour and at 15-minute intervals.
The building came to the attention of Adolf Hitler, who was said to have admired it so much that he wished to ship the building, brick-by-brick, to Nazi Germany had the United Kingdom been defeated in the Second World War.

Manchester Town Hall Clock and Albert Square
A little look at Albert Square and Manchester Town Hall clock right in the heart of Manchester city centre on Monday 9th February 2015.
The square contains a number of monuments and statues, the largest of which is the Albert memorial.
It is dominated by its largest building, Manchester Town Hall Grade I, a Victorian Gothic building by Alfred Waterhouse. Work on the town hall began in 1868 and completed in 1877.
In the early 1970s, there was a plan to build an underground station under Albert Square and neighbouring St Peter's Square, as part of the ill-fated Picc-Vic tunnel project. The project was eventually cancelled and the station was not built.
At the end of the video, the clock can be heard striking 6.00pm. The 280 feet tall clock tower, houses a carillon of 23 bells: 12 are hung for full circle change ringing and were manufactured by John Taylor Bellfounders. The clock was made by Gillett and Bland (predecessor of Gillett and Johnston) and was originally wound using hydraulic power supplied by Manchester Hydraulic Power. The clock bell first rang on New Year's Day 1879 but cracked and was replaced in 1882 and recast with all the bells in 1937. The clock face bears the inscription 'Teach us to number our Days' from Psalm 90:12. The hour bell known as 'Great Abel' was named after Abel Heywood and weighs 8 tons 2.5 cwt. It is inscribed with the initials AH for Abel Heywood and the Tennyson line 'Ring out the false, ring in the true'. This is the fourth largest clock bell in England and the pitch is F#.

Bolton Town Hall Clock
A look at Bolton Town Hall Clock, Greater Manchester, on the late morning of Thursday 12th February 2015.
Bolton Town Hall, Victoria Square, Bolton, was built between 1866 and 1873 for the County Borough of Bolton to designs by William Hill of Leeds and George Woodhouse of Bolton. The town hall was extended in the 1930s to the designs of Bradshaw, Gass and Hope and has been designated a Grade II* listed building by English Heritage.
The Baroque clock tower reaches a height of 198 feet (60.35 metres) and each of the four glass clock faces is 12 feet (3.65 metres) across and illuminated from within at night. The original clock mechanism was built by William Potts of Leeds. The bells were cast by Warner & Sons of London who also provided the quarter hour bells for the Palace of Westminster (but not 'Big Ben', the hour bell). Bolton's hour bell weighs in at just over 4 tons while the four quarter hour bells are 1.5 tons each.
In 1978 Fred Dibnah of television fame, made repairs to the clock tower and its 16 stone pillars. Whilst repairing the tower he gilded the sphere at the top.

Clitheroe Library Clock
A look at Clitheroe Library Clock on Wednesday 3rd June 2015.
In 1902 Clitheroe applied to the Carnegie Foundation for a grant and after a tense wait, in 1903 discovered they had been awarded £3000. New plans were drawn for a building which would suit the site and the final design also incorporated a clock tower. One local family, the Whipps, then offered to provide a clock in memory of three of their kin. The building was designed in 1904 by Blackburn architects, Briggs and Wolstenholme.

Devonshire Dome Clock, Buxton
A look at the clock on the old Devonshire Royal Hospital in Buxton, Derbyshire.
The Devonshire Royal Hospital building (now popularly known as the Devonshire Dome) is a Grade II* listed 18th-century former stable block in Buxton, Derbyshire. It was built by John Carr of York and extended by architect Robert Rippon Duke who added what was then the world's largest unsupported dome, with a diameter of 44.2 metres (145 ft). It is now the site of the Devonshire campus of the University of Derby.
Built between 1780 and 1789, the original building was designed by John Carr of York for William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire. Octagonal in shape, it housed up to 110 horses and the servants of the guests of the Crescent Hotel, built in combination as part of the plan to promote Buxton as a spa town.
In 1859, the Buxton Bath Charity had persuaded the Duke of Devonshire to allow part of the building -- by then accommodating nothing like the 110 horses for which it was designed -- to be converted to a charity hospital for the use of the 'sick poor' coming in for treatment from the 'Cottonopolis' of Lancashire and Yorkshire. The Devonshire estate architect, Henry Currey, architect for St Thomas's Hospital in London, converted two thirds of the building into a hospital.
In 1881, the Buxton Bath Charity trustees under their chairman Dr William Henry Robertson, persuaded William Cavendish, 7th Duke of Devonshire to give them the use of the whole building in exchange for providing new stables elsewhere in the town. Local architect Robert Rippon Duke was commissioned to design a 300-bed hospital to rival Bath and Harrogate for charity medical provision. The Cotton Districts Convalescent fund put up £25,000 for the conversion. The steel structure was clad in slate, and proposed to be supported by 22 curved steel arms. However, during construction the Tay Bridge disaster occurred on 28 December 1879, and so the number of arms was revised upwards. Railway engineer Mr Footner advised that the designers of the Tay Rail Bridge had not taken into account the stresses of lateral wind and storms.
Further changes were undertaken, with the clock tower and lodge completed in 1882, surgical wards in 1897, spa baths in 1913, and the dining room and kitchens in 1921. The building became known as the Devonshire Royal Hospital in 1934.
The Devonshire Royal was the last of the eight hydropathic hospitals in England to close when it closed in 2000.
On 31 January 2001, the University of Derby acquired the Devonshire Royal Hospital. The University received £4.7m Heritage Lottery Fund backing for the restoration and redevelopment project.
I am not sure who the maker of the clock was but it is quarter chiming as heard in this video.

