For 42 years, from 1876 until 1918, the village belonged to the Maros-Torda County of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire.
Due to its salty lakes and warm water it became an increasingly popular health resort during the end of the 19th and the 20th century. It gained the status of town in 1952.
The geological events in 1875 gave birth to the Bear Lake, which is unique in Europe, its water being helio-thermal and salty, with well-known therapeutic effects (for chronic gynecological symptoms, severe rheumatic pains, peripheral nervous system and post-accidental motor diseases).
There are four more salty lakes: Nut Lake, Black Lake, Red Lake and Green Lake. In the interwar period, Sovata became one of the most fashionable spas in the country, visited several times even by the Romanian Royal Family.

Sovata este un oraș în județul Mureș, Transilvania, România, format din localitățile componente Căpeți, Ilieși, Săcădat și Sovata. Este situat pe cursul superior al râului Târnava Mică, la confluența cu râul Sovata.
Stațiune cu sezon permanent, Sovata a fost menționată pentru prima data ca loc tămăduitor într-un document din 1597, dar abia în 1850 devine stațiune balneară. Este înconjurată de dealurile Cireșelu (912 m), Capela (720 m), Bechiș (1.079 m), Dealul Mic și Muntele de Sare, fiind acoperită cu păduri de fagi, stejari, carpeni, ulmi, castani, brazi și mesteceni.
Lacul Ursu
Stațiunea are o clima subalpină, cu veri răcoroase (temperatura medie în iulie este de 18,5 °C) și ierni blânde (temperatura medie în ianuarie este de -3,5 °C). Temperatura medie anuală este de 7,6 °C, iar media anuală a precipitațiilor este de 750 mm.

Renumele Sovatei se datorează lacurilor Ursu (46.000 m2), Aluniș (9.000 m2), Verde (5.000m2), Negru, Roșu, Mierlei și Șerpilor, cu ape clorurate (cu concentrație mare - de la 40 la 250 g/litru) și sodice, prezentînd fenomenul de heliotermie (vara, temperatura apei variază în funcție de acumularea căldurii solare în apa sărată, apa caldă fiind protejată de un strat de apă proaspată provenită din râulețe, care nu se amestecă cu apă sarată, ci se menține la suprafată, acționînd ca un izolator termic).
