Hands Across the Sand June 25th, 2011 at Seaside Florida with Founder Dave Rauschkolb
Hundreds gathered to take a stand, hold hands, and draw a line in the sand in Seaside, Florida with Hands Across the Sand founder Dave Rauschkolb.
Hands Across the Sand is a movement made of people of all walks of life and crosses political affiliations and the borders of the world. This movement is not about politics — it is about the protection of our coastal economies, oceans, marine wildlife and fisheries. The accidents that continue to happen in offshore oil drilling are a threat to all of the above. Expanding offshore oil drilling is not the answer; embracing Clean Energy is.

BELGIUM: SAND SCULPTURE FESTIVAL PREPARATIONS
English/Nat
The Belgium seaside town of Zeebrugge is getting ready for its annual, month-long sand sculpture festival, due to start on Saturday.
This year's theme is the Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire.
Digging in.
Sixty sculptors and architects took part in constructing the massive sand sculpture, which is 13 metres wide and 60 metres high.
The sculptors - most of them students from Europe and the United States - spent one month to build the structure.
The sand used was a mixture of regular beach sand and river sand.
The latter has an angular grain - much better for constructing large structures.
The sculptors used a lot of sand - five and a half thousand cubic metres to be precise - weighing a total of around eight million kilogrammes.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Why, because sand is beautiful - you have so many shapes when you are working sand and it is a very fast medium as well - you can have a shape very fast with sand, normally with marble it cost a lot of time, to think of Michaelangelo - it took him a year to make a nice sculpture and we do it here in two weeks' time. Another thing about sand is that it is very unpredictable - you never know where the sand will go to, you can guide the sand but in the end it will determine what kind of shape you are going to make.
SUPER CAPTION: Angelique Werner - Association of Sculptors
The sculptors didn't use old-fashioned buckets and spades to create their marvel.
First, the sand was cast into moulds - layer by layer.
By wetting and tapping the sand, each layer was compacted.
The second phase was the actual shaping of the pile of sand.
To carve the sculpture, the moulds were taken away one by one, starting at the top.
The desired shape was then carved in the compacted sand - with the remaining moulds serving as scaffolding.
And so on all the way to the bottom.
Some brave sculptors went out of their way to add special finishing touches to the creation..
SOUNDBITE: (English)
It was quite a challenge and also a technical challenge and we enjoyed it very much. We worked together with a stuntman and we incorporated the fire for the first time this year and it will be very very spectacular.
SUPER CAPTION: Marion Katerberg, Artistic leader
For three years now, the annual sand sculpting event in Zeebrugge has been attracting tourists from all around the world.
The last two years, the panoramic scenes featured a medieval battle scene and the Belgium arts...

Seaside Beach, FL 32459
Seaside is truly the only one of its kind. The moment you eyes first see this community you know you are right where you belong. This small town has everything to offer, right at your fingertips. Its outdoor amphitheatre, art galleries, gourmet food, and boutiques leave you wanting more and more of this community. Not to mention the necessities, a school for the little ones and a post office. The New Urbanism design contains narrow streets, unique picket fences and homes tightly knit to encourage walking and bike riding creating that true community feel. The homes in Seaside have won many prestigious architectural awards over the years. Times magazine quoted it as the most astounding design achievement of its era. Over the years Seaside has become the heart of Scenic Highway 30-A.
Once your feet hit those cobble stone streets and you see your first sunset, you know you are home.

Sliders Seaside Grill - Amelia Island Restaurant Virtual Tour
Sliders Seaside Grill has been one of our favorite places to eat for years. Check out the virtual tour of one of the best restaurants in Amelia Island if you're looking for a good seafood restaurant near the Fernandina Beach area with a great atmosphere.
3 bar areas, live entertainment, wedding facilities, banquet rooms and a great view of the ocean. There's also a kids play area and the food is always great!
I highly recommend the fried shrimp and the fried shrimp! It's a wonderful place to take your family or a date for a fun time while you're eating some great food.
