Day Odyssey Series: A Maryland and West Virginia Mountain Ride!
SCENERY (for sure)!! HISTORY (most definitely)!! ACTION PACKED (well, not quite)!! But still, here it is, folks! Our next long-awaited day odyssey has arrived!
As usual, we begin in Baltimore-for real this time, as our first point of interest is within the city limits! We then go on to Glyndon (a former WMRY stop) and Westminster before making the first of our stops at Baugher's Farm-and Zoo!
Baugher's is a farm specializing in whatever's in season-and more. Lots of fresh fruits and veggies-and a cool petting zoo! A highly recommended stop should you be in the area.
Then we're on to Taneytown, passing through Frizzellburg, Tyrone, and Mayberry (YES-Mayberry) along the way. You'll also see how it all looked back in the 90s.
Continuing west to Emmittsburg, then south on US 15 to MD 550 and Sabillasville, the location of WMRY's horseshoe curve (YES-they had one too). We wind up on 'route 66' to Boonsboro, then MD 34 to the C&O Canal at Snyders Landing, where we stop at our next points of interest, the first of which being Barron's Store.
Barron's is a nice country store catering to the C&O Canal hikers and bikers. Although the store was somewhat reduced in size since I stopped there in 1997 during the filming of my C&O documentary, it's still a highly-recommended stop. Mr. Barron passed on, and the folks operating it now are doing a great job of keeping things going. We had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Barron in 1997, and he appears briefly in the inset video from that visit. Stop in and tell 'em Bullfrog sent ya! You might not get a discount-but you'll make their day, and they deserve your support.
We then have a look at the canal at Snyders Landing and Packhorse Ford before crossing into Shepherdstown WV...and the NSRR station. After that-it's on to Martinsburg and WV route 9, where the adventure begins! Some nice quaint hamlets: Berkeley Springs, Great Cacapon, Largent and Paw Paw-and two more B&O stations! Not to mention Prospect Peak! You'll wanna watch for that!
Then back to MD and two more C&O Canal points of interest: the Paw Paw Tunnel and historic Oldtown, where we check out the historic lockhouse.
Our final location before hitting the highway is Cumberland, a big CSX hub, where lines split for Pittsburgh and Cincinnati, and where I make an attempt to catch an EMD while I'm on the fly. Then it's I-68/I-70 back to the fat city. Check out the classic footage of I-68 from the 80s when it was still US 48!
Watch for the 'explosive' finale!!
Many thanx to all dedicated viewers of this series!! Hope you enjoy the ride!
Video date: July 5 2015.
