Kuterevo bear sanctuary. Croatia (2010).
Unique project in the world situated on the border with a National Park Sjeverni (North) Velebit. It all started accidentally when the local person from the village of Kuterevo found abandoned baby bear in the woods. In 2002 the sanctuary was formed to house all future baby bears either left by their mothers, suffering from various injuries whether during hunting season or by illegal poaching etc. Being left to survive on their own in the wilderness wouldn't stand the chance. The sanctuary has three settlements of which the first one is only for the baby bears between 2-6 months while the rest is allocated for the older bears. Every summer volunteers from all over the world come to maintain and help the project. If you would like to become one of them please contact vcz.hr . All visitors are welcome from spring time (Easter) until late autumn to visit and enjoy this very special place which every year is visited by more than 10.000 people.

隨著地區發展，這增加了棕熊媽媽們於照顧小熊時而遇到意外(交通意外)或被故意殺害(偷獵)風險。因而遺下尚未有求生能力的小棕熊無人照顧。 而這個於2002年由志願人士成立的 Kuterevo 棕熊保護區其目標就是為了救助當地的孤兒棕熊。這個位於克羅地亞 Kuterevo 的克羅地亞棕熊保護區距離著名的16湖國家公園約1小時車程，來自世界各地的16湖國家公園，只要他們願意為這保護區的日常工作出一分力，也可來這裡當義工，為小棕熊的安全成長作貢獻的同時也體會社區發展與動物生存環境平衡的關係。

This is a short overview video of my two weeks spent volunteering at the bear refuge in Kuterevo, Croatia. The people I meet there and the work that I did made me truly feel part of something. So Thank You to everyone who was there.

Volunteering at Kuterevo Bear Refuge Days 1+2
During this summer Robynne and I decided to volunteer at a bear refuge in Kuterevo, Croatia. The Bear Refuge was founded in 2002. In this moment eight bears are hosted in the Refugium Ursorum Kuterevo. All of these bears lost their mothers during their first year of life and thus had no chance of survival in the wild.
This is a Video Diary that we kept over our time there. Day 1 was just a day of travelling and then a traditional village festival in the evening with Day 2 being our first full day.
After Kuterevo in Croatia we moved on to Pula and then caught a ferry across to Italy to travel down the country. Keep watching to see us explore the main cities.

Dieses ca. 8 Monate alte Bärenbaby wurde alleine ohne Mutter gefunden. Zuerst sollte es in den Zoo von Zagreb kommen, man hat sich dann aber für Kuterevo entschieden.

Croatian brown bears- KUTEREVO
Das Bärenrefugium von Kuterevo (kroat. Utočište za medvjediće u Kuterevu) befindet sich am Velebit-Gebirgsmassiv in der Ortschaft Kuterevo in Kroatien. Es ist etwa 20 km von Otočac und etwa 35 km von Senj entfernt.Es ist ein Refugium für junge Braunbären, die durch äußere Umstände von ihrer Mutter getrennt wurden und ohne menschliche Fürsorge nicht überleben würden.
Utočište za medvjediće u Kuterevu, na ličkim obroncima Velebita nalazi se utočište za medvjediće koji su nesretnim slučajem ili uslijed krivolova odvojeni od majke u dobi kad su premaleni za samostalan život. Takvi mladunci, othranjeni uz pomoć i skrb ljudi, ne uspijevaju razviti znanja i vještine potrebne za samostalan život. Stoga nikad ne odlaze u svoja prirodna staništa nego ostaju u utočištu koje je zasad jedinstven ovakav projekt u svijetu.(wiki)
Do Kutereva je jednostavno doći, udaljeno je cca 170 km od Zagreba, a 20-ak km od Otočca, pa ukoliko imate prilike posjetiti utočište, idemo :-))... ulaz je besplatan, poželjno je ostaviti dobrovoljni prilog.. napomenuo bih da su naša cijenjena trgovačka poduzeća KONZUM I LIDL ** O D B I L A ** donirati ostatke povrća iz svojih trgovina ovom utočištu.. valjda zato da i ljudi pronađu nešto u kontejnerima :-P...
