Bentley Road to Okanagan Lake Park - South Bound view

Located on Hwy 97, immediately north of Summerland between Bentley Road and Okanagan Lake Park. 2008 - 2010
The project involved widening a 7km stretch of Hwy 97 to four lanes and constructing 3km of frontage roads to consolidate local accesses. In addition to the improved mobility and reduced congestion, motorists also benefit from safety improvements, including wider paved shoulders, rumble strips and roadside barriers. And all this while protecting valuable wild goat habitat too.

Construction crews were faced with a significant challenge in October 2008 when a large fissure was discovered on a rock slope above the highway just north of Summerland. The highway was closed for 19 days while the site was stabilized.

Approximately 55,000 cubic metres of rock had to be blasted from the site.

Saturday morning, July 18 Cindy and I were on a swing through the southern interior. Starting in Westbank filming artists (video to come) then Hardy Falls and Penticton before going to Osoyoos.
There was no hint of any extraordinary event to take place that Saturday.
Our YOLO message is about that in a way, live a good life to the fullest, You Only Live Once and what the next minute let alone the next day brings can not be told.

Vancouver Island Boondocking Free Camping On Vancouver Island Elk Bay Recreation Site - We explore a bit of Campbell River and set off to the Elk Bay Rec Site to enjoy some free oceanside camping.

Boondocking and free camping on Vancouver Island can be hard to come by unless you know where to look. Lucky for us, we came across the Backroad Mapbook which you can find here:

This map book details all the rec sites, trails, kayak routes and dispersed camping you can imagine. If paid itself off in the first night we owned it and is a must-have for people looking to boondock on Vancouver Island.

Within the Sayward Forest, Elk Bay is one of only two developed recreation sites with access to the ocean. There are two parts to the site: the main camping area with the boat launch and a smaller, two unit site located on the other side of the creek. There are great panorama vistas looking across Discovery Passage to Quadra and Sonora Islands and the mountains beyond.

Driving Directions:From Campbell River, head north on Highway 19. Turn right just after Roberts Lake, onto the Elk Bay road (gravel) - about 33 km from town. Drive 11.3 km from the highway and you'll come to the junction of the Stella Lake road. Turn right, follow it for another 3.2 km and the road will split (log dump area straight ahead). Make a sharp right and carry on for another 0.7 km - you should reach the entrance to the main part of the site. The entrance to the small site is another 400 metres down the road.

We are Maddie and Mike and we are setting out on the adventure of a lifetime this summer. Join us as we hit the road and pursue our passions. We are artists and aspiring videographers/photographers who are using our passion for filmmaking to document our lives in preparation for a massive lifestyle change.

Now that we are living in an RV full time while traveling North America, we plan on uploading more often (pending our geographical location and availability of wifi).

We are full-time traveling artists and spend our free time relaxing in nature and exploring. Moving into an RV and traveling has been a dream of ours for a long time. We turned that dream into a goal and worked our asses off to save money, build a viable source of income on the road and minimize our possessions. We also reflected on what truly mattered in our lives. The apartment, cars, clothing and consumer products were actually consuming us! After months of purging and downsizing, we finally moved into our RV on May 15. We stayed for 2 months in an RV in Edmonton AB and saved on rent while continuing to work. This allowed the final push of saving money prior to taking off into the great unknown.

Now we are chasing adventure, seeking out new opportunities to display our art and make money while never forgetting to stop and smell the roses.

We are often faced with questions and comments regarding how we afford to live on the road in an RV. The truth is, saving enough money to take off was one of the easier parts of our preparation. Adjusting our daily and monthly habits to be as frugal as possible, learning how to be comfortable with less and developing a method to earn money from virtually anywhere were the real challenges. This lifestyle is addition by subtraction. Letting go of the routine, letting go of many of your possessions and letting go of the fear holding you back from such a big lifestyle change will grant you the freedom to actually LIVE your life. It may not be for everyone but life in an RV is definitely for us!

I went to a Medieval night at the Gasthaus with my friends and I had the time of my life... The food was FABULOUS and so was my company! It was wunderbar!!! I can's wait to take my darling Pamela back there to meet all my friends :-)
