Farmers' market , Bauernmarkt / Erzeugermarkt Konstablerwache, Frankfurt, Germany
Bauernmarkt Konstablerwache or The Erzeugermarkt (Producers’ Market) at Konstablerwache in downtown Frankfurt has been one of Frankfurt’s most popular institutions for many years. The place is very crowded and lively, mostly with locals enjoying their Apvelwein and Beer ; and yet not touristy. The mirth and the laughter and the loud conversations creates a jovial atmosphere.
With some 52 stalls, it is the city’s biggest farmers’ market. The market also features a large number of organic-food stalls and produce grown at Demeter farms. Held every Thursday and Saturday, the market attracts visitors from all across Frankfurt and beyond. Here, they have the chance, for example, to try homemade apple wine from the nearby Wetterau, Odenwald and Spessart regions. One also finds a range of old, hard-to-find apple and pear varieties, which are mostly unknown nowadays, even to die-hard locals.
The bulk Cash-only and fluent only in German, the Altstadt area begins to fill with patrons by 0800 hrs. Erzeugermarkt Konstablerwache offers everything from Lamb Skins or Riesling to handmade Sausages, Cheese and Pastry at prices that are much lower than other stands, shops or restaurants throughout the city. You can feast on Currywurst intensely spiced but superb in taste ; Pastries with their Caramelized Hazelnut Braid, then with soft and springy Doughnuts ; Vogelsberger Holzofenbrot’s Berliner, the Bee Sting Cake shellacked in Almonds as well as buttery Pie Crust brushed with Custard and topped with poached Rhubarb juxtaposing big chunks of Brown Sugar Streusel. Stroll farther down and choose your Made-to-order Waffles ; the handmade Brat and Rindwurst from Bio-Bauernhof Wingenfeld ; Maja's Backwaren with the best Pretzel found in Frankfurt for just 1€.
Performing equally well with Marble Cake, the Crumb course but moist with Butter, the Poppy Seed Danish called Verschiedene Kaffeestückchen is delicious and managable for one while Donauwelle weighing almost half a kilogram more than justified its 4€ price by eating something like a Cream Cheese Brownie dialed up by Sour Cherries.

Farmer Market Konstablerwache (Outdoor Grocery Shopping) - Frankfurt, Germany (Frankfurt am Main)
As I always suggest to my friends and followers, the best way to know about a city/town and learn its culture is by taking local transportation, walk around local streets, try the street food and drinks, go to the local public farmer's market. Coz that's best way to see how the locals live their lives.
If you are visiting the heart of Frankfurt's city centre, be sure to check out it's farmer market (outdoor), Bauernmarkt Konstablerwache. As far as I remember what my private tour guide told me, the farmer's market opens weekly on Thursdays and Saturdays. In case you wonder how on earth I would remember the business hours, this is because 1) I am a good listener and 2) I just find it interesting that you setup the tents and everything for farmer's market, that you would take it down on Thursday night, skip the Friday and then set it all up on Saturday again. For me, with all that effort, it makes more sense to open on Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays, coz it's more efficient and worthwhile to set up all the tents. Anyhow, it is what it is and I am sure the vendors and the City of Frankfurt have their own reasoning. And funny or not, that's how I remember that they only open on Thursdays and Saturdays.
This public market has everything, flowers, meat, vegetables, beverages, cooked food, everything is so fresh and very reasonably priced. Our private tour guide told us that this was the season for mushrooms (month of September). There were a large variety of different types of mushrooms.
Additionally, I have never seen so many types of apples available for sale. In Canada, we just go to the supermarket and just find apples, coz the chances are, there are usually max of 2 or 3 different types of apples. That's different in Frankfurt, from a glance, there are at least 10+ types of apples.
We were told the apple wine and freshly squeezed apple juices are delicious here. If you like, you can even purchase a bottle of it. I had a glass and it was delicious. The richness from the apple juice and it's not bitter or sour at all, it was just perfect!

The Kleinmarkthalle is a market hall in the old town of Frankfurt am Main. On working days, from 63 retailers in 156 market stalls, all kinds of fresh food, but also flowers and seeds, are offered on approximately 1,500 square meters of space. In addition to regional specialties, such as the green sauce, imported food is also sold today. Likewise, some retailers are running snack stalls in the hall. This makes the Kleinmarkthalle a retail center with significance for the entire Rhine-Main region.
Originally in Frankfurt, as in other cities, fresh produce was brought into the city by local farmers and sold on public marketplaces. Numerous traditional street names and places point out, for example the Weckmarkt, the corn market, the chicken market and the horse market. In the Old Town, the artisans lived and worked separately according to guilds, where, for example, the butchers sold meat and sausages in their dishes.
In the 19th century, the increased demands on hygiene requirements arose from a regulation of market operation. In 1871 the magistrate decided to build an urban market hall on the premises between Fahrgasse and Hasengasse. It was built between 1877 and 1879 in the then modern style of the Neo-Renaissance under the direction of Stadtbaurat Behnke by J. S. Friesohn.
The old market hall was a glazed iron construction in the form of a three-nave basilical hall of 117 meters in length, 34 meters in width and 22 meters in height. Only the four symmetrical corner risers were massively executed in stone. The sales area on the ground floor included 4,000 square meters with 354 sales stands, 114 other stands were placed on a 6 meter wide circulating gallery. The market hall soon enjoyed great popularity among its citizens. Friedrich Stoltz wrote:
To drink, to drink, and what else, that creeps here in the Hall. And owwe uff of the gallery, since möpselts to Fromaash de Brie.
Until the opening of the wholesale market hall in 1928, the market hall also served the wholesale trade. At the beginning of the 20th century a tram line was established between the preferred bourgeois residential area in the Westend and the lane. In the Volksmund, it was also referred to as the maid service line.
In 1929 the hall was rebuilt, its façade straightened. In March 1944 the small market hall was destroyed during the heavy bomb attacks on Frankfurt, their remains after the Second World War were removed.
