The Return of the Dinghy King - Bedwyr Williams

Same shit different smell or is it same smell different shit? asks Mr Williams from North Wales.

Solomon 1st April 2009
Solly's Story - Solomon is an RSPCA rescue cat. He came to live with me in May 2001. His estimated age is anywhere between nine and eleven years. He was found injured on a road in April 2001 and taken to the RSPCA centre. They tried to save his right leg but in the end had to amputate up to, but not including, the shoulder. He came to them fully housetrained, friendly but not identi-chipped. In the month that he was there, nobody claimed him. In early May I came looking for a cat that would adapt easily to life indoors. There he was, black, shaved down one side, scars just about healed and adorable. When the pen door was opened, he climbed up my shoulder. How could I resist!! Life with a three legged cat - Having had a four legged cat previously, and having lived with farm cats in the past, I can say that one leg more or less makes no huge difference. When Solly walks he limps. When he runs he doesn't limp. He is still perfectly capable of tripping me up at food time and at what he thinks is food time. He is a couch potato. He will sleep on my bed, on my sofa and, on sunny days, in a circle tracking the sun around the living room floor. He will not sleep in the lovely, soft, extra comfortable cat bed I bought for him a few years ago. Oddly enough he has taken to using the scratching post I bought for him years ago. This is a fairly recent event, so maybe there is hope for the cat bed yet. Solly watches television from time to time. He parks his bum right in front of the screen and gazes intently at whatever is going on. Nature programs and loud cartoons seem to be the favourites. All in all, I'd say here is one contented cat.

The Glasgow Flyer (West Coast Railways) arriving at Glasgow Central
The Glasgow Flyer from Llandudno Junction arriving into to Glasgow on Wednesday 13 February 2019
Departing from Llandudno Junction, Colwyn Bay, Flint, Chester, Frodsham and Warrington Bank Quay.
Departing early morning from Llandudno Junction our splendid diesel hauled heritage train - sporting its British Rail maroon livery - makes its way east towards Chester. From here we head north to Warrington and the West Coast Main Line for a scenic journey to Scotland's former European city of culture, Glasgow.
Our route takes us through some dramatic scenery, with stunning views across Morecambe Bay, followed by the mountains of the English Lake District and, after our long climb to Shap summit, we enter Border country and approach the city of Carlisle. Passing through Carlisle, our hard working diesel locomotive takes us across the border at Gretna and then tackles another hard climb up to Beattock summit, before passing through Carstairs and on through the rolling scenery of the Scottish lowlands into Glasgow.
Glasgow has much to offer with attractions ranging from a fascinating transport museum, through to the Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow Cathedral, the botanical gardens and of course the shops of what has become known as the 'style mile'. After our break we retrace our route home.

The unsolved murder of Peter Ashleigh Watts in 1976
42 years ago, 15-year-old Peter Ashleigh Watts, left his home at Woodhill Road, Colwyn Bay, leaving a note to his parents saying that he was planning to help a school friend with homework, and would return home soon.
Peter then went to purchase a ticket from his local station on the North Wales coast, to the city of Chester, where it is believed he boarded the 5:15 Holyhead to London train, but did not alight at Chester.
His family never saw him alive again.
At around 1:30am, on Monday January 19th, 1976, Peter Watts was found in a state of collapse, obviously badly injured, with broken ribs and bleeding profusely from a head wound, in the middle of the Euston Road underpass in London, about one half mile from Euston Railway station.
Ambulance driver Valerie Ann Savage said that when she arrived at the scene, she found Peter 'unconscious and exhibiting the classic symptoms of a fractured skull'.
Peter was rushed to the nearby University College Hospital by ambulance, where all attempts by medical staff to save him failed.
He died within an hour.
A subsequent post mortem examination gave the cause of Peter’s death as ‘head injuries consistent with a fall’.
It was recorded that there were no marks on Peter’s body to indicate he was pushed from the bridge nor was there evidence to suggest that had been involved in a struggle, nor was there evidence of any kind of sexual assault.
In fact, his clothing appeared to have been freshly laundered, ill-fitting and that his body had been ‘scrubbed clean’, the Coroner, Dr Howard Baderman remarked “that it was as though the teenager had just been bathed”, and “that there were no scuff marks on the clothing or fragments of dirt in the head wound”.
His watch, wallet, comb and his spectacles were missing, and were never recovered.
The verdict was recorded as being ‘murder by person, or persons unknown’.
Following the inquest, Peter’s father said; ’I think he may have been abducted, He was a friendly boy, easy with people and I don’t believe that he went of his own free will.’
Peter’s funeral service at St Pauls, was attended by senior pupils of Eirias High School - the school Peter attended - and as they left the church many of the girls wept as they followed the coffin to the waiting hearse.
Also in the congregation were senior police officers from the North Wales and Metropolitan Police forces, who heard the vicar say, “I do not think we would gain very much by reflecting now, or at any other time, on the circumstances leading to Peter’s death - we can confidently leave that to the police and the press. Here, perhaps we should pay tribute to them, for their considerable assistance and understanding during these recent sad days.”
The vicar also said that many people were also asking themselves what was happening to society at this present time.
“Why was it that so many teenagers, adolescents and elderly people too, left home on an innocent jaunt, whether to the local swimming baths, or to Chester or London and fell victim to some heinous and unsuspecting crime. It might be argued that such incidents were rare but attack, mugging and murder had become the stock in trade of so many people, that such incidents were happening with increasing frequency.”
Following the service at St Pauls, Peter’s body was cremated at Bron y Nant, Colwyn Bay.
The Murder of Peter Ashleigh Watts remains unsolved.

