Paihia is the main tourist town in the Bay of Islands in the far north of the North Island of New Zealand. It is 60 kilometres north of Whangarei, located close to the historic towns of Russell and Kerikeri. Missionary Henry Williams named the mission station Marsden's Vale and eventually the Paihia became the accepted name of the settlement.
Nearby to the north is the historic settlement of Waitangi, and the residential and commercial area of Haruru Falls is to the west. The port and township of Opua, and the small settlement of Te Haumi, lie to the south. The population of Paihia was 1719 in the 2013 Census, a decrease of 54 from 2006.
CHASING DOLPHINS IN NEW ZEALAND | Bay of Islands, NZ
One of the most beautiful and DIVERSE regions in New Zealand, and most overlooked in my opinion, NORTHLAND has got plenty to offer both on land and on water...
Big thanks to GREATSIGHTS for offering such a great boat cruise of the BAY OF ISLANDS. Was not expecting to see a live pod of dolphins take a break from hunting to launch out of the ocean, true showmanship of the animal kingdom...

Bay of Islands Bath Tub Race, Paihia
The Bay of Islands Bath Tub Race will be held in Paihia.
It is becoming the latest craze! New Zealand Bath Tub Racing could well become a future competitive sport!
Grab yourself a spot on the Paihia waterfront to see the inaugural Bath Tub Race in the Bay. Watch eager tubers race their home-built creations around the course.
Their will be colour, creativity invention and fun. All the boats have to be built around a normal household bath and although modifications and addition are allowed, strict rules apply to make it enjoyable and affordable. Most tubbers make their tub by using a bathtub an a fiberglass hull mould. Motors must be unmodified but can be tuned by adjusting the timing.
Want to join in? Become a tubber! It's easy and affordable to set up your own boat. Check out the web site for how to build a tub, all the rules, regulations and how to build a tub.