Hull Guildhall Clock
A look at Hull Guildhall Clock on Sunday 15th June 2014.
The original clock was designed and installed in the original Town Hall by Barnard Cooke in 1865 as a time piece and hour strike only. It included an hour bell weighing 2.5 tons and is one of the only currently functioning original mechanical tower clocks in the country.
When the new Guildhall tower was constructed in 1914 the clock was transferred and enlarged to include quarter hour chimes and four new quarter bells were added to blend in with the hour bell.
In 2004, to mark the 100th anniversary of the signing of a contract with Quibells to construct the new Guildhall, a 23-bell carillon was added to the bell tower.

St Mary the Virgin Church Clock, Bury
A look at St Mary the Virgin Church Clock in Bury, Lancashire on Saturday 18th October 2014.
Church records suggest that the first church was built on the site in 971 A.D. when parishes were first formed by King Edgar of England, although this is likely to have been a wood and thatch structure. Churches of this type of construction are thought to have been used until a church in the gothic style was completed in 1585. Between 1773 and 1780 the main body of this church was demolished and rebuilt leaving only the spire from the original church. The spire was replaced in 1842 but by 1870 the wood in the rest of the church had rotted and a new building was needed. The new church designed by the architect J. S. Crowther, leaving the 1842 spire in place, was officially opened on the Feast of the Annunciation on 2 February 1876.

Carlisle Old Town Hall Clock
A look at Carlisle old town hall clock on Saturday 21st March 2015.
The Old Town Hall was built on the grounds of the old medieval hall, which was demolished in 1668. The work on the new building were completed by 1669. The right-gabled extension and clock tower were added in 1717. The clock mechanism dates from around 1900 and was given a restoration in 2007.
A number of stories exist as to why it has 3 clock faces.
One legend suggests that it is not showing the time towards Scotland as a way of saying that the City ‘does not have the time for Scotland’. No evidence has so far been found to confirm if the clock originally had 4 faces and one has been removed.

A look at Evesham Town Hall Clock on Saturday 7th February 2015.
The Town Hall, known as the new Guild Hall 150 years ago, is amongst the oldest buildings in Evesham, older buildings being the churches of All Saints and St. Lawrence, the Bell Tower, the Almonry, Abbot Reginald’s Gateway and the former Evesham Grammar School at Merstow Green, as well as the Round House next to the Town Hall.
The building was remodelled in 1885, and the Clock Tower erected in 1887 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. The Clock Tower was refurbished early in 1998.

From Parks To Pavilions - Full Documentary
Following a year long research project developed by the AYA Foundation working with young people from West Yorkshire, the From Parks To Pavilions documentary shines a light on the stories and pioneers behind the development of the Bradford based Quaid-e Azam Sunday Cricket League, which was founded in Dewsbury from a desire to gain access to grounds and to play on Sunday, the community’s ‘day off’.
The community set their sights on levelling the ‘playing field’ and developing a next generation of players that would one-day represent Yorkshire, their home county – which had prohibited them from playing, not because of talent but because they were simply not born in Yorkshire.
The documentary follows a community’s economic migration to Britain after the Second World War, which singlehandedly helped keep industries, in particular, the textile industry, alive.
This is the untold story of the South Asian expat community’s settlement in Britain and its attempt at playing the national game, cricket.

The project was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and delivered with support from Bradford Local Studies Libraries, Yorkshire Cricket Foundation and England and Wales Cricket Boards (ECB).

Thornton's Arcade Clock, Leeds
A look at the clock in the Thornton's Arcade in Leeds on Friday 16th January 2015.
The Ivanhoe Clock, at one end of Thornton's Arcade, was built in 1877 by William Potts and Sons of Leeds. Robin Hood, Richard the Lion-Hearted, Friar Tuck and Gurth the Swineherd, all characters in the 19th century novel Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott, feature on the clock. Each character, in turn, marks the quarter hour by striking a large bell with his fists. The life-sized figures were sculpted by Leeds artist John Wormald Appleyard. The 5 bells were provided by John Taylor of Loughborough.
