Churchill, Manitoba
This past April,2015- I travelled from Thompson to Churchill on the train. The train is slow but provides a lot of relaxing time to have a few Rye and Cokes. Lot's of cool people on the train too. Kind of wish I could have stopped in Pikwitonei a little longer. I did get to spend a bit of time wondering around in Gillam which was nice. Maybe next time will be Shammattawa.
Churchill- is a town in northern Manitoba, Canada on the west shore of Hudson Bay, roughly 110 kilometres from the Manitoba/Nunavut border. It is famous for the many polar bears that move toward the shore from inland in the autumn, leading to the nickname Polar Bear Capital of the World that has helped its growing tourism industry. (Wikipedia)
Population is 813 people as of 2011.
It takes 40 hours or more to get here on Train from Winnipeg. Or you can go from Thompson which will take 16 hours on the train. The train is considered the slowest in the world and its because of travelling over the muskeg which freezes and thaws. So maybe bring a novel series to read on the way up! or you can have a few drinks during the ride up north.
In this journey I spent 3 nights in town and went out each day capturing photos and videos. I highly recommend checking out Churchill, Manitoba if ever given the opportunity.

Churchill polar bear in his day bed
I took a Tundra Buggy day tour November 11, 2010 in Churchill Manitoba. Here is one of the first of 27 polar bears I saw that day near the shore of Hudson Bay, latitude 58.44N. Churchill sits near the 60th parallel, far south of the arctic circle (66 degrees N of the equator) but within the sub-arctic. To cool off, the bears dig shallow pits called day beds and cool their body temperature down

Join me in the Arctic tracking polar bears with my camera and binoculars in the tundra and along the shores of Hudson Bay from the remote Seal River Heritage Lodge - a true wilderness location many miles from any human habitation, roads, electrical wires, boats, planes or trains. An ideal place to watch polar bears in the summer.
Churchill popular among travelers
Churchill popular among travelers
Churchill is a town in northern Manitoba in Canada, most famous for polar bears. It is the northern most seaport of the country, and is located on the west shore of the Hudson Bay. As said before, Churchill is home to a large number of polar bears and has earned the title ‘The Polar Bear Capital of the World’.
In autumn, the town witnesses the movment of animals from inland towards the shores. The tourism industry in the region is developed by focusing on the migration habits of the bears. There are modified buses called ‘Tundra buggies’ that carry tourist safely to view polar bears.
In addition to this, there are thousands of beluga whales in the waters of Churchill that make the place even more interesting. The movement of the whales into the warmer waters of the Churchill river estuary in the months of July and August is said to be a major attraction.

In this clip, our founder and director Ben Bressler tells you all about these magnificent creatures.

The polar bear, a magnificent creature that lives in an environment engulfed in ice.
0:05
For many months, these mammals survive in areas where sea ice meets water
0:11
in order to hunt seals that make up most of their diet.
0:14
In recent years the ice has been dwindling,
0:18
and with perhaps one-third less ice in these northern regions then there was just
0:21
twenty years ago,
0:22
the future is uncertain for the King of the Arctic.
0:25
I'm Ben Bressler, founder Natural Habitat Adventures, and I've always been
0:30
drawn to these animals,
0:32
so regal and proud, majestic and mystifying.
0:36
It is important to bring the story of the
0:40
mighty polar bear to the world. Living most of the year high in the Arctic,
0:44
only a handful humans have the chance to view them
0:47
in their natural habitat. On the tundra area surrounding
0:52
Churchill, the small grain port on the shores of Hudson Bay,
0:56
we have that opportunity.
1:02
The Northland is indeed a harsh environment. The creatures who live here
1:06
adapt well, and the indigenous people of the North
1:09
live a hearty, and soulful existence.
1:14
In Churchill,
1:16
as the bears await winter's freeze south of the Arctic Circle
1:19
a select group of visitors can share the realm of the polar bear.
1:24
We stay at small hotels in town, or at our specially
1:28
outfitted rolling Tundra Lodge, and head out by Polar Rovers
1:32
on daily northern safaris. We are privileged in our journey
1:36
as the Northland beckons. Young males play fight,
1:42
mothers protect their young,
1:45
and solitary giant males patrol the shores, all
1:49
waiting for winter's freeze.
1:52
after a long dark winter of fattening up, bears once again return to
1:57
Churchill. It is our sincere hope
2:00
that this annual spectacle of nature will continue
2:04
far in the future.
Hudson Bay Churchill Manitoba Iceflow July 8 2012
This starts at Prince of Wales Fort and Eskimo Island and pans across Hudson Bay. I shot this from the cairn marking three drownings. The ice is just this side of the horizon and stretches everywhere from the north to the south. Polar Bears have not come to shore yet. With this ice, they may be out there for another month. Ships will be delayed getting into the international port at Fort Churchill.
Polar bears ruin Halloween trick-or-treat plans in Canada
Polar bears were seen lumbering across the frozen tundra at Cape Churchill in the province of Manitoba on Sunday, after children were banned from going outdoors to trick or treat on Halloween due to fears that the bears could attack.
Churchill is known as the 'polar bear capital of the world' due to its high population of the furry beasts.
During the summer the polar bears move inland to hibernate through the warm weather. When autumn wanes into winter they assemble on the shores of Hudson Bay to prepare for the water to freeze over with a sheet of ice.
