Gitta Goes up Mt Iron in Wanaka
My easy afternoon stroll turned into a 6.5 hour walk as I wandered through down and along the shore of Lake Wanaka. My walk took me past Eely Point, Bremner Bay, Beacon Point and over to the Outlet of the Clutha River. Then I turned inland to hike up to the top of Mt Iron for amazing views of the Wanaka region.

Mix the inspired views of an architect, a secluded 50 acres of land with the Clutha River just a short walk away and the fast-growing lakeside town of Wanaka just a 15-minute drive away - and you have Aoturoa.
Aoturoa (pronounced Ow-tu-roa) means World of Light and is nestled on a river terrace close to New Zealand's 2nd largest river, the Clutha, in a valley between Queenstown and Lake Wanaka. Built initially as a luxury lodge accommodating up to 10 guests. It could be re-born as a lodge or used as a family home, with its six bedrooms and six bathrooms.
On two levels, the property is of a classic style but with that feeling of home and beautifully finished. The bathrooms have imported Italian tapware and most have free-standing deep French baths, some with views overlooking the countryside.
Step inside and you will be taken aback by the light, space, natural materials used in the home, and the mountain backdrop - it's a great home for entertaining, with a kitchen designed to cater for multiple guests.
The quality architecture provides a light, thermally-efficient, solid home, built to withstand the Otago environment. A master heating control can isolate the various zones in the house and there are open fires in the living rooms.
The property boasts a grove of hazelnuts, a fruit orchard and olive trees - with scope to further develop the land. It has access to the mighty Clutha River and walking tracks, and opportunities for fishing, kayaking, hiking, hunting and biking.
It's a haven and an oasis for those who yearn for privacy and space - yet not far from the fast-growing township of Wanaka with its beautiful lake and opportunities for water sports and fishing. And only another 20-30 minutes to the ski-fields of Cardrona and Treble Cone. Wanaka boasts iconic cafes and restaurants, boutique shops and weekly markets selling artisan food.
Not to be forgotten are the many opportunities close by to see Central Otago's internationally-renowned vineyards with cellar-door wine tasting.
WANAKA, NEW ZEALAND: Boating in style, cliff jumping and wake-skating
We weren't actually going to stop in Wanaka, it was initially going to be a quick drive through as we headed to Lake Tekapo from Queenstown. Funny how the pull of a crystal clear lake, a stunning Spring day and a ski boat ready to go changed our plans for the day..
