Bay of Pigs Invasion: Lessons Learned
On April 17, 1961, 1,511 Cuban exiles in the U.S.-backed Brigade 2506 landed on Cuba's shores at the Bahía de Cochinos--the Bay of Pigs. Their brief invasion ended on April 19 when the exiles surrendered to Fidel Castro's army, and the incident has gone down as one of the biggest fiascoes in the history of U.S. foreign policy. The U.S.-backed operation, which originated under President Dwight Eisenhower but was ultimately approved by President John F. Kennedy, called for a small invasion force, armed with the element of surprise, to trigger a general uprising in Cuba and overthrow the Castro regime. But the Cuban people did not revolt, and Castro was not surprised. Kennedy refused to commit significant U.S. military support, and the operation failed.
James M. Lindsay, CFR's senior vice president and director of studies, argues that the Bay of Pigs serves as a valuable reminder that one should be prepared for failure and plan accordingly. Had JFK thought through the possibilities of failure, Lindsay says, he might have canceled the operation or fundamentally reshaped it. Planning for failure and taking steps to minimize it are especially important when talking about decisions to use force, he argues. An analysis of a military strike on Iran, for example, would be incomplete unless it also grapples with how a military strike might fail, or create entirely new problems to handle.

In 1961, a CIA-backed invasion of Cuba threw the region into chaos and ushered in an era of cold war between the United States and this Caribbean island nation. And in all my history classes where we talked about this, I never once thought of a very simple thing: what a beautiful place it must be! And it truly is...The coral and the sea life here are spectacularly pristine!

Millions of migrating crabs are causing chaos in Cuba's Bay of Pigs
Millions of crabs are marching on Cuban roads to get to the Bay of Pigs. The migration happens every year after the first spring rains.
The crabs walk from dawn until dusk, causing havoc on the streets. Despite some getting killed by cars and predators, officials say this does not threaten the survival of the species.

The Bay of Pigs Invasion Against Castro: A Perfect Failure For the U.S.
A public domain video
The failure at the Bay of Pigs was not merely the failure of the Cuban exiles. It was a failure of United States policy, which led to a failure of United States power. Clearly the United States had the naked power to destroy Castro, but it could not ignore world opinion and use this power. It could not risk the repercussions that might follow the slaughter of Cubans and the occupation of Cuba by United States forces, could not risk the possible escalation to nuclear war. One alternative that suggested itself was indirect intervention, carried out secretly under CIA supervision.
Monday, April 17th, Bay of Pigs, Cuba. The first units of the brigade reach the beach without opposition. In Havana, Castro begins to react to the invasion. But in the first hours, the brigade pushes inland, Castro has not yet been able to bring up his tanks and heavy guns. Over the beach are 12 B-26’s providing air cover; they are attacked by the free Castro jets, five of them are shot down. The brigade’s two supply ships and its communication ship are sunk. Within a few minutes, the men on the beach have lost their air cover and their supply. By afternoon, Castro is pressing the brigade hard.
They say they have been promised air support by their American advisors. Washington says none was ever promised. At 3:45 p.m. Wednesday April 19th, resistance ends. The American planned, financed, framed and backed invasion of Cuba is now a total failure. This was probably the low point, the worst moment for John F. Kennedy and his three years in the White House. As president, he took full responsibility for this failure of United States policy, this misuse of United States power. Although the total blame was clearly not his.

Bay of Pigs Invasion!!!!
The Bay of Pigs invasion was a failed attempt by US-sponsored Cuban exiles to reverse Fidel Castro's Cuban Revolution, beginning with a military invasion of northern Cuba.
A Central Intelligence Agency-sponsored rebel group, Brigade 2506, attempted an invasion on 17 April 1961 that lasted just three days. Brigade 2506 was a counter-revolutionary military group made up mostly of Cuban exiles who had traveled to the United States after Castro's takeover, but also included some US military personnel.[6] Trained and funded by the CIA, Brigade 2506 fronted the armed wing of the Democratic Revolutionary Front (DRF) and intended to overthrow the increasingly communist government of Fidel Castro. Launched from Guatemala and Nicaragua, the invading force was defeated within three days by the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces, under the direct command of Castro.

Super tiny town by the ocean. You go here to rest and relax as there is not much else to do in this town.
The guys went scuba diving and said it was awesome while us ladies snorkelled. Beautiful views.
Loads of mosquitos here, so absolutely make sure you bring bug repellent!
Our hosts were delightful! Highly recommend their place. Breakfast was served each morning out side on the beach front. They also offer delicious homemade dinner options at their place which we had on a couple of nights after exploring the limited options in the little town and highly recommend it.
And now, this is where we say goodbye to Cuba.

CNN - Cold War 10/24 Cuba 1959-1962
Fidel Castro comes to power following the Cuban Revolution. Cuba aligns itself with the Soviet Union and the government starts nationalising American interests, resulting in the United States imposing an economic boycott, and the failed Bay of Pigs Invasion. Following the detection of Soviet medium range missiles stationed in Cuba, the United States imposes a blockade on the island, and the Soviet Union mobilises for war. The Cuban Missile Crisis is eventually resolved through secret negotiations, in which the United States and the USSR agree to withdraw missiles from Cuba and Turkey respectively. Interviewees include Fidel Castro, Walter Cronkite, Pierre Salinger and Theodore Sorensen. The pre-credits scene has interviews of Fidel Castro, Robert McNamara and Anatoly Dobrynin explaining how close they felt the world was to a nuclear holocaust.

The United States was determined to prevent Communism from gaining a foothold in the Americas.
And in 1961, President Kennedy approved a disastrous ill-fated invasion, called the Bay of Pigs.

The Cuban Missile Crisis (1962)
The Cuban missile crisis was the moment during the Cold War when the two superpowers: the United States and the Soviet Union came close to nuclear war.
Secret communications and miscommunications which played out between the White House and the Kremlin made the crisis a unique event.
