Places to see in ( Leverkusen - Germany )
Leverkusen is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany on the eastern bank of the Rhine. To the South, Leverkusen borders the city of Cologne and to the North is the state capital Düsseldorf. On the right bank of the Rhine between Cologne and Düsseldorf, Leverkusen has only existed as an urban centre since 1975 when a group of towns and districts in the Bergisches Land were incorporated into a city.
One Leverkusen name that will be familiar to all is Bayer, the chemical and pharmaceuticals multinational, founded here in 1863 and still headquartered in the city. Many of the attractions in Leverkusen are connected in some way to Bayer, whether it’s the serene Japanese garden that the company’s CEO planted 100 years ago or the football club that was set up by a group of factory workers in 1904.
The local football club is nicknamed Die Werkself (The Company XI) and as you might guess, came together when Bayer helped a group of its employees start a sports club. Bayer Leverkusen have been playing in the Bundesliga continuously for the last 40 years.
Schloss Morsbroich in the Alkenrath district has a history beginning around the end of the 14th century, and the current Rococo palace was completed in 1775. This delightful building holds Leverkusen’s municipal museum of contemporary art, which puts on ever-changing temporary exhibitions all year round. Right by the Bayer plant in the Flittard district is a Japanese Garden rated as one of the best parks in Germany.
At Industriemuseum Freudenthaler Sensenhammer former factory on the Dhünn River you’ll step into an entirely preserved late-19th-century industrial facility. Neuland-Park was founded in time for the Landesgartenschau (State Garden Show) in 2005 on the site of the former Dhünnaue worker settlement.
In the western end of the vast Reuschenberger Wald is an animal park for European species. In Opladen, the local dye manufacturer Max Römer built himself a resplendent Neo-Renaissance villa, which he lived in from 1905 to 1923. Not long after that it became Opladen’s town hall and then the seat of the British military command after the war.
At Nobelstraße 78 in Wiesdorf you can get a glimpse of life in one of the worker settlements founded by Bayer AG at the start of the 20th century. The museum is one of the pairs of semi-detached houses built by the factory especially to house its employees, in what were known as “colonies”, which even had their own Bayer-brand department store and are now a German historic monument.
On a historic 60,000-square-meter Ophoven estate is an educational park and museum where kids can get in touch with nature and find out about renewable energy. Wherever you go in Leverkusen you should be able to spot this 72.45-metre water tower rising in the Bürrig district.
Another fixture on Bayer’s cityscape is the Bayer Cross, the company’s logo rendered in lights above the factory in a sign measuring 51 metres across. The Schiffbrücke Wuppermündung is a unique pontoon bridge, with a walkway supported by three boats: These are Einigkeit (Unity), a clipper dating to 1907, Recht (Law), an eel trawler from 1924 and finally, Freiheit (Freedom), a flat-bottomed, Dutch-style tjalk dating back more than 100 years.
Some 600 trees and 500 shrubs were planted at Stammheim, and were mainly sourced from the nursery at the Cologne Botanical Garden. If you’re out and about in the centre of Leverkusen, chances are you’ll find yourself at this mall, which opened in 2010. The building is a sight to behold from the outside as it is crowned by a 5,000-square-metre glass rotunda, containing the town hall and the municipal library.

Bayer building, Germany
Bayer AG is a German chemical and pharmaceutical company founded in Barmen (today a part of Wuppertal), Germany in 1863. It is headquartered in Leverkusen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany and well known for its original brand of aspirin. Bayer's primary areas of business include human and veterinary pharmaceuticals; consumer healthcare products; agricultural chemicals and biotechnology products; and high value polymers. The company was 150 years old on 1 August 2013.
Bayer AG was founded in Barmen (today a part of Wuppertal), Germany in 1863 by Friedrich Bayer and his partner, Johann Friedrich Weskott.
