Sehemy Home Old Cairo
Bayt Al-Suhaymi (House of Suhaymi) is an old Ottoman era house museum in Cairo, Egypt. It was originally built in 1648 by Abdel Wahab el Tablawy along the Darb al-Asfar, a very prestigious and expensive part of Islamic Cairo. In 1796 it was purchased by Sheikh Ahmed as-Suhaymi whose family held it for several subsequent generations. The Sheikh greatly extended the house from its original through incorporating neighbouring houses into its structure.
The house is built around a sahn in the centre of which there is a small garden with plants and palm trees. From here several of the fine mashrabiya windows in the house can be seen. Today the house is a museum which foreign visitors can tour for 35 Egyptian pounds (15 for students). Much of the marble floor work, wooden furniture, and ceiling decor is still intact.

Beat El Sehemy Cairo Egypt; The Old Ottoman Era House Museum
Beat El Sehemy, Cairo, Egypt - Visit Egypt attractions and see the old places.
There are different hidden gems in Cairo, Egypt, which a lot of people know nothing about and Beat El Sehemy is among the list since not all those who visit Egypt know about it. Beat El Sehemy is found in El Moez street, so you will not only come to it, but will go through the old streets of Egypt as well.
Beat El Sehemy, which means El Sehemy house, was not built by Sheikh Ahmed As Suhaymi, whose family lived there for several years and thus the name was given to the place when it was transformed to a museum, but it was built by Abdel Wahab El Tablawy back in the era when El Darb El-Asfar - where this is now located - was a very prestigious and expensive area in Medieval Cairo.
With the different transformations that were done by El Suhaymi to Beat El Sehemy, it is now considered a good place to go and visit in order to see the several fine mashrabiya windows which were famous at the old time of Egypt.
We highly recommend this place to visit in Egypt because you will walk through an old house of those ancient Egyptians who used to live in an expensive area. It is all about walking through the rooms and getting the chance to see the small garden found in the middle of the place.
Beat El Sehemy entrance fee to have a tour inside the place is 35 Egyptian pounds for the foreigners and half the amount for students.
This place is very interesting as part of Egypt's old architecture and history, but at the same time it is also a recommended place for those who want to enjoy an Arabian night in an atmosphere related to the old Islamic areas of the city, because it offers an area to sit and enjoy the weather and the old shows and oriental music by night. These shows are for free, you will just walk in and out whenever you want, you will only pay if you are going to sit and order something.
We highly recommend this place because it will give you the chance to see how people used to live in the old days, which is considered really interesting in order to spot out the differences and see how things have changed over the passage of time. This is also a good example for the Islamic houses which were built at the old Egyptian time; you might find it dusty, but it is still good enough to witness the difference.
We always recommend having a tour guide with you because there is a story behind that house which he/she will be able to tell. It is not much recommended to get a guide once you are there, because sometimes they take much money than they are supposed to, so always ask before they walk you through, tell you the story, and then surprise you with the sum of money they want.
Sometimes getting some information from the internet is not that useful, so if you are not willing to hire a tour guide, you could either buy something that will tell the story or else buy a book about Egypt that carries enough information about all the places you are going to visit during your stay in general.
On the same day of visiting Beit El Suhaymi, we recommend that you go through Qalaoon's mosque. Getting the ticket is a plus because it will give you the permission to enter different places and houses in this area and see how they look like from the inside.
Egyptian people are very helpful in these areas but whenever you come to buy anything, try to bargain because it always works since the price they offer at the beginning is not always the real one.
There are different things to do in Cairo, Egypt since it is now safe to travel to Egypt but with taking the needed precautions and care. Beat El Sehemy is an old home which you will get the chance to see how the old Egyptians used to live in this area, but of course it has been renovated.
Beat El Sehemy and El Moez street are also part of Khan El Khalili which is the famous old Egyptian area with the narrow corridors that bring you to an Egyptian market with silver and gold accessories as well as different kinds of souvenirs.
Egyptian people themselves tend to visit this area to buy some of their needs since craftsmen there are talented and the prices are considered acceptable when compared with the rest of the shops found in the middle of the city.
