Bauhaus building in Dessau - Architect: Walter Gropius, 1926
The Bauhaus building is regarded as a key work of European modernism. It combines the principles of functionalism with an outstanding architectonic quality, using then modern materials such as glass and reinforced concrete. Built as a school of design, its structure expresses the curriculum of Bauhaus ideas. Besides this architectonic significance with its radical, new approaches, the location also draws its historically unique relevance from the important contributions made here to the radical renewal of art, design and architecture in the twentieth century. The Bauhaus building currently houses the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation.

The Dessau Bauhaus Germany
A look at what influenced individual architecture and what will always exceed the designers' intentions. Perhaps the most famous of 20th century modern architecture and design movements, Walter Gropius’ Bauhaus school, contributed a vocabulary of simplified geometrical designs and primary color schemes that pushed European aesthetics out of a stifling traditionalism.

Marriage between art and space
공간에 작품만들기
In a crowded urban setting, it can be hard to take time to appreciate art. But these artists believe that sometimes,... it′s right in front of our noses.
To tell us more, we are joined by our Yim Yoonhee in the studio.
We′ve talked in the past about art and its relationship to architecture.
So today I have another artist as well as a whole art foundation that examines not just the link between art and architecture, but art in our everyday lives.
An urban city of the 21st century,... intensely over-populated, full of contrasting space.
Architect Cho Min-suk founded the Mass Studies project in 2003,... a project that examines the relationship between architecture and art,... a place where the past and future meet,... a utopia versus reality.
The exhibition takes a look at the past 12 years of Cho′s works,... in particular architecture,... an aspect of the everyday Cho believes is closely tied with art.
While most focus on the before and after of construction of a building, here, it′s the process that shapes the building and the culture around it.
[KOREAN]
There are scores of people from different backgrounds collaborating here as well. This is an exhibition that has brought together many people I respect, including photographers.
The art and design school Bauhaus, originally located in Germany, was open for just 14 years.
But it had tremendous influence over 20th century art, architecture, textile, design, and everything in between.
Korea′s leading modern and contemporary art powerhouse, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, has collaborated with the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation to put together an exhibition that examines humanity′s response to the changes of a new era.
[KOREAN]
Kandinsky , Oskar Schlemmer , Laszlo Moholy-Nagy ,... these are some of the lesser-known masters in art history you can see here.
This is the first full scale Bauhaus exhibition in Asia, and includes the work of six Korean artists who reflect Bauhaus in the 21st century.
There is actually a Cafe Bauhaus in the Seoul Arts Center. So the movement has clearly had an impact here in Korea. For those that aren′t familiar with it, please tell us more about the Bauhaus movement.
The Bauhaus movement united art and industrial design in the early 1900s, which became more and more prevalent to modern times.
And Bauhaus was actually created out of the fear of society losing individuality to the manufacturing industriousness of the modern era.
So through embracing the fact that this world was becoming more technological, more industrial, the fundamental values of Bauhaus were created and spread throughout the world.
But let′s go back to the first exhibition. Now I′ve seen one of his works before,... the big white installation piece.
At this gallery, they′re also showing The Ringdome which is a very famous work of Cho that has been installed around the world, in places like New York and Milan.
And now you can see the very intricate installation piece here in Seoul.
Plateau, the gallery housing the exhibition, is dedicated to contemporary art, and the constant evolution of the arts.
This said,... architect Cho′s works fit perfectly as Mass Studies is something that is always changing to include the wide range of different perspectives and views that are continually being created in the 21st century.
Thank you.
You′re very welcome.

the Bauhaus building by Walter Gropius, world heritage
the Dessau Bauhaus Foundation handles business and sees it as one of its tasks to make the thinking and the inheritance accessible to a greater audience. Since 1999, postgraduate education is available, but the new Bauhaus is more then just a museum or school; the institution is THE place to be for education, research and design of the present day urban development.
Walter Gropius really became famous with the transparent glass architecture of the Bauhaus building. He had thought up a three dimensional form that was way ahead of its time. The building did not in any way have a claim to eternal fame, but strangely it seems to have done just that.
Gropius designed the building as a well functioning cover that would bring the outside world in, and let the inside world out. His Bauhaus educational theory was 'art and technology, a new unity'.
Laat ons samen het nieuwe gebouw van de toekomst scheppen sprak architect Walter Gropius, die van 1919 tot 1928 directeur van het beroemde Bauhaus in Weimar en Dessau was.

Bauhaus : A History Of Modern Architecture
Bauhaus : A History Of Modern Architecture
Staatliches Bauhaus (About this sound listen (help·info)), commonly known simply as Bauhaus, was an art school in Germany that combined crafts and the fine arts, and was famous for the approach to design that it publicised and taught. It operated from 1919 to 1933. At that time the German term About this sound Bauhaus (help·info)—literally construction house—was understood as meaning School of Building.
The Bauhaus was first founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar. In spite of its name and the fact that its founder was an architect, the Bauhaus, during the first years of existence, did not have an architecture department. Nonetheless, it was founded with the idea of creating a total work of art in which all arts, including architecture, would eventually be brought together. The Bauhaus style later became one of the most influential currents in modern design, Modernist architecture and art, design and architectural education. The Bauhaus had a profound influence upon subsequent developments in art, architecture, graphic design, interior design, industrial design, and typography.
