Bear Sanctuary Kosovo
In 2010 The Republic of Kosovo made it illegal for bears to be kept privately, meaning that 15 bears which had been kept in terrible conditions as ‘attractions’ in restaurants could be freed. Unable to live in the wild, the bears are sheltered in 16 hectares of woodland, with a natural habitat which they are free to explore.
Run by the international Four Paws NGO, the Bear Sanctuary, Prishtina offers a home for these bears and a place for public education on humane treatment of animals. Visitors have the chance to see the bears at play and you would have to be extremely resilient not to leave with your camera’s memory card full of gorgeous pictures

The Bear Sanctuary Prishtina is a national park in Kosovo in close proximity to the city of Prishtina. For many years, there was no law against keeping brown bears in Kosovo. All privately kept brown bears lived in small cages at restaurants. They were born mostly in the forests of Kosovo or Albania and snatched from their mothers by animal dealers. As restaurant bears they were supposed to attract customers, and thus profit, for their owners. In November 2010, when it became illegal to keep bears privately, there was a need for a national park as a new home for the restaurant bears rescued from captivity.
The Bear Sanctuary Prishtina has currently 13 brown bears in custody (as of July 2013). These ‘restaurant bears’ had been tracked down and registered by the government of Kosovo during the last few years and have been rescued in 2013. Two restaurant bears, named Rambo and Luta, could not be saved, because their proprietors killed the bears only hours before the rescue team arrived.
The sanctuary is built on an area of fifteen hectares. In addition to the existing facilities, a new training center will be built in the park in order to improve the public attention to animal welfare and environmental problems in Kosovo.

BEAR SANCTUARY Prishtina - Kassandra
Kassandra was an illegaly-kept restaurant bear in Kosovo. She suffered a miserable existence next to a restaurant near Prishtina. Her owner closed the restaurant down and simply abandoned her. In March 2013 we rescued her with the help of the Kosovan Ministry Environment and KFOR. She was then transfered to our new BEAR SANCTUARY Prishtina. In the BEAR SANCTUARY Kassandra has everything she needs: lots of space, nutritious food and many opportunities to play.

Surroundings which are close to the nature, a lot of green areas and even pools where they can play in the water. No more tiny cages, no more inappropriate food but finally a perfect (bear) life! Next week they will finally be transferred to Prishtina in collaboration with the Ministria e Mjedisit. We are already excited to see their first steps outside! Stay tuned and don't miss the transfer mission on our social media channels! If you want to provide the bears a good start please donate: #savethesaddestbears

STORYLINE:
Authorities in Kosovo said on Saturday that two brown bears have been rescued from captivity and taken to a bear sanctuary.
The two bears were rescued from a restaurant in Rugova Gorge on Friday, where they had been kept to amuse visitors.
Their rescue brings the total of bears removed from private captivity to eight.
Another five were expected to be rescued on Saturday, according to the Kosovo Environment Ministry.
The bears were moved to a bear sanctuary near the capital Pristina, which was opened last week after authorities said on May 28 that two bear cubs had been slaughtered for their gallbladders and their remains dumped in a rubbish bin.
The owner had sold them to animal traders who killed them. In Asian countries, bear gallbladders fetch high prices because they are believed to cure cancer.
The rescue operation on Friday was handled by international animal rights charity Four Paws, whose team sedated the two bears before moving them to a container to be transported to the bear sanctuary.
The ministry asked Four Paws to act immediately to come here and to make a big rescue action. We brought all our resources together here, said the charity's president, Helmut Dungler, speaking at the scene of the rescue.
Kosovo law does not allow private individuals to keep wild animals, and the confiscation of the animals is meant to show that authorities are serious about enforcing rules that will eventually bring the country closer to the European Union.
Police assisted in Friday's rescue, keeping angry family members of the restaurant owner away.
I bought these bears. This is robbery, plain robbery, said Beg Lajci.
I spent two euros a day for each of the two bears. Food. I cleaned them twice a day. I raised them like children, he added.
