The Todt Battery is a battery of coastal artillery built by the Germans in World War II, located in the hamlet of Haringzelle, Audinghen, near Cape Gris Nez, Pas de Calais, France. It was one of the most important coastal fortifications of the Atlantic Wall, and consisted of four 380 millimetres calibre Krupp guns with a range up to 55.7 kilometres , capable of reaching the British coast, and each protected by a bunker of reinforced concrete.

C'est le 10 février 1942 que fut inaugurée avec éclat la batterie offensive de 4 pièces de 380 mm en casemates, que l'on appelait jusque là Batterie Siegried et à qui on donna le nom de « Batterie Todt » pour rappeler le souvenir de l'ingénieur constructeur allemand tué la veille (janvier 1942) dans un accident d'aviation.

Deux jours plus tard, le 12 février, cette batterie entrait en action en effectuant un tir de contre-batterie pour favoriser le passage le long de la côte des cuirassés « Gneisenau » et « Scharnhorst » et du croiseur-lourd « Prinz Eugen ».

Cette batterie avait été placé au sud du Gris-Nez, au lieudit Haringzelle, et, constituait un ensemble redoutable.

Elle tirait des obus fusants ou percutants jusqu'à 42 kilomètres . Placée à une altitude de 60 à 70 mètres , selon la position des pièces, elle atteignait facilement les côtes anglaises.

Cette batterie protégée par des cathédrales de béton armé était défendue par 9 pièces de 75 en cuve pour assurer la défense anti-aérienne avec batteries de projecteurs.

La défense terrestre (en prévision d'un coup de main allié toujours possible et sans cesse redouté) était assurée par une ceinture de « tobrouks » (trous à bordure cimentée) armée de mitrailleuses de 8 en nombre variable.

Le personnel (18 hommes et 4 officiers par pièce de 380), celui de défense des côtes et de la D.C., des deux postes directeurs installés au « Cran Mademoiselle » et la batterie de protection du « Cran Poulet » était de 600 hommes

Todt Battery

The Todt Battery is a battery of coastal artillery built by the Germans in World War II, located in the hamlet of Haringzelle, Audinghen, near Cape Gris Nez, Pas de Calais, France. It was one of the most important coastal fortifications of the Atlantic Wall, and consisted of four 38 cm Krupp guns with a range up to 55.7 km, capable of reaching the British coast, and each protected by a bunker of reinforced concrete.

History

The battery fired its first shell on 20 January 1942, although it was only officially opened in February 1942 in the presence of high Kriegsmarine dignitaries. Originally to be called Siegfried Battery, it was renamed in honour of the German engineer Fritz Todt, creator of the Todt Organisation and responsible for the construction of the Atlantic Wall, who died in a plane crash days before the battery's inauguration.

The battery was taken by Anglo-Canadian troops in September 1944, after an intense aerial bombardment, as part of Operation Undergo.

Museum

One of the four casemates now houses a museum about World War II, Musée du Mur de l'Atlantique. The exhibits include military hardware, including, outside, one of two surviving Krupp K5 artillery rail-mounted cannon.

Intended to assist the Third Reich in its plan to invade England (Operation Sea Lion), it was never used for that purpose as Hitler lost the Battle of Britain and never carried out the invasion. Today, it is an Atlantic Wall Museum containing a great collection of uniforms, weapons and equipment - in addition to an original Krupp K5 rail-mounted artillery gun; one of only two known to exist in the world. The AtlantikWall was one of the largest man-made structures, ever built during wartime. À complete, concrete defense line along the Atlantic coast. One of the most prestigious complexes was “Batterie Todt”, à series of 4 artillery bunkers with the purpose of attacking the UK and defending the Kriegsmarine when crossing the channel.
Batterie Todt got intensely bombarded and 1 of the bunkers got completely wiped away.
Yet .. historians believe that there are still “treasures” to be found, deep under the bunkers, where access is almost impossible.
Almost … since we found à way in .. and we did find Nazi artefacts yes .. but it was just not the treasure we were hoping to find.
Please, do NOT try this yourself. The bunkers are on private property, they are ready to collapse and it's just not worth risking your life.

La batterie Todt est une batterie d'artillerie côtière allemande de la Seconde Guerre mondiale située dans le hameau d'Haringzelles, commune d'Audinghen, dans la partie sud du cap Gris-Nez.

10 - Trip to France 2015 -Todt Battery

Batterie Todt Casement (turm) No 4, France

Batterie Todt consists of 4 massive concrete artillery emplacements, one of which (no 1) is today a museum (not featured here as it was closed the day I was there) and several small outer (ranging?) bunkers.

Hidden from view on the road towards the museum (but visable from roads nearer the coast) are three casements not open to the public. This video shows my visit to casement no 4 with clear views of the English cliffs west of the Port of Dover.

The video starts at the path leading up to the massive structure (and it is seriously massive). Several walking tours of the structure follow, including a few images from the field in front of the structure (which do not do justice to its size) as well as views inside the building.

The structure contained many side rooms which were too dark to film.

To any visitor planning a trip to this area, make for this location (exact co-ordinates are in the map options) this really is a must-see. Compared with other bunkers I have seen this was the most remarkable. Well worth a detour (not recommended for school groups because there are many steep drops, darkened corridors and probably questionable things inside. As can be seen from the clips, a lot of climbing required and it is a death trap).
