Into the Karoo
In December last year, my dad and I embarked on an epic road trip through the Karoo. We covered colossal mountain passes and discovered some of South Africa's most remarkable hidden gems.
As one of the world's 24 biodiversity hotspots and the richest archaeological site on the planet, there is undoubtedly something special - something inexplicable yet truly spectacular - about this place.
The visible timeline of the earth's formation can be seen in the upward facing layers of sedimentary rock which form mountains so massive, you feel like a tiny ant in comparison.
Visiting the Karoo makes you realize how truly old, vast and magnificent our earth is. It is undeniably part of our heritage as South Africans and it deserves our utmost respect and protection.
It's not every day you get to look four billion years of natural evolution in the face. This trip taught me so much about myself, about humility, about the concept of time and about this great blue planet we are privileged to live on. I came away feeling utterly humbled and moved by the experience.
All I have left to say is that if you haven't yet been there, GO.

KLAWERVLEI STUD CHAMPIONS 2017
Klawervlei Stud is a thoroughbred breeding enterprise conducted from the farm Wagenboomheuel on the banks of the Breede river east of Bonnievale, a village in the BAR valley of the Western Cape. This area has traditionally been associated with the breeding of high quality and sound race horses. Klawervlei is conducted through a corporate entity owned by John Koster and a syndicate of businessmen. The Stud farm is managed by John, a seasoned equine stock-man hailing from a family that has been engaged in thoroughbred breeding for generations.
History
Mr Ralph Koster’s Klavervlei Stud was founded twenty-three years ago and today many of the best known racing in South Africa come from it. Klavervlei has produced a steady stream of classic and top-class handicap horses during recent years. From Klavervlei came such as South Africa’s champion of his day, Jerez, Majorca greatest filly of her time and second in her generation only to Colorado King, Casanova winner of the Guineas and Derby in Natal, Polar Bear winner of the Metropolitan Handicap, Vaso winner of the first Cape Merchants Cup and the sprinting classic the Diadem Plate, the good filly Rosinante, and Savonarola, winner of the Cape Mellow-wood Guineas and the Natal Guineas and second in his generation only to Sea Cottage in this year of grace.
Klavervlei is sited high in the Nieuevelt Mountains 25 miles to the north of Beaufort West and standing above 5,000 feet. The farms which comprise the stud extend to over 40,000 morgen and the stud lies in a valley irrigated from the Zack River.

Highlights of the Heart of Cape Town Museum 50th commemoration
On 3 December 2017 it was 50 years since South Africa stunned the world by performing the world's first human-to-human heart transplant. The original operating theatres where the actual history was made, fitted with the original equipment used in this epoch making moment have been restored and outfitted in a live museum, which is really something special to see. Added to this, a full two hour guided tour makes this an unforgettable experience well worth doing. This video gives some of the highlights of such a tour, presented by excellent tour-guide, Tracy Adamo.

Voted Best Place to Live Beaufort North Carolina Carteret County NC
Town History
Established in 1709, Beaufort, N.C., is a quaint coastal town located on Beaufort Inlet, a channel leading south to the Atlantic Ocean. The third oldest town in the state and seat of Carteret County, Beaufort has a residential population of about 4,000 with a high influx of visitor traffic during the warmer months.
Beaufort was first known as Fishtown because the fishing industry was and has been an important part of the county’s history. Beaufort was later named for Henry Somerset, Duke of Beaufort.
Originally a fishing village and port of safety dating from the late 1600s, Beaufort has been visited by patriots, privateers, merchants, and skilled craftsmen who built Bahamian and West Indian-style homes and public buildings. Approximately 150 of the restored historic homes bear plaques noting names of the Town’s earliest known owners and dates of original construction.
The early economy of Beaufort was on the use of natural resources in the area. Hence, fishing, whaling, the production of lumber and naval stores, shipbuilding, and farming were the chief economic activities. Though Beaufort had the safest and most navigable harbor of any of the ports of North Carolina, extensive commercial activities failed to develop, owing to the fact that the town was almost completely isolated from the interior. Now, Beaufort’s economy depends heavily on tourism.
The Plan of Beaufort Towne, laid out in 1713, survives in a 12-block area, which today is on the National Register of Historic Places.

A little video montage I made of the adventures of the 5th years on sports day, when we dressed up as grapes. Spirit cup, here we come!!!
I think it kind of goes without saying that I don't own the rights to the song We Are Young, but nevertheless I feel the need to make that clear.
Enjoy :)

Heart of Cape Town Museum
On Sunday it will be exactly 50 years since the first human to human heart transplant was conducted by a team lead by cardiac pioneer, Professor Christiaan Neethling Barnard. It made headlines the world over and changed the landscape of cardiac surgery.
In the early hours of the 3rd of December 1967, the lives of Barnard, Denise Darvall and Louis Washkansky became intertwined forever.

Greater Oudtshoorn Tourism
The towns of Oudtshoorn and De Rust are in the Klein Karoo between the Swartberg and Outeniqua mountains. Oudtshoorn is the ostrich capital of the world. The world's biggest bird is just one of the many attractions in this area of exceptional contrasts and natural beauty.
The region is home to the spectacular Cango Caves, Africa's largest show cave system; an ecological hotspot where three distinct plant biomes (succulent karoo, cape thicket and fynbos) converge; and the Swartberg mountain range, which is part of the Cape Floral World Heritage Site.