Bayer's first major product was acetylsalicylic acid (originally discovered by French chemist Charles Frederic Gerhardt in 1853), a modification of salicylic acid or salicin, a folk remedy found in the bark of the willow plant. By 1899, Bayer's trademark Aspirin was registered worldwide for Bayer's brand of acetylsalicylic acid, but because of the confiscation of Bayer's US assets and trademarks during World War I by the United States – and the subsequent widespread usage of the word to describe all brands of the compound —, Aspirin lost its trademark status in the United States, France, and the United Kingdom. It is now widely used in the US, UK, and France for all brands of the drug. However in over 80 other countries, such as Canada, Mexico, Germany, and Switzerland, it is still a registered trademark of Bayer.
In 1904, the Bayer company introduced the Bayer cross as its corporate logo. Because Bayer's aspirin was sold through pharmacists and doctors only, and the company could not put its own packaging on the drug, the Bayer cross was imprinted on the actual tablets, so that customers would associate Bayer with its aspirin.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen Fußball GmbH, also known as Bayer 04 Leverkusen [ˌbaɪ̯ɐ ˈleːvɐˌkuːzn̩], Bayer Leverkusen, Leverkusen or simply Bayer, is a German football club based in Leverkusen, North Rhine-Westphalia.[3] The club plays in the Bundesliga, the top tier of the German football league system, and hosts matches at the BayArena.[4][1]
The club was founded in 1904 by employees of the German pharmaceutical company Bayer, whose headquarters are in Leverkusen and from which the club draws its name. It was formerly the best-known department of TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen, a sports club whose members also participate in athletics, gymnastics, basketball and other sports including the RTHC Bayer Leverkusen (rowing, tennis and hockey). In 1999 the football department was separated from the sports club and is now a separate entity formally called Bayer 04 Leverkusen GmbH.
On 27 November 1903, Wilhelm Hauschild wrote a letter – signed by 170 of his fellow workers – to his employer, the Friedrich Bayer and Co., seeking the company's support in starting a sports club.[7] The company agreed to support the initiative, and on 1 July 1904 Turn- und Spielverein Bayer 04 Leverkusen was founded.[7] On 31 May 1907, a separate football department was formed within the club.[7] In the culture of sports in Germany at the time, there was significant animosity between gymnasts and other types of athletes. Eventually this contributed to a split within the club: on 8 June 1928, the footballers formed a separate association – Sportvereinigung Bayer 04 Leverkusen – that also included the handball and fistball players, athletics, and boxing, while the gymnasts carried on as TuS Bayer 04 Leverkusen. SV Bayer 04 Leverkusen took with them the club's traditional colours of red and black, with the gymnasts adopting blue and yellow.
Through this period, and into the 1930s, SV Bayer 04 Leverkusen played third and fourth division football.[8] In 1936, they earned promotion to the second highest class of play of the period.[8] That was also the year that the club wore the familiar Bayer cross for the first time.[8] They made their first appearance in upper league play in 1951, in the Oberliga West and played there until 1956, after which they were relegated. SV Bayer 04 Leverkusen would not return to the upper leagues until 1962, just one season before the formation of Germany's new professional league, the Bundesliga. The next year saw the club in the Regionalliga West, tier II, where their performances over the next few seasons left them well down the league table.
SV Bayer 04 Leverkusen made something of a breakthrough in 1968 by winning the division title, but was unable to advance through the playoff round to the first division. The club was relegated again in 1973, but made a quick return to what was now called the 2. Bundesliga after just one season spent in the third division. Four years later, the club handily secured a place in the Bundesliga to start to play there in the 1979–80 season.
By the mid-1980s, SV Bayer 04 Leverkusen had played its way into the upper half of the league table and was well-established there by the end of the decade. It was during this time, in 1984, that the two-halves of the club that had parted ways over a half century earlier were re-united as TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen e.V. The new club took red and white as its colours.
