Mount Maunganui is located atop a sand bar that connects Mauao to the mainland, a geographical formation known as a tombolo. Because of this formation, the residents of Mount Maunganui have both a harbour beach (Pilot Bay) and an ocean beach with great surf, within a short distance. At the base of Mauao, the distance between the harbour and ocean side is a couple of blocks.

The ocean beach has Mauao or Mount Maunganui at its western end, and a man made land bridge connecting Moturiki Island at its eastern end

오늘은 제 아들 Brian이 하고 있는 Water Polo(수구)운동의 아침 훈련(Morning Practice) 영상입니다.

[앵커]
뉴질랜드 수영계에서 유망주로 꼽히는 동포 수영 선수가 있습니다.

또래 선수들보다 키는 작지만 끈질긴 노력으로 우수한 성적을 내고 있는데요.

뉴질랜드 주니어 수영계의 작은 거인, 이연수 양을 만나보시죠.

출발 신호에 맞춰 물에 뛰어드는 선수들.

나비의 모습과 닮았다 해서 붙여진 접영 경기가 한창이다.

뉴질랜드에서 수영으로 내로라하는 10대들이 한데 모인 자리다.

그중 100m, 200m 종목에서 연이어 가장 먼저 반환점을 도는 선수가 있다.

남들보다 한 뼘이나 작은 키로 시상대의 가장 높은 자리에 10번이나 오른, 동포 이연수 양이다.

좋은 결과를 얻게 돼 정말 기뻐요. 그동안 힘들어도 열심히 훈련했는데, 그 생각하면 더 보람 있고 행복해요.

지금은 뉴질랜드 수영계의 유망주지만 연수 양이 처음 수영을 시작할 때만 해도 목표는 소박했다.

고질병이던 아토피와 천식에 도움이 된다는 말에 수영을 시작했다.

수영에 별다른 뜻이 없던 동양인 소녀가 뉴질랜드 수영계에서 큰일을 낸 것은 만 11살 때다.

자유형 200M 종목에서 뉴질랜드 신기록을 세운 것이다.

수영을 하면 아무래도 폐활량도 좋아지고 해서 천식에 도움이 된다는 얘기를 듣고 처음 시키게 됐습니다. 본인이 많이 힘들었을 텐데 좋은 결과가 있어서 저는 너무 고맙죠.

하지만 좋은 성적을 내는 일이 항상 즐거운 것만은 아니었다.

아직 어린 소녀에게 1등에 대한 부담감은 때때로 시합을 망치는 요인이 됐다.

반드시 성과를 발휘해야 할 때, 누군가 연수에게 '이번에 좋은 성적을 내야 한다'고 말하면 연수가 겁을 먹는 경향이 있어요.

또, 키가 클수록 유리한 수영에서 160cm라는 아담한 키는 연수 양이 극복해야 할 숙제였다.

이 나라의 아이들하고 경쟁하기에는 굉장히 많이 작은 키거든요. 근데 본인이 그런 아이들하고 경쟁할 때 자기한테 부족한 점을 다른 걸로 메꾸기 위해서 다른 아이들보다 배는 더 노력을 많이 하는 것 같아요.

한 시간 넘게 보는 수영장 밑바닥이 지겨울 법도 한데 친구들과 즐겁게 운동하는 모습은 영락없는 10대 소녀다.

주력 종목을 따로 정하지 않고 자유형과 접영을 넘나드는 연수 양의 훈련.

가능성이 무궁무진한 어린 선수... (중략)

Swimming at Bay Wave Mount Maunganui

Welcome to GoPro kids adventures, in this channel we will show you many locations and activities you can do with your kids in New Zealand. As a dad sometimes I do struggle to get my kids out of the computer, video games and technology in general. So, I decided to get the most of our adventures and share with you.


To make this video we spend a whole day swimming at Bay Wave located in Mount Maunganui, New Zealand. It is located in the Bay Fair area close to shopping centre.

bay Wave count with many swimming pools for all ages plus a big slide, also during the weekend they offer waves in the main pool...cool hey!!