There are different things to do in Cairo when you visit this area, such as visiting the mosques in El Moez street and have a walk through the street in general and eventually you could get to see the rest of Khan El Khalili area
There are several things to visit in Egypt as well in addition to this area, such as visiting the Citadel of Salah El Din , going to the pyramids of Egypt , and you could even visit Cairo Tower
Bayt Al Suhaymi: Restoration Project // بيت السيحيمي: مشروع الترميم
The documentation, restoration and conservation project of Bayt Al Suhaymi Area officially began in 1994 and lasted until the end of the decade. It aimed to restore and preserve a monument that embodied heritage and presented a great example of architectural and craft traditions that are distinctly local to the area.
Nadim Foundation aims to document the project’s archive by providing in-depth information on how the project was carried out, and what hurdles were faced – making it accessible to the public for the first time.

منزل الست وسيلة بيت الشعر1 1 El Set Wasela House
An ancient archaeological house located behind Al-Azhar Mosque in Cairo. The house is characterized by the beauty of the design and the splendor of the building, and represents a unique example of the architecture of homes in the Ottoman era. The Cultural Development Fund of the Egyptian Ministry of Culture is currently under the ownership of the Supreme Council of Antiquities. It is an archaeological and cultural shrine in the so-called House of Poetry.
In 1646 AD the brothers Abdul Haq and Lutfi Oulad Mohammed Al-Kanani. They built a house on Atfah al-Aini Street next to the house of Abdul Rahman al-Harawi and a few meters from Al-Azhar Mosque. Where the foundation text refers to the cover of the roof of the seat of this house, the origin of which is Haji Abdul-Haq and the sister of Lutfi Oulad Muhammad al-Kanani in 1074 AH / 1664 AD Then took the ownership of the house in the move until the key signed in the hands of the six means Khatoon Bint Abdullah Al-Bayda Matouqa She was the last inhabitant of the house and was therefore known by her name and attributes.
Recently, the Minister of Culture issued a decision to allocate this house to be the headquarters of the House of Arabic Poetry within the creativity centers of the Cultural Development Fund, through which it offers many cultural and literary events. The Fund provided the house with all the necessary equipment, which guarantees him to perform his creative mission to serve Arabic poetry and literature in general.
Who are the six means?
The six ways of Khatun, who died on May 4, 1835 AD, were not recorded in history as one character, but it seems that she was a powerful lady in the neighborhood. The parents kept a father for the grandfather of her name, and became aware of the magnificent archaeological house.
El Nile Ensemble @ Beit El-Seheimy
Sufi and folk music from Upper and Lower Egypt performed by El-Nil Ensemble in Beit El-Seheimy. In this song, my favourite member of the ensemble sings they are not like us, nor are we like them... the pain they caused us is enough.
Beit El-Seheimy is an old Ottoman era house museum in Cairo, Egypt. It was originally built in 1648 by Abdel Wahab el Tablawy in a very prestigous and expensive part of Medieval Cairo. In 1796 it was purchased by Sheikh Ahmed as-Suhaymi whose family held it for several subsequent generations. As-Suhaymi greatly extended the house from its original through encorporating neighbouring houses into its structure. This included the incorporation of the former house-turned-shrine of Shaykh Nasruddine, a local Imam whose green tomb can be seen and accessed from El-Darb El-Asfar, the alleyway on which the house lies.
The house is built around a sahn in the centre of which there is a small garden with plants and palm trees. From here several of the fine mashrabiya windows in the house can be seen. El Nile Ensemble @ Beit El-Seheimy
Sufi and folk music from Upper and Lower Egypt performed by El-Nil Ensemble in Beit El-Seheimy. In this mawwal, the singer sings in praise of Ramadan and the good nature associated with the holy month. With El-Nil Ensemble and Ya Zare' El Maaruf, Ramadan Tayeb (O! you who plants good, Ramadan is good natured).
In Arabic music, the mawwāl (موال; plural: mawāwīl, مواويـل) is a traditional genre of vocal music that is usually presented before the actual song begins. It is characterized by spelling vowel syllables longer than usual. In any mawwal, the music begins with a layali (ليالي), in which the listener will hear the common phrase Ya Ain Ya Lail (يا عين يا ليل), which means Oh eye, Oh night.
Mawwal is sung in colloquial rather than classical Arabic. The genre has links to historical forms of Arabic poetry and music and the singer demonstrates his skill with non-metrical melodic improvisation on a poetic narrative text and melody.
