Australian road trip diaries in 4K - Day 15 from Mount Gambier to the Bay of Islands
Waking up in Mac’s hotel in the very center of Mt. Gambier and taking a walk to find a cozy place for breakfast set us off to a good start of a new day. We have visited the Cave Garden, Umpherstone Sinkhole (sunken garden with viewing platforms and benches and possums roaming around) and a beautiful crater lake which turns very very blue during the winter (Australian summer) months. After that we were back on the road stopping at Bridgewater Blowholes offering a lovely scenic view and then making it directly to Warrnambool which stands almost at the beginning (or the end) of the Great Ocean Road. There we visited a Tourist Information Center where 2 lovely ladies told us all there is to know about the GOR, which spots not to miss and which will only require a quick look, what time it is better to head out in the morning to avoid the biggest crowds. They also said that widely-advertised 12 Apostoles might just be not as beautiful as the Bay of Islands which would be the closest scenic spot on the road from Warrnambool. They actually said we might be better off starting from here than we would be from Melbourne and Torquay. We have decided not to miss a chance to see a sunset at the Bay of Islands which they spoke highly of and went straight there and were not disappointed…almost nobody there, fantastic views and a magnificent sunset are what we have found there.

While heading to Port Fairy on our last day of our Great Ocean Road trip we headed to the London Bridge, the Grotto, the Bay of Islands, Warrnambool Whale Watching Platform, and finally ended up at Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve. At Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve we had the opportunity to walk around the park to look for Emus, Kangaroos, Wallabies, Echidna, and Koalas.

Australian road trip diaries in 4K - Day 16 Great Ocean Road from Warrnambool to Torquay
This day was all about the main attraction we flew to South Australia for. We surely stopped at every scenic spot that was mentioned both in the leaflet and on the signs of the road: Bay of Islands again in the morning sunlight, Bay of Martyr’s, London Bridge, the Arch, Loch Ard Gorge, the Razorback, famous 12 Apostles and another couple. Needless to say they were all worth a visit however we both agreed that yesterday’s sunset at the Bay of Islands was the best part of our GOR trip. 12 Apostles were almost disappointing with crazy crowds of what was mostly Chinese tourists. There were couple of points on the road where we had to go very slow due to the tourist buses and that was little annoying. Nevertheless the experience as a whole was good and we definitely did not regret coming to South Australia and Victoria for a couple of days. If anything, Chinese crowds prepared us for an upcoming return to Asia. We reached the end (or the beginning) of the road almost by sunset and decided to stay at Torquay for the night as locals were saying it will only take around an hour and a half to reach Melbourne next morning if we leave at the right time. Torquay was another little town which turns all dark and almost “lifeless” once the sun is down which was more than fine with us for one night we stayed.
