Museo Giron (The Bay of Pigs Museum at Giron) Cuba - 6th November, 2010
Views in and around the museum dedicated to the failed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba, which in Spanish is Bahía de Cochinos. The Bay of Pigs Invasion (known as La Batalla de Girón, or Playa Girón in Cuba), was an unsuccessful attempt by a CIA-trained force of Cuban exiles to invade southern Cuba, with support from US government armed forces, to overthrow the Cuban government of Fidel Castro. The plan was launched in April 1961, less than three months after John F. Kennedy assumed the presidency in the United States. The Cuban armed forces, trained and equipped by Eastern Bloc nations, defeated the exile combatants in three days. The invasion is named after the Bay of Pigs, although that is just one possible translation of the Spanish Bahía de Cochinos. The main invasion landing specifically took place at a beach named Playa Girón, located at the mouth of the bay.

Cuba is so much more than the city of Havana, and when you explore the island nation, you're never too far from a beautiful beach. But there's one stretch of sand, maybe more than any other in the world, that's had an enormous impact on international relations: Playa Giron, in The Bay of Pigs. Ashley explores the local war museum while snorkeling the aquatic depths of this historic landscape.

Cuba: Bay of Pigs: fortieth anniversary of U-S-backed invasion
Spanish/Nat
xfa
Next month, Cuba will mark the fortieth anniversary of one of the most critical events in the history of its Revolution - the U-S-backed invasion of the Bay of Pigs.
The failed attempt remains a symbol of victory for a country that has been locked in conflict with the U-S ever since.
Visiting veterans of the Bay of Pigs as well as academics are to attend a conference based on the decisive events of 1961 and, it is hoped, to set down for the sake of posterity, the reasons why it failed.
In 1961, two years after the fall of dictator, Fulgencia Batista and the rise of the Cuban Revolution, a U-S army backed force invaded the southern coast of Cuba.
Their failed attempt to take the Bay of Pigs, and from there overthrow Fidel Castro, remains to this day one of the defining glories of the Revolution and carried Cuba - U-S relations to the brink of all-out war.
This year, Cuba will pay special tribute to its defiance U-S, then under the administration of President J.F. Kennedy.
The events of the invasion began here on this beach, Playa Giron, now a tourist resort in the so called Cienaga de Zapata, three hours drive south east of the capital Havana.
Jose Ramon Fernandez, retired general, former head of the Cuban militia schools and currently president of Cuba's Olympic Committee, was at Playa Giron, the day of the invasion.

This beach and another close by, some 25 kilometers to the west, set the scene for the mid April 1961 landing of a invading brigade made up of more than 1500 men who invaded our country.
SUPER CAPTION: Jose Ramon Fernandez, retired Cuban General
Castro arrived shortly afterwards, fresh from the battlefield at nearby Playa Larga.
More than 150 Cubans were killed in action and are now feted as martyrs who gave their lives for their country.
Of the 15-hundred men who made up the invading forces, some 1200 were eventually captured alive.
How Cuba, a small island, came to defy the U-S is a controversial issue.
Often Cuba's triumph has been attributed more to an ill conceived plan of attack by the U-S than to the superiority of local armed resistance.
Jose Ramon Fernandez hopes a conference, scheduled later this month, will revise this interpretation and give more credit to where, he believes, credit is due - the Cubans.

This place was chosen for various reasons. It was a bit of earth isolated from the rest of Cuba by swampland and which was crisis crossed by no more than two roads. All this was built as a result of the Revolution, the buildings that you see and the roads which link this part of solid ground to the rest of Cuba.

