Nova Scotia Provincial Parks- 2010 Geocaching - Salsman & Battery
Documenting the on-site visits at five provincial parks as part of the Nova Scotia Parks geocaching challenge. You have a passport, and you visit five parks, look for a tree, identify the tree so that you may find the final cache. Inside the geocache, there is a punch to use against your passport. Once you have all five, send it in for a free geocoin.
This video shows the adventure at Salsman Provincial Park in Guysborough county. We also see Battery Provincial Park in St Peter's Cape Breton. From our vantage point we could see The historic St/ Peter's Canal, which connects to the Bras D'Or lakes.
You can also see the forest devastation caused by the beetle attacking the spruce trees.
You can read more about the challenge at the Atlantic Canada Geocaching Association.
Or click straight to the ACGA event page
Nova Scotia Provincial Parks and ACGA have partnered to provide a new geocaching challenge for the 2010 season. The inaugural launch event will be held at Smiley's Provincial Park on June 19th 2010 (GC25MQ2).
Five official park sanctioned geocaches will be part of the geocaching challenge, which will be spread across five (5) provincial parks in Nova Scotia. The geocaches will be published on June 19th 2010.
The geocache that is part of the passport series was a single stage multi, where after identification of the big pine tree, allowed them to find the final cache location within the park. Wizards of Caching were the FTF on this cache and were given a prize after the event.
At 3pm, a guided walk along the trails was lead by the park supervisor who led a group of over 20 geocachers along the trail to a unique location in the park.
The end of the event had the usual draw for prizes, free night of camping at any provincial park certificates, geocoins, shirts, vests & accessories were handed out, over 20 draws were held.
Prizes were generously donated by NS Parks, ACGA & The North Pace (via The Trail Shop).
Thanks to all of the parks staff at Smiley's and at the head office for their desire to get the program up & running.
How to Play
You will be required to use a passport provided at participating provincial parks or download from ACGA or Nova Scotia Parks. Each passport will list out the rules, disclaimers and more importantly the list of geocaches that are part of the challenge. But before finding the geocaches, you will need to review your knowledge of trees (hardwood, softwood).
As part of the challenge, each of the five geocaches have a central theme; trees.
Once you find the geocache, use the supplied punch to your passport to keep track of your finds. After completing all five geocaches, simply mail in your passport to the address supplied to Nova Scotia Parks and you will receive a limited edition trackable geocoin along with another item thanking you for participating.
About the Geocaches
Each geocache as part of the program is a one stage multi-geocache. When you first get your passport, you will see the starting coordinates of each cache, along with the gc waypoint name. The initial waypoint will lead you to the tree that you will need to identify in order to solve the final stage of the multi. The final location is located within the park and is a winter friendly location.
You will need the geocache listing & the identified tree in order to decrypt the final geocache location. The decryption task should take 2-4 minutes and the only knowledge you need is the correct tree name. The geocache listings won't be published on geocaching.com until June 19th.
The geocaches that are part of the passport program are:
Smiley's (GC270A6)
Amherst Shore (GC28CK8)
Ellenwood (GC28CKD)
Battery (GC279BV)
Salsman (GC2709Y)
The Passport
You can donwload the passport from ACGA or NS Parks.
Where to Play
Located on on the southeast coast of Cape Breton Island, the park is on a hillside overlooking St. Peters Bay.
The lighthouse found in the park serves as a landmark for the entrance to St. Peters Canal. Completed in 1869, the 800 m (2,600 ft.) canal and lock system allow vessels to sail between Bras d' Or Lake and the Atlantic Ocean.
The Park is home to a number of historically significant sites, including the site of a lime kiln used to make plaster and mortar, some of which was used in the construction of Fortress Louisbourg, as well as the remains of two forts that involved in the French and English struggle over the North American continent.
Located on a small peninsula on the east side of Country Harbour, Guysborough County. The park offers campers a quiet setting to relax and enjoy day trips along the Marine Drive. #avoidingchores #VisitNovaScotia #hikingNS

I made this trip in early October, 2016. Video shot with a Brinno TLC-200 Pro time-lapse camera, mounted on my roof with a homemade magnetic case. I travel with two Brinno cameras - one facing forward, the other in reverse. Sometimes the reverse camera captures better video (fewer raindrops and bugs hit the rear-view lens).

Hiking Trails of Cape Breton - St. Peter's
The rail-line into St. Peter's was one of the first abandoned in Nova Scotia. Consequently, the trees and other vegetation have had a number of years to thicken and encroach into the treadway. As a result, this is one of the more attractive rail-trails in the province - and it helps that it traces the shore of St. Peter's Bay.
This route will be profiled in Hiking Trails of Nova Scotia, 9th edition.
