Bearded Skipper PEI...He dropped dead at our wedding!
The Bearded Skipper, with his big smile and raspy voice, is a famous personality around North Rustico and Prince Edward Island. After spending 45 years on and around the sea, he's got salt water running through his veins and enough sea tales to keep people entertained for years. So it was no surprise when he focused his boundless energy and nautical experience to start up the wonderful little Rustico Harbor Fisheries Museum on the wharf over-looking the sea.
Norman Peters, better known as the 'Bearded Skipper', told us he wanted to share his passion for the ocean with others from far and wide. It took many years and a great deal of effort to put together all the exhibits that people enjoy every day in the museum but it was worth it as he takes great pride in seeing the smiles and reading the happy comments written in the guest book. Whether they are Japanese, German, American or from just down the road in Prince Edward Island, people always have a wonderful time when they visit the museum.
A fun, educational and interactive museum, it's full of fishing memorabilia, stories, pictures, tools and history. The museum even has two 'touch tanks' where both kids and adults can pick up and learn about various kinds of sea life like crabs, starfish, seaweed, and even a rare blue lobster called 'Kate'. This very unique 1 in 3 million catch is a site to behold!
It's a great place to visit for a few hours to learn about the local history of the sea. If you're lucky the Bearded Skipper himself might be there entertaining guests. Be sure to say hello to him and sign the guest book; it will make his day! And when you're done stroll around the wharf outside, walk along the beach next door or indulge in a feed of fish and chips at the Blue Mussel Cafe beside the museum. It's a gorgeous location not to mention a real working fishing wharf. So keep your eye out for the fishermen returning from a day out checking their traps. You will realize that everything you just saw in the museum is a real way of life.
It all combines for a glimpse of Prince Edward Island past and present!
