Best drives in Scotland - Bealach na Ba - Applecross - Dangerous Mountainous Road - GoPro 6
The Bealach na Bà is a curvy mountainous road located in the Applecross peninsula, Highland, Scotland. This twisting, single-track mountain road is the third highest road in Scotland rising up to 626 metres (2,054 ft) above the sea level. It's one of the most scenic drives in the world. Speeds faster than 30 mph are rarely permitted.
The route demands 100% concentration. This road has humbled many egos. It’s not for the sissies and shouldn’t be attempted by novice drivers. It's similar to the great mountain passes in the Alps, with very tight hairpin bends which switch back and forth up the hillside, with gradients approaching 20%.
It is recommended that beginner riders and those who don't know how to reverse avoid this road. The road is so narrow that there are several ‘passing places’. It means they are places when to stop when a vehicle comes from the opposite direction. The road is dangerous because: very narrow, sharp bends, steep gradients and lacks places to pass. The ‘UK’s toughest climb’ goes against the grain of many of the other British climbs, in that it is fearsome both in length and gradient.
Bealach Na Ba 100 Climbs #69
The climb of Bealach Na Ba in the Highlands features in Simon Warren's 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs book. It is one of the toughest and wildest in the UK. The scenery is fantastic though. The route I rode started from Loch Carron , went over the climb to Applecross and then looped around by following the West Coast 500 route. Well worth the trip. (Sorry if I have pronounced the climb incorrectly, our host for the week, a Gaelic speaker couldn't stop laughing at my attempt!)
Bealach na Ba Single Track Road Highlands Scotland
Tour Scotland video of a drive down the famous Bealach na Ba single track road on ancestry visit to the Scottish Highlands. This road is a traditional cattle drovers' route from the Western Isles to the markets in the Central Belt. From Isle of Skye, the cattle would have been swum across to Applecross via Raasay as an alternative route to crossing near Kyle. Despite the road's importance to the community it serves, as much so as many of the B-roads in the Highlands, it was never classified, and this is probably due to the steepness and height of the pass. A single track road or one lane road is a road that permits two way travel but is not wide enough in most places to allow vehicles to pass one another, although sometimes two compact cars can pass. This kind of road is common in rural areas across the United Kingdom and elsewhere. The term is widely used in Scotland, particularly the Highlands, to describe such roads.
Applecross Road (Bealach Na Ba) in a Fiesta ST
A short vid of our ascent up the Bealach Na Ba in our Fiesta ST (2013).
Road conditions weren't ideal (Rain, Ice and Snow) and met a few cars also.
In the video it looks very slow, however I wouldn't want to drive it any quicker as most of the corners are blind.
Episode 6 - Applecross - Bealach na ba - Scottish Highlands
This is a story of my trip to Applecross on the west coast of Scotland. Also known as Bealach na ba “The pass of the cattle” its the highest road in Scotland. 626m (2053ft) above sea level. I wanted to capture the beauty of scotland and the views from the top were absolutely amazing!
It was also the summer solstice. Making it the longest day of the year. I doubt i would have made it up in time otherwise! pure luck! Definitely a trip I wont forget in a hurry!
Hope you enjoy the video, thanks so much for watching!

Bealach Na Ba - Towards Applecross
A ride across the Applecross Road, Bealach Na Ba (Pass of the Cattle), heading towards Applecross.
Filmed on Wednesday 5th October 2016 using a GoPro Hero 3 HD Silver, riding my 2013 Yamaha FJR1300, it was a beautiful sunny day (if somewhat blustery!).
The return journey will be in a separate video.
Driving the notorious 2,054ft 'Bealach na Ba' (Pass of the Cattle) - 1080p
I've been lucky enough to have been over this famous old pass numerous times, each time as spectacular as the last, in any weather conditions. Here is the crossing from the Applecross side in it's entirety, sped up to fit into just over 6 minutes.
Bealach na Bà is a historic pass through the mountains of the Applecross peninsula, in Wester Ross in the Scottish Highlands—and the name of a famous twisting, single-track mountain road through the pass and mountains. The song is 'A knife in the ocean' by 'Foals'. I own no rights for this music and it is solely for entertainment.
The road is one of few in the Scottish Highlands that is engineered similarly to roads through the great mountain passes in the Alps, with very tight hairpin bends that switch back and forth up the hillside and gradients that approach 20%. It boasts the greatest ascent of any road climb in the UK, rising from sea level at Applecross to 626 metres (2,054 ft), and is the third highest road in Scotland.
The name is Gaelic for Pass of the Cattle, Scottish Gaelic: Bealach na Bà, as it was historically used as a drovers' road.
The North Coast 500 day 1. Inverness to Applecross
Don't forget to thumbs up and subscribe if you like my videos.
A short video of our first day doing the North Coast 500 road trip. After reaching Inverness from Livingston, we headed north from Inverness to Chanonry point for our first stop and were very lucky to spot dolphins and seals.
From there we headed west stopping at Rogie Falls heading for our overnight stay at Applecross Campsite via the famous Bealach Na Ba (Pass of the Cattle)
We also got to follow a nice TVR Cerbera for a while.
Here is a map I made of our rough itinerary, feel free to use it if you wish:

These are all two way roads, just luck of the day that the traffic was so light. I catch up with Peter in his 2b about half way down.

This is the majority of the famed Bealach na Ba (gaelic for 'Pass of the Cattle') into Applecross in the HIghlands of Scotland. Not the best surface or the widest tarmac, but it is one of the most stunning roads in the country - with more in common with an Apline pass than a Scottish B road!
