Fort Stevens Military Jail Tour near Hammond, OR; State Park
The jail was abandoned after World War 2 and they turned it into a communications center. But they still kept the jail cells, which were turned into offices. Then the building was turned over to the Arny Corp of Engineers, who didn't do anything with it. They had no need to control it and eventually sold it to the Oregon Parks system so they could turn it into a recreated museum.
As you will see with Fort Stevens, much of it is decimated now. They gave it to the Army Corp of Engineers. We know that the Engineers are definitely not landlords, so they razed all the wooden buildings. it was an unintentional loss for the future park system.
The lesson here is to never sell anything to the Army Corp of Engineers if you don't want it worked on. They have the equipment to turn the area into whatever they wanted to. The engineers may have intended to build something on top of the fort, but never got around to doing anything.
the open hours are very narrow here. They don't even post opening hours because they are so sporadic.
