Yacht Sailing Improver Course on Morecambe Bay
Sailing is a great new hobby for retirement. These guys started sailing on the beginners Learn To Sail course with Bay Sea School on the north west coast of England. They've returned for the RYA Level 3 Improver course on the sea and are practising tacking and gybing the yacht in Morecambe Bay.
Yacht Sailing on Morecambe Bay
The best way to learn to sail is on a small boat. People tend to think that just means dinghy sailing. But you can also learn to sail following the RYA dinghy syllabus in a small yacht sometimes referred to as a keelboat. Bay Sea School in Morecambe is unique in the north of England teaching beginners to sail on the sea aboard a lovely Jeanneau Sun 2000. She's perfect for adult beginners because her fixed keel makes her very stable and user-friendly yet at the same time very responsive like a dinghy. Many adult beginners are reassured to learn that this yacht can't capsize!
Yacht Sailing Across Morecambe Bay
How many people have experienced sailing in this secret corner of Morecambe Bay? These lucky guys must be amongst the very few!
This is day 2 of their level 3 sailing course with Bay Sea School in Morecambe. The conditions were perfect for the sailing trip. But there are no sea charts for this area. It was 'touch & go' feeling their way up the channel to Arnside with the flood tide. You can see a few shots of Grange-over-Sands on the way too.

Yacht Sailing on Sea in North West UK
Catherine loves yacht sailing on the sea. It all started for her at Bay Sea School in Morecambe with the beginners Start Sailing course. It takes 4 days of lessons to complete all the topics on the beginners course. Catherine has returned to Bay Sea School many times to learn more about yacht sailing on their Improver courses. Here she is getting ready for her Day Skipper course. She's practising tacking which is turning the front of the boat through the wind so that the wind hits the sails on the opposite side. Nick is looking after the jib sheets for her, moving them over to the other side when she turns the boat.

Yacht Sailing Experience On Morecambe Bay
This is the first time Jane has sailed a small yacht. She was visiting Morecambe from Bournemouth and had received a gift voucher of a taster Fun Sail for her birthday. We've discovered the hidden sailor in her here!
Fast Spring Tide Of Morecambe Bay
The tide has just turned and is gathering speed as it ebbs out of Morecambe Bay around the Stone Jetty. This is a 'spring tide' which occurs roughly every two weeks. The thing to be aware of with spring tides is that more water floods in and because of that it travels faster. You can see here how disturbed the water is getting too. This is happening over the channel where the water is deeper and the tide flows the fastest. Today the wind is blowing in the opposite direction to the ebbing tide. This creates the disturbed sea state. We call it 'wind against tide'. If the wind was stronger the waves would be bigger.
Fast tide of Morecambe Bay
The tide has just turned and is starting to run out of Morecambe Bay. In stronger winds big waves would be created as the two forces oppose each other. The effect can be quite dramatic!

Morecambe Bay at Low Tide
The upper reaches of Morecambe Bay are a hidden area of outstanding natural beauty on the North West coast. Here's the view at low water. In a few hours this whole area will be covered as the tide floods in. It's not a place to venture without local knowledge. Bay Sea School have to check out where the channels are before sailing there in their small yacht. There are no marine charts for this area because the channels are constantly changing. Navigating the area relies on expert local knowledge. There are also walks across the Bay led by the Queen's Guide to the Sands, Cedric Robinson.
