Ancient Mandu, India: Rupamati's Pavilion and Baz Palace
Baz Bahadur was the last independent ruler of Mandu and built a beautiful lake and palace for his favorite concubine Rupamati, next to his own palace.
Rumati was a shepherdess and agreed to come to Mandu only if she could view the sacred Narmada River. Baz built, she came and they lived happily (I guess) until the Moghul emperor Akbar marched on Mandu in 1561. Baz fled, Rupamati poisoned herself, end of story.

Mandu, due to its strategic position and natural defences, was an important place with a rich and varied history. It was an important military outpost and its military past can be gauged by the circuit of the battlemented wall, which is nearly 37 km (23 mi) and is punctuated by 12 gateways. The wall encloses a large number of palaces, mosques, Jain temples of 14th century and other buildings. The oldest mosque dates from 1405; the finest is the Jama Masjid or great mosque, a notable example of Pashtun architecture. The marble-domed tomb of this ruler is also magnificent

Baz Bahadur Palace
* Baz Bahadur Palace is one of the prominent tourist attraction at Mandu tourist destination.
* Its name is derived from Mandu ruler Baz Bahadur who was fond of music and art and was in deep love of his wife Roopmati.
* During his rule time, Mandu was at its peak.
* Palace is located on hill slope with scenic surrounding.
* It is about 95 kms west of Indore city and easily accessible by road.
* Baz Bahadur palace is a interesting blend of Rajput and Mughal architecture and style.
* This palace was actually built far before Baz Bahadur came into power.
* Inscription at the palace entrance gate describes its construction to Sultan Nasiruddin Shah in AD 1508-09.
About Baz Bahadur
* Miyan Bayezid Baz Bahadur Khan was the last sultan of Malwa, who reigned from 1555 to 1562.
* He succeeded his father, Shuja'at Khan.
* He is known for his romantic liaison with Roopmati.
* Baz Bahadur as sultan did not bother to look after his kingdom nor did he maintain a strong army, being devoted to the arts and to his paramour.
* The Mughals defeated him and captured his Hindu queen Roopmati, who killed herself at this turn of events.
* In 1561, Akbar's army led by Adham Khan and Pir Muhammad Khan attacked Malwa and defeated Baz Bahadur in the battle of Sarangpur on 29 March 1561.
* One of the reasons for Adham Khan's attack seems to be his lust for Rani Roopmati.
* Rani Roopmati poisoned herself upon hearing of the fall of Mandu.
* Baz Bahadur fled[1] to Khandesh.
* Akbar soon recalled Adham Khan and made over command to Pir Muhammad, who attacked Khandesh and proceeded up to Burhanpur but was soon defeated by a coalition of three powers: Miran Mubarak Shah II of Khandesh, Tufal Khan of Berar and Baz Bahadur.
* Pir Muhammad died while retreating.
* The confederate army pursued the Mughals and drove them out of Malwa, and thus Baz Bahadur regained his kingdom for a brief period.
* In 1562, Akbar sent another army led by Abdullah Khan which finally defeated Baz Bahadur and Baaz Bahadur died.[2]
* Bahadur's capital was Mandu (now in Madhya Pradesh), which then became an important city in the Mughal Empire.
* The Jahaz Mahalis located in Mandu.[1]
