Latvia is a small Baltic republic, a country with a strong national identity, situated within the centre of the Baltic States. Throughout the course of history its desire for freedom has always taken it forward. Riga is the capital of Latvia, a Hanseatic city and European capital of culture. Saint Petri Church is one of the oldest in the centre of the city and, at the same time, a main landmark. It is one of the most important sacred buildings of the Middle Ages and is closely linked with the development of the city. Close to Riga is Jurmala, today a popular health resort on the Latvian Riviera, with splendid bay-windowed villas, battlements and towers, formerly Baroque and later with a nod at Gothic. Thirty kilometres of beaches with bright erinaceous quartz and a mild climate created a holiday paradise in the nineteenth century. Amid the fertile Zemgale Plain is the magnificent, huge Baroque Jelgava Castle, the largest in Latvia. In 1737 the residence of the then secular ruler of the Duchy Of Kurland was built on the ramparts of an ancient castle of the Livonian Order. Beneath the southeast corner of the castle is the Crypt Of The Dukes, a tomb vault with thirty superbly decorated sarcophagi of tin and wood. The picturesque primordial river valley of Gauja has for centuries attracted travellers from each corner of the world. This Livonian Switzerland not only has the charm of primary nature, but also all the ambience of the Middle Ages. Today’s Latvia is now striking a healthy balance between a market economy, ancient traditions and the burdensome legacy of a turbulent past. Its journey into the European Union has been a success, thanks to courage, strength and faith!

It’s a charming, little town worth visiting either as a rest stop between Latvia’s western Baltic coast and Riga, or as a perfect weekend break away from the busy streets of Riga. Nevertheless, we’ve managed to experience the following as a day trip away from Riga. Read on to find out what to see and do in Kuldīga, where to dine, as well as some practical transport tips about getting to Kuldīga.

KURZEMES-ZEMGALES HERCOGU KETLERU LAIKA MŪZIKAS UN MĀKSLAS FESTIVĀLS VIVAT CURLANDIA! 2017
2017. gada 15. un 16. jūlijā jau otro gadu Bauskas pilī, Bauskas Kultūras centrā un Bauskas Sv. Gara baznīcā notiks Kurzemes-Zemgales hercogu Ketleru laika mūzikas un mākslas festivāls Vivat Curlandia!”. Festivāla laikā izskanēs viduslaiku un renesanses mūzika, ko atskaņos mūziķi no Latvijas, Lietuvas, Spānijas, Austrijas, Itālijas un Francijas. Apmeklētājiem būs iespēja arī vērot senāko līdz mūsdienām saglabājušos Džulio Kačīni operu “Eiridīke”.
On 15th and 16th of July 2017, the Festival of Music and Art of the Times of Kettler Dukes of Kurzeme-Zemgale Vivat Curlandia! will be held for the second time in the Bauska Castle, the Town Hall and the Bauska Church of the Holy Spirit. In the framework of the Festival, the Medieval and Renaissance music will be performed by the musicians from Latvia, Lithuania, Spain, Austria, Italy and France. The visitors will also be able to listen to the earliest surviving opera Euridice written by Giulio Caccici.

From Riga to Vilnius by Bus - Latvia / Lithuania 4K Travel Channel
The journey to Lithuania, our third Baltic country, lies ahead of us. For this trip, we bought a ticket for the long-distance bus.
It is very convenient for us. In the morning we only have to walk through the railway underpass in front of our hotel and are already at the bus station.
The bus leaves directly to the south along the Daugava. Then it crosses the river via the southern bridge, the Dienvidu Tilts. It seems that this area is mainly settled by industrial companies.
We quickly reach the flat land that is used for agriculture. The border between Latvia and Lithuania lies between the cities Bauska and Pasvalys. The Latvian-Lithuanian border can only be recognized by the trucks parking spaces to the right and left of the road. A well-developed motorway leads from Panevezys directly to Vilnius. Within the EU, the Baltic countries are also part of the Schengen area.
When driving through the vast meadows and forests, many descriptions of women and children, who had to flee from the eastern regions after World War II, come to our mind. Many have been lost and some children had to eke out a living with work on the farms for years. Some farmers would have liked forever to care for the children, but most of them wanted to go back to their relatives.
Upon driving into the city of Vilnius, we see modern office buildings and many car dealers along the street. The city provides a modern impression. Later we will also get to know the medieval core of the city.

Vor uns liegt die Reise nach Litauen, unser drittes baltisches Land auf dieser Tour. Dafür haben wir uns ein Ticket für den Fernbus besorgt.
Es ist für uns sehr praktisch, da wir am Morgen lediglich eine Unterführung unter den Bahngleisen direkt vor unserem Hotel passieren müssen und schon sind wir am Busbahnhof.
Der Bus fährt direkt nach Süden an der Düna entlang und überquert diese dann auf der südlichen Brücke, die Dienvidu Tilts. In diesem Bereich scheinen eher Industriebetriebe angesiedelt zu sein.
Doch rasch erreichen wir das flache Land, das landwirtschaftlich genutzt wird. Zwischen Bauska und Pasvalys passieren wir die Grenze zwischen Lettland und Litauen. Sie ist nur noch anhand von LKW Parkplätzen rechts und links der Straße zu erkennen. Ab Panevezys führt eine gut ausgebaute Autobahn direkt nach Vilnius. Auch die baltischen Länder sind Teil des Schengen-Raums innerhalb der EU.
Bei der Fahrt durch die weiten Wiesen und Wälder fallen uns so manche Schilderungen von Frauen und Kindern ein, die nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg aus den Ostgebieten fliehen mussten. Viele haben sich verloren und manche Kinder mussten sich jahrelang mit Arbeit auf den Bauernhöfen durchschlagen. Manche Bauern hätten die Kinder gerne für immer aufgenommen, aber die meisten wollten wieder zu ihren Verwandten.
Bei der Einfahrt in Vilnius säumen moderne Bürogebäude und viele Autohändler die Straße. Die Stadt vermittelt uns einen modernen Eindruck. Später werden wir auch den mittelalterlichen Kern der Stadt kennenlernen.

Latvia's only palace, the Palace of Rundale, a wonderful Baroque palace built between 1736 and 1740 as a summer residence for Ernst Johann Biron, Duke of Courland.