In addition to becoming an established Bundesliga side, the club earned its first honours with a dramatic win in the 1988 UEFA Cup. Down 0–3 to Espanyol after the first leg of the final, Bayer Leverkusen drew even in the return match and then captured the title on penalty kicks, 3–2.[9][10]
That same year, long-time Bayer Leverkusen executive Reiner Calmund became the general manager of the club. This is regarded as one of the most important moves in the club's history, as Calmund ushered in a decade and a half of the club's greatest successes through shrewd, far-sighted player acquisitions.
After the German reunification in 1990, Reiner Calmund was quick to sign East German stars Ulf Kirsten, Andreas Thom and Jens Melzig. The three players would become instant crowd favourites, and make significant contributions to the team. Calmund also established groundbreaking contacts in Brazilian football, befriending Juan Figer, one of Brazil's most powerful player agents. Over the next few years, budding superstars, such as Jorginho and Paulo Sérgio, joined the team, as did Czech star Pavel Hapal. The club also signed charismatic players, such as Bernd Schuster, and Rudi Völler, helping to ensure the team's popularity and growing success.

Champions League: Monaco win 1-0 at Bayer Leverkusen in Group C.
Lucas Ocampos' tap-in guided Monaco to a 1-0 Champions League victory at Bayer Leverkusen to blow Group C wide open.
The Argentine winger latched onto Nabil Dirar's cross to cap a fine counter-attack that allowed Monaco to frustrate the hosts, who dominated territory and possession.
Leverkusen could have sealed top spot and their first-ever seeding for the Champions League round of 16 with victory over their stuttering French visitors.
Monaco arrived in Germany without a win in four matches, but quickly set about denying the hosts safe passage to the next round.
Ocampos' winning goal leaves Leverkusen top of the Group C standings on nine points, but Monaco now only trail by one: so either side can still top the pool with one round of fixtures remaining.
Monaco host Zenit on Tuesday, December 9, with Leverkusen travelling to Benfica, with the matches now effectively a shoot-out for top spot.
Monaco boss Leonardo Jardim's plan to frustrate Leverkusen into a mistake worked perfectly, with the possession-hogging hosts unable to convert their control.
Monaco's victory also dumped Group C's bottom side Benfica out of European competition altogether for the campaign, after the Portuguese club lost out 1-0 at Zenit St Petersburg in Wednesday's early kick-off.
Lars Bender blasted against the bar for Leverkusen after 26 minutes in the only real chance of a tetchy first-half, the teams turning round in stalemate with the hosts by far the more frustrated.
Germany's 19-cap holding midfielder left Monaco stopper Danijel Subasic dumbfounded as his effort rebounded off the frame of his goal, but that chance aside the opening exchanges proved hugely frustrating for the home side.
Monaco had clearly pitched up with the intention of squeezing their hosts through a regimented rearguard effort.
Leverkusen dominated territory and possession in that first-half, but failed to capitalise and match that control with clear-cut scoring chances.
Aymen Abdennour and Ricardo Carvalho marshalled not only Monaco's central defence but also the visitors' entire framework, halting Leverkusen at all but every turn.
The second-half continued in much the same vein as the first, but as time ticked by Monaco gained increasing confidence.
All that patience and diligence came to fruition then, when the visitors broke on the counter and Dirar found Ocampos in the 72nd minute who turned in and sparked jubilant French celebrations.
Toni Kroos Goal Bayer Leverkusen vs FC Bayern München 0:1 05.10.2013 HD
Toni Kroos Goal Bayer Leverkusen vs FC Bayern München 0 1 HD
Bayern Munich walked into the BayArena and absolutely battered Bayer Leverkusen, but unfortunately for the visitors, the scoreboard didn't show it. They couldn't capitalize on their slew of chances and their defense broke down once, which was enough for Bayer to snatch a point in a 1-1 draw with the champions to stay -- along with Borussia Dortmund -- just one point back of Bayern at the top of the Bundesliga table.
