Fire crews fought to contain a wildfire in Bear Butte State Park on Saturday afternoon as high winds from an incoming cold front fanned flames up the hillside and into surrounding grasslands near Sturgis, South Dakota. The fire is suspected to be human caused, and was last reported to be over 100 acres in size with 30% containment. The steep terrain of the area made the fire especially difficult to access for fire crews on the scene.
Package includes 3 different timelapse angles of the fire, with the second clip showing the fire growing in intensity.
Bear Butte
I captured this from a Christan program. I don't usually have high regards for religious groups but I think this program and this segment shows some respect for native cultures and what they are still dealing with. And is impartial.

Bear Butte is a geological laccolith feature located near Sturgis, South Dakota, United States, that was established as a State Park in 1961.An important landmark and religious site for the Plains Indians tribes long before Europeans reached South Dakota, Bear Butte is called Mathó Pahá, or Bear Mountain, by the Lakota, or Sioux. To the Cheyenne, it is known as Noahȧ-vose or Náhkȯhe-vose , and is the place where Ma'heo'o imparted to Sweet Medicine, a Cheyenne prophet, the knowledge from which the Cheyenne derive their religious, political, social, and economic customs. The mountain is sacred to many indigenous peoples, who make pilgrimages to leave prayer cloths and tobacco bundles tied to the branches of the trees along the mountain’s flanks.

Devls Tower - Travel VLOG | HEADED WEST | Day 4
After spending the night at Horse Thief Campground in South Dakota, we pack up and head further west into Wyoming and make a stop at Devils Tower for lunch and a hike before continuing on through the Big Horn Mountains and set up camp at Buffalo Bill State Park just west of Cody, WY.
Devils Tower (also Bear Lodge Butte) is a laccolithic butte composed of igneous rock in the Bear Lodge Mountains (part of the Black Hills) near Hulett and Sundance in Crook County, northeastern Wyoming, above the Belle Fourche River. It rises dramatically 1,267 feet (386 m) above the Belle Fourche River, standing 867 feet (265 m) from summit to base. The summit is 5,112 feet (1,559 m) above sea level.
Devils Tower was the first declared United States National Monument, established on September 24, 1906, by President Theodore Roosevelt. The monument's boundary encloses an area of 1,347 acres (545 ha).
In recent years, about 1% of the monument's 400,000 annual visitors climbed Devils Tower, mostly using traditional climbing techniques.

2012 - Black Hills of South Dakota, USA
To my delightful surprise, the Black Hills of South Dakota was a lot of fun and I had a blast during my two-day stay in the area. I visited the second longest underground cave in the world, Crazy Horse Monument, Mount Rushmore, explored Custer State Park where I saw all sorts of wildlife, had a blast driving through the roads that took me through all sorts of rock tunnels and even took a unexpected helicopter ride over Mount Rushmore. This area is very unique as it marks the beginning and the end of the prairies, which allows a large diversity of animal and plant life in this small region. I would fully recommend anyone to visit this area.
Skiing States: North Dakota - Part 1 and 2
The landscape that inspired Theodore Roosevelt is relatively unknown to the rest of Americans. Locals splitboard and cross country ski here when the snow is good. My journey was to seek out backcountry lines on the buttes and Badlands, an area under attack from the oil industry and 100+ years of illegal colonist land seizures. Jeremy Jones of POW talks about oil development here and a local splitboarder shares his stoke for North Dakota powder. Dakota Access Pipeline Protests are explained. Natives Outdoors athlete Conner Ryan and local historian Calvin Grinnell (Running Elk) help us understand the history of the land. Cartoons by Marty Two Bulls and local Mandan-Hidatsa music from Keith Bear.
I stopped at White Butte, the state high point as part of the Skiing States project to ski the 24 snowy state high points in the USA.
The Killdeer Mountains are a beautiful prominent location for skiing and tribal history however are occupied and shut off. Other locations on federal lands have potential for gully and chute skiing and are yet to be explored. Wild buffalo roam in Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Get a good map and check out North Dakota for touring or to find undiscovered lines.
Conserve what is left of the North Dakota Badlands, support the Badlands Conservation Alliance. Check out Natives Outdoors to learn about their mission to highlight native athletes and outdoor initiatives.
Slim Buttes, South Dakota
This was made from the North Divide Road portion of Slim Buttes, which has many unique looking areas to explore. Contrary to the map, this is a dead-end road, but a gorgeous one!
The Black Hills of South Dakota are not hills
The Black Hills (Pahá Sápa in Lakota, Moʼȯhta-voʼhonáaeva in Cheyenne, awaxaawi shiibisha in Hidatsa) are a small, isolated mountain range rising from the Great Plains of North America in western South Dakota and extending into Wyoming, USA. Harney Peak, which rises to 7,244 feet (2,208 m), is the range's highest summit. The Black Hills encompass the Black Hills National Forest and are home to the tallest peaks of continental North America east of the Rockies. The name Black Hills is a translation of the Lakota Pahá Sápa. The hills were so-called because of their dark appearance from a distance, as they were covered in trees.
Native Americans have a long history in the Black Hills. After conquering the Cheyenne in 1776, the Lakota took over the territory of the Black Hills, which became central to their culture. In 1868, the U.S. government signed the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868, exempting the Black Hills from all white settlement forever. However, when European Americans discovered gold there in 1874, as a result of George Armstrong Custer's Black Hills Expedition, erstwhile miners swept into the area in a gold rush. The US government re-assigned the Lakota, against their wishes, to other reservations in western South Dakota. Unlike most of South Dakota, the Black Hills were settled by European Americans primarily from population centers to the west and south of the region, as miners flocked there from earlier gold boom locations in Colorado and Montana.
As the economy of the Black Hills has shifted from natural resources (mining and timber), the hospitality and tourism industry has grown to take its place. Locals tend to divide the Black Hills into two areas: The Southern Hills and The Northern Hills. The Southern Hills is home to Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Harney Peak (the highest point east of the Rockies), Custer State Park (the largest state park in South Dakota, and one of the largest in the US), the Crazy Horse Memorial (the largest sculpture in the world), and the Mammoth Site in Hot Springs, the world's largest mammoth research facility. Attractions in the Northern Hills include historic Deadwood and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, held each August. The first Rally was held on August 14, 1938 and the 65th Rally in 2005 saw more than 550,000 bikers visit the Black Hills. It is a key part of the regional economy. Motorcycle riders are also attracted to the Black Hills simply for the many miles of awe-inspiring scenery. While not in South Dakota, the Devils Tower National Monument located in the Wyoming Black Hills is an important nearby attraction. Devils Tower is the nation's first national monument
