Lady biker Joan 80th Birthday ACE CAFE LONDON Mick Duckworth ACE TIMES History book MARK WILSMORE
ace-cafe-london.com We took my Mum Joan to the world famous Ace Cafe in London for her 80th Birthday big surprise. Mum has not been back there since the mid 1950s where she used to take her own countless classic British bikes to. Mick Duckworth, author of ACE TIMES had interviewed Mum at length, and she features in his famous book. Mum was called Joan Minns originally, and her story + photos take up the whole of page 24. Mick Duckworth was there for Mum's Birthday where she was presented with the book. Mick and Ace Cafe owner Mark Wilsmore both signed her book and looked after her all day long. The Ace Cafe treated Mum, myself and my other half Geoff to a lovely free dinner and drinks as their special treat. Mum was treated like a celebraty by everyone, including Talk Sport Radio & television presenter Steve Berry and his film maker girlfriend Karen Porter, who will be making a biker documentary including my Mum. This is my photo album from this lovely event today
I will put a link to asap. I was brought up in Shepherds Bush, London by my amazing Mum Joan, now aged 80. She was a VERY rare lady in those days, who owned lots of big bikes. They include 2 Aerial square 4's, 2 triumph speed twins, BSA Bantam, Triumph Terrier, Aerial 600, Jawa, Francis Barnet 250 Twin. When I was born she got a Busmar side car, to put me and her Boxer dog in (she did not give up riding even then). Mum was secretary of the Alperton & Wembley motorcycle club, and often went to the Ace Cafe during the early 50's. She has some incredible stories and pictures to share. She got sacked from a telephonist job at George Wimpy, simply because it was considered ''unladylike'' to arrive and leave on a motorbike (even though she packed a suitable work skirt/dress in her bag). Mum has also ridden countless other big bikes, and did trials + scrambling as well. She used to do all her own repairs too!!! She bought me my own Bike, a BSA C15 Star as a teenager. She soon realised I was too girly to follow in her footsteps....I got into classic cars instead!
I contacted the Ace Cafe to show them Mum's brilliant photos. They instantly put me in touch with their historian author Mick Duckworth, as he was about to write the 70th year anniversary book. Mum has been interviewed at length and has now featured in their special book.
I also contacted 'Vintage motorcycle girls' on Myspace a couple of years ago. They have put all of Mum's lovely photos on their own site. For those of you into ladies classic bikes, it is a fantastic site to look at.
My mum is now disabled, after having three hip replacement operations. This was partly due to years of all weather biking, and kicking starting them all the time. They did not have the modern luxury of a push button electric starter. She still is action woman, and goes to aqua aerobics 4 times a week! She still has a model girl figure amazingly. The new photos at the end are of Mum age 77 on our 1950 Vincent Black Lightning racing bike, bought on 27th August 2009. Mum dare not ride a solo more, but she can still reminisce about the old days. If someone has an old British combination with a sidecar to trust her with, Mum WOULD still want to ride it for old time sake