After a cagey opening, Toni Kroos put Bayern in front with a 29th minute strike, but much of the credit should go to Franck Ribery. The Frenchman got free down the left and worked his way down to the endline before picking out Kroos in the center. Kroos still had work to do, but Ribery had done the hard part and when Kroos slammed the ball into the top of the net, Bayern had themselves a 1-0 lead.
The champions' lead only lasted two minutes, though. Manuel Neuer made a mess of a cross and found himself out of position when Sebastian Boenisch followed with a shot. As a result, Neuer was only able to get a finger to it, which left the rebound in front of goal for Sidney Sam to bury in the gaping goal.
Sam's goal ignited the BayArena, but it didn't do much to wake up the home side. They struggled to create chances the rest of the way and were most alive when kicking Bayern players or yelling at the referee.
Meanwhile, Bayern were superb, at least until they got into the final third. They dominated possession and had 27 shots to Bayer's five, but their finishing was poor, their luck non-existent and Bernd Leno was tremendous to keep them from finding a winner.
Despite Bayern's dominance, they nearly lost the match when Ribery ran over Jens Hegeler on one of the home side's few forays forward, but the referee chose not to award a penalty and Bayern would get at least a point in a match when they probably deserved three.

Bayer Leverkusen vs Atletico Madrid 2-4 Highlights & All Goals - 02/21/2017
Bayer Leverkusen 2-4 Atletico Madrid Highlights 2017 & All Goals - 02/21/2017
Atletico Madrid scored four away goals to take charge of their Champions League last-16 tie against Bayer Leverkusen.
Saul Niguez gave the visitors the lead with a stunning strike, picking the ball up on the right before cutting inside and curling a left-footed shot into the top corner.
Antoine Griezmann doubled their advantage from Kevin Gameiro's pass after woeful defending by Leverkusen skipper Omer Toprak.
Wendell struck his own crossbar in clearing Felipe Luis' cross and home goalkeeper Bernd Leno twice saved well from Griezmann as Leverkusen were fortunate to go in at the break just two goals behind.
Karim Bellarabi pulled one back for Leverkusen early in the second half by finishing off a slick team move, but Gameiro's penalty restored Atletico's two-goal advantage before Stefan Savic's own goal reduced arrears once again.
Substitute Fernando Torres further strengthened Atletico's grip on the tie when he nodded in a late fourth.
The return leg takes place at the Vicente Calderon on Wednesday, 15 March.
Another quarter-final for Atletico?
Diego Simeone's Atletico have real Champions League pedigree, finishing as runners-up both last season and in 2014, and reaching the quarter-finals in between.
The La Liga side dominated the first half at the BayArena and would have been out of sight but for Leno's crucial saves from Griezmann.
On both occasions Leverkusen were totally exposed at the back, but the France international's low strikes were kept out by the legs of the German.
Despite the misses, Griezmann did manage to get on the scoresheet, as did former Liverpool and Chelsea striker Torres, who came off the bench to notch his 41st goal in European competitions.
Much to learn for Leverkusen
Leverkusen finished third in the Bundesliga last season but are struggling this term, 20 points behind leaders Bayern Munich.
They did, however, emerge through the Champions League group stages unbeaten.
Manager Roger Schmidt fielded 17-year-old midfielder Kai Havertz for his first Champions League start, making him the first player born after the 1999 final to start in the competition.
Despite three assists in his last five games, Havertz struggled to make an impression but 20-year-old team-mate Julian Brandt did show his promise with some impressive runs.
Slovenia international Kevin Kampl came close to netting for the hosts in the opening period, but his curled effort was kept out well by Miguel Angel Moya.
Bellarabi's first-time finish early in the second half from Benjamin Henrich's cutback gave the 2002 runners-up hope, while their second goal arrived when Moya spilled a cross onto team-mate Savic's leg and into his own net.
On another night two goals and 62% possession could have seen Leverkusen emerge with the win, but some self-destructive defending ultimately cost them dear.