A museum now stands at Playa Giron that houses weaponry and the belongings of the 156 'martyrs' who died in action at the Bay of Pigs, as well as maps and photos of the invasion underway.
U-S visitors are increasingly frequent here as more and more come to Cuba in spite of U-S imposed travel restrictions.
One Vietnam War veteran visiting for the first time confirmed a view shared by many and which Cuba wishes to alter - that the Bay of Pigs was an ill fated venture from the start, regardless of local resistance.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
This wasn't't much... a long time, I was, God, 18 probably at the Bay of Pigs so I didn't really have a grasp of what it was but you can look at where they came in. I mean, it was a very ill conceived plan.
SUPER CAPTION: Vox Pop, American tourist and Former 1st Lieutenant, 173rd Airborne, Central Highlands of Vietnam, (Vietnam war veteran)
Forty years later the Revolution in Cuba still remains and Cuba is as outspoken a critic of what it calls U-S imperialism as ever.

CUBA: DOCTOR WHO SPECIALISES IN STUDY OF ANCIENT CORPSES
Spanish/Nat
A Cuban doctor shares his family home with an unusual guest - a mummy.
Ersilio Vento spent five years rebuilding the mummy he found when carrying out exhumation work in the town of Matanzas.
The body belongs to woman who died of bronchial-pneumonia in 1872.
Ersilio Vento has become a minor celebrity in the town of Matanzas where he works as a doctor.
In his spare time Vento carries out exhumation work to satisfy his interest in archaeology.
His speciality is the study of ancient corpses.
It was through this line of work in 1965 that first brought him into contact with Josefa Ponce de Leon Heredero - a mummy.
While carrying out an exhumation in San Carlos cemetery in Matanzas, he found the mummy in a niche.
Following a series of studies the niche was closed up and Ersilio moved on to other studies.
Fifteen years later the same niche was broken into, and the mummy was vandalized.
Ersilio was called to the rescue, and spent five years rebuilding the mummy's head.
Once completed, Ersilio chose to keep his guest in the house he shares with his family.

I spent five years working on this. The hair, for example, I put in hair by hair. It is not a wig. I placed it in hair by hair. I would make holes and place the hair in.

Through the reconstruction work Ersilio managed to build a profile of the mummy's life.
Josefa Heredero died of bronchial-pneumonia in 1872, aged 57.

It has been in my bedroom, in the house where I was brought up with my parents. It has not changed anything. It is a museum piece.
SUPER CAPTION: Ersilio Vento, Doctor
Ersilio has now written two books about his work on Josefa.
The painstaking work has won him the respect of specialists the world over.
For Ersilio's wife, Josefa is a welcome addition to the household.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
I already knew about her life and I have found it easy living with her. She has never bothered me, and I have respected all of the things that must be done so that she can be reconstructed properly over the years. If he needs my help I am always willing to do what I can.
SUPER CAPTION: Alina Boffill, Wife
Meanwhile, Ersilio is continuing his work as a family doctor.
But in his spare time he can always be found amongst the niches of local cemeteries looking for another Josefa.

Bay of Pigs Invasion
The Bay of Pigs Invasion, known in Latin America as Invasión de Bahía de Cochinos (or Invasión de Playa Girón or Batalla de Girón), was a failed military invasion of Cuba undertaken by the CIA-sponsored paramilitary group Brigade 2506 on 17 April 1961. A counter-revolutionary military, trained and funded by the United States government's Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Brigade 2506 fronted the armed wing of the Democratic Revolutionary Front (DRF) and intended to overthrow the revolutionary left-wing government of Fidel Castro. Launched from Guatemala, the invading force was defeated within three days by the Cuban armed forces, under the direct command of Prime Minister Fidel Castro.
The Cuban Revolution of 1949 to 1959 had seen President Fulgencio Batista, a right-wing ally of the U.S., ousted. He was replaced by a new left-wing administration dominated by Castro, which had severed the country's formerly strong links with the U.S. by expropriating their economic assets and developing links with the Soviet Union, with whom the U.S. was then embroiled in the Cold War. The U.S. government of President Dwight D. Eisenhower was concerned at the direction which Castro's government was taking, and in March 1960, Eisenhower allocated $13.1 million to the CIA in order to plan Castro's overthrow. The CIA proceeded to organize the operation with the aid of various Cuban counter-revolutionary forces, training Brigade 2506 in Mexico. Following his election in 1960, president John F. Kennedy was informed of the invasion plan and gave his consent.