Meet the Artist: Jonathan Brier
Jonathan Brier is a self-taught oil painter from Yorkshire, currently residing in North Wales. He completed his Art Founation at York College, and went on to complete a degree in Illustration at Wrexham Glyndwr University. He is now a part time tutor alongside his practice as an artist.
The subject matter of his artwork concerns Memetics, and the Cultures developed by humans within society. His paintings reflect his research on decision making and self-serving agendas, holding up a mirror and presenting us with 'inconvenient' truths. He hopes that his artwork is considered as an alarm call for change.
Jonathan has been featured alongside other artists as part of the Fine Art 'Colour in Your Life' TV series by Graeme Stevenson. We've recently had the opportunity to meet Jonathan, and he showed us how he creates the textured base layer of his paintings.

Bedwyr Williams: Echt. Solo exhibition at Salzburger Kunstverein
The Salzburger Kunstverein in Salzburg, Austria, just opened a solo show with works by the Welsh artist Bedwyr Williams. The exhibition is entitled Echt, and is a co-produced project that develops throughout 2014 via Tramway (Glasgow), Mostyn (Wales), the Irish Museum of Modern Art (Dublin), and is completed at the Salzburger Kunstverein. For the presentation in Salzburg, Bedwyr Williams has conceived an exhibition that includes several video installations and sculptural works. One of them is a video performance that was filmed in summer in the Mönchsberg-Garage, a parking garage that was carved into the rock of the Mönchsberg Mountain in Salzburg, and shows the artist being carried through the tunnels by a strongman. Another work that has to do with unusual architecture is 70°. 70° refers to the iconic Hotel 70°, which once stood high on a cliff overlooking the nearby town of Colwyn Bay in Wales. The hotel was noted for its peculiar architecture where everything from the carpets to the stairs followed the 70° and 110° angles of the building. The hotel, built in 1972, was demolished in 2007 lives on in a film Bedwyr Williams made with the aid of computer modelling.
Bedwyr Williams was born in Wales in 1974. His work combines installation art, video and references to stand-up comedy. He studied at St. Martins School of Art in London and Ateliers, Arnhem, Netherlands. In 2004 he won a Paul Hamlyn Award for the Visual Arts and was nominated as one of Britain’s most promising artists by The Guardian. In 2005 he was Welsh artist-in-residence at the Venice Biennale and he was shortlisted for the Beck’s Futures prize in 2006. He represented Wales at the Venice Biennale in 2013 with his project “The Starry Messenger.”
The exhibition is accompanied by a new artist book co-produced with the touring partners and the Welsh Arts Council.
Running concurrently with Bedwyr Williams: Echt, the Salzburger Kunstverein presents Bea McMahon: Cover. Both exhibitions run until November 30, 2014.
